Pop Century, Pachyderms and a Proposal - May 2011 Trip Report

Hello fellow Disney lovers!
After years of lurking and randomly posting here and there on these boards...I figured it was time to write a trip report. This is my second attempt at writing a TR - my first came to a stop when my computer crashed and I lost a bunch of pictures. But I vow to finish this one! (Hell, I'm only starting it 4 months late - I've had enough prep time!) I was really on the fence about writing one but it seemed Holly (Hollybelle) nudged (more like pushed) me over the edge. So here I am. And who am I?

I'm Jess.

P1020489-1-1.jpg

23 year old self proclaimed Disney expert. This is my 7th trip…about 6th since I’ve been obsessed. My first trip in 1997 – First ride was Honey I Shrunk the Audience. Absolutely terrified me. I was scarred for the rest of the trip, scared to ride almost every ride. I was scared to ride Peter Pan’s Flight…no joke. My parents are still shocked that I now adore the place. The only ride I can remember riding and not being scared of was Spaceship Earth. Therefore I felt incredibly brave for riding the slow moving journey through time and rode it many times and this ride is still my favorite ride in all of Disney. So Spaceship Earth not only signifies my bravery but now it just SCREAMS “you’re at Disney World” to me. The sight of the mural paired with that SSE smell…gives me that feeling of “yep, you’re in Disney…feel free to tear up a bit.” And I usually do.

Anyway…traveling with me on this trip is my boyfriend(?) of 3 ½ years Bill.

billishot.jpg

25 year old medical student, avid Haunted Mansion fan and tolerater of my Disney obsession. This is Bill’s 5th trip to the World…1st being with his high school class, the subsequent 3 being with yours truly. His 1st trip – he was not impressed (clearly he hadn’t met the right girl yet). Even after his 2nd trip he was not convinced. But the 3rd trip did the trick. He is still not obsessed to the point of posting on a Disney forum but he is hooked. Just thinking about how much he brags about how clean Disney is and how good the food is and how amazing everything is just brings a tear to my eye. He bragged about it so much to his family that joining us on this trip are….

Bill’s sister Samantha and her boyfriend Anthony.

P1020412-1.jpg

This will be both of their 2nd trips. Both of their trips were (separately) when they were in high school or middle school. Both were coming to Disney with one thing on their minds – FOOD. We had the dining plan on our last trip (free dining pin) and we got the pin again and Bill was bragging about the fantastic food we have encountered on our previous trips. Both were excited to stuff themselves full. (spoiler alert - mission accomplished)

This trip took place from May 17th – 24th. We were on the basic dining plan. And we were staying at the gorgeous, extravagant, larger than life, everyone’s favorite resort…you know it, you love it…starts with a P….O….takes you to a place you’ve never been. Say ‘Aloha’ to….

P1020821.jpg

POP CENTURY!!! Where else? :lookaroun We are avid Pop fans because we spend little time at the resort and can’t really justify shelling out the bucks for a place to sleep and shower.

So let’s get on with the show, shall we?

Monday May 16th“Do I really have to go to work today? Don’t they know I need to prepare for Disney tomorrow?”

Early morning work meetings are like getting jammed at the end of PoTC by the treasure room – always longer than expected. After listening to my boss and clients talk about something that was not Disney and therefore not interesting…I headed home to finish packing. Bill had just finished his first round of medical school boards (tests) so he was relaxing at home…leisurely packing. We finished up and headed to his parents house who live about 30 minutes away from the airport. We had a nice dinner with his parents and other siblings celebrating Bill being done with his boards. Then after a trip to the bar to REALLY celebrate…I put myself to bed for we had to get up early for our 7:50 flight.

Tuesday May 17th“Yes I do plan to ride SSE again and again…”
The alarm at 4 came quite quickly and we were showered and ready to hit the airport. We arrived without problem and got in line for TSA. And walking to the back of the line we spotted this man in line…

mario-lemieux-picture-1.jpg

(we didn't take a pic of him - too star struck - so this is from the internet)

Yes that is hockey legend Mario Lemieux. Former player and current owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Yeah…he’s kind of a big deal. So after our first (and only…unless you count Mickey Mouse…which, who am I kidding? You do.) celebrity sighting we headed through TSA. Samantha and Anthony were selected for body scans – Bill and I were not. True of our flight back to Pittsburgh as well. BUT who cares about heading back to Pittsburgh…we’re on our way to (as John would say) Walt F’in Disney World! We stopped for a delicious McDonalds breakfast before boarding our flight.

