Screamscape now reports today that they were off be one year. That the proposed reopening of ST would be 2009. This at least sounds like a more realistic time frame.

I wonder how this will affect Star Wars Weekends in 2008...unless closings will be partail like what is going on with SSE.

I would bet that it would not effect SWW. There are three times during the year where ST absolutely has to be open.

1. SWW
2. Christmas week
3. Easter week

So you can probably guess when it will go down (between SWW & Christmas). It may also be done in phases and reopened depending on the amount of work that needs to be done.

If they are changing the sims, they can't do it in phases.

Plus, once TSM is open, it is much easier for Disney to keep ST down for a long stretch of time, even through the big weekends.

if they are considering a StormRider system upgrade (and I'm pretty sure if Lucas were to agree to do this, he would want a new ride system), late '08 makes more sense.

Yes, they are both enclosed cabin style simulators. StormRider is 3x larger capacity-wise, has a larger screen, and has portholes along the sides of the cabin which are displays that show the outside environments going by. I've heard that the movement of the ride is much more impressive than Star Tours. It also has environmental effects that interact with the riders.

Aw, I hope they ad the same stuff to Star Tours. I can imagine that it would also be cool if they could have some smoke effects in the cabins and maybe seat vibrators like AE used to have to add intensity like when the ships hit astroids.

If Disney continues to upgrade and expand MGM do they have enough space because it seems to me to be land locked because of the highway, parkinglot, and to the north another street with the epcot resort area? And then the main entrance is coming in from the south.
I may be way off base with this so I need some help. Isn't there a fair piece of land across the road from the Studios that could be used for expansion. Walk-ways are built across roads all over the country, so it is possible to expand I think.
While three seperate ride destinations is a great idea, and I think it would make for a better attraction, I just don't think Disney will do it when they can get by with one. Just my opinion. Still a very good idea.

They won't build walkways across the 'real world' at WDW. If anything they'd move the highway.

There are plenty of usable expansion spots before they would even think about that, though. I believe that one of the larger plots involves removing the Indy stunt show and the parking lot behind it and turning those into attraction space and then building a new parking lot.

Or leave the stunt show alone and work around it...

I don't think thats possible because of the huge size of the sets. They take up a lot of the backstage space in that area as is, and if you were going to use the parking lot but keep Indy, you'd have to have a new huge backstage area to truck those sets back and forth.

If Star Tours really is getting a massive facelift, we're probably going to see a new Indy attraction. Whether that means the old one stays or goes remains to be seen.

Somebody is going to have to ask Anthony Daniels about it during the last weekend of Star Wars Weekends at the Disney-MGM Studios (either at the Stars of the Saga Talk Show of go up to him during one of the autograph signings.)

Uh.. didnt you get a chance to get to SW Weekends? Did you get to ask him?

Here's what they had to say today:

2008/2009 - Star Tours 2 - Rumor - (6/6/07) A new big piece of the Star Tours 2 puzzle came in today and claims that Anthony Daniels was about a year off… as the current plans to remodel Star Tours wont be complete until the end of 2008. Our source claims that the Star Tours 2 plans are likely connected to the Disney-Pixar name rebranding of the park which is also likely to happen in 2008. As for the ride itself, our sources tell us that WDI is still finalizing all the details right now but that it seems a good bet that Captian Rex will be retired from action this time around. It also seems a sure bet that the new version of Star Tours will go into Disneyland and Walt Disney World, though the window of time left to do the work may stretch the reopening into 2009.

I wonder if the Captain Rex thing means they will redesign him (much like the robot from Alien Encounter was changed into 90210 in Stitch's Great Escape) or they will completely take him out and leave his space empty, or will they replace him with something completely different.

I actually hope they have some type of interaction narrator like Capt. Rex. I wish we didn't have to wait so long for this new Star Tours if these new time frames are indeed the correct ones.

No, unforunately fig, he did not appear at my weekend. It was Jay Laga'aia, Kenny Baker, and Bonnie Piesse (who replaced Warwick Davis).

Anthony Daniels will appear the fourth, and last weekend, June 22-24, with Warkwick Davis and Jay Laga'aia.

So if anyone is going that weekend, they should ask him.

Speaking of Star Wars Weekend, I always thought it would be cool if they would make a special simulator film to be played during the weekends, much like the Haunted Mansion and It's a Small World are changed for the Christmas Holiday. :)

2008/2009 - Star Tours 2 - Rumor - (6/7/07) The latest buzz over Star Tours 2 is that Disney is now ready to push more cash and time into the project which will likely be marketed heavily for the 2009 season as their main weapon to combat the new Harry Potter area going into Islands of Adventure.

Disney really only considers two seasons... Winter and Summer. This project would be ready for the Summer so that any neccescary tweaks required could be made before the busier Winter season...

hmm...I think 2009 is a bit out there for a Star Tours upgrade though. If disney closes it fall 2007...I think they can have a new version open by summer of 2008 to coincide with the "grand opening" of Disney-Pixar Studios. They should use 2009 to unviel another new attraction for the studio like Indy, Muppets, Monsters Inc., or Cars.

that depends on how extensive the changes are...and I don't see George Lucas settling.