Flight was a bit bumpy – Samantha was not impressed, actually feeling rather sick from the bumps. When we landed the pilot informed us it was 70 degrees and sunny in Orlando, as well as 55 degrees and rainy in Pittsburgh. That’s what I love to hear! We got off the plane and bolted for Magical Express. This is when Anthony commented that all he saw through MCO was the back of my head as I was pretty much sprinting through the airport.

We’ve got places to go…Magical Expresses to catch. We walked through DME without problems and got the next bus that came. On the bus and off The Most Magical Place on Earth!!!!

We got to POP a little after 11 and our rooms were not ready. So after a quick change and checking our carry ons with the baggage people...we were heading out to the parks.

I took this picture for the sole purpose of being the background on my iPhone.

Okay, this makes me feel better, because I totally did this several times on my trip last month!

I also kept making my sister take my pic in front of cool things so I could have some new Facebook profile pics

Samantha had one ride on her mind that we didn’t hit the day before…Dumbo. She called it “Pachyderms” in sort of a Russian accent (I personally said it the way it’s said in the Disneyland version of Fantasmic!...either way we were super cool) so to the pachyderms it was!

P1020606.jpg

P1020605.jpg

P1020607.jpg

Samantha was super excited. I was more excited to get some pics of Fantasyland Expansion and some more Castle pics.

P1020610.jpg

P1020611.jpg

Crazy to see how fast Fantasyland has progressed from May to now. I'm super excited to see how it turns out!

P1020614.jpg

P1020617.jpg

Samantha did request I take one of “pachyderm ” so I obliged.

P1020620.jpg

We then decided to ride some rides that Bill is not a huge fan of since he was not there. First up (surprise, surprise) It’s a Small World. I personally LOVE this ride - it's a nostalgia thing...my maternal grandparents (both now deceased) took my mom to the Worlds Fair and she rode Its a Small World when she was young. Makes my mom think of her mom - which makes her cry. Which now makes me, my sister, and my cousins tear up as well when we ride. Bill on the other hand - sees it as an annoying song boat ride.

Next was Splash Mountain! I just don't get sick of this ride!

Splash+Mountain+Sign.jpg

P1020631-1.jpg

P1020630.jpg

P1020632.jpg

And after that pic…my camera crapped out. We have like 4 or 5 pictures from later on that were taken on cell phones...but thats about it. So in terms of not making this chapter of the TR ultra boring…I will incorporate some pics from earlier trips, some taken earlier in the trip that didn't fit in that part of the TR and some from the internet. Hope you don’t mind. Anyway…we had ridden Splash twice and then went to ride Jungle Cruise. Our skipper was "Alex" and he was pretty great. We were towards the front and Samantha loved every corny joke. She busted out laughing at the "plastic python" joke.

2939173985_ae959feff4.jpg

(I absolutely despise big snakes. Looking at this pic freaks me out a little. I walk straight through the reptile room at AK. No thanks.)

Then went to Main St Bakery for some giant cinnamon rolls!

4635887965_bc48058ec6.jpg

I felt bad eating one without Bill - so I filled the void with...chocolate milk to wash down the cinnamon roll.

It was getting crazy hot and Bill was getting ready to leave POP to meet us. We told him to meet us at EPCOT because we were hungry and didn’t want any counter service in MK and would rather eat at World Showcase. So we took the monorail to EPCOT.

P1020590.jpg

Don't worry MK...we'll be back!

Oh Epcot, I love you.

disney152.jpg

(this pic was actually taken last year when Bill and I did the Segway Around the World Showcase - I love an empty EPCOT)

Before we ate, we decided to do some Kim Possible missions! It was our first time doing the missions and we loved it We did Mexico and then Norway. After Norway we hit up the bakery for some school bread! (crossed it off my desserts to try list!)

P1020379.jpg

I really enjoyed the school bread but it wasn’t the most phenomenal dessert ever as some posters had led me to believe…but still delicious none the less. Bill and Anthony were very hungry so they went to Morocco in search of gyros while Samantha and I went to China in search of orange chicken. We decided to meet in Japan to eat up by the Yakitori House outdoor seating as it’s pretty peaceful up there.

disney125.jpg

The food was good but nothing great. Bill really enjoyed his gyro though. The heat was getting to all of us so it was back to the resort to nap and swim.

pop60s.jpg

Then showers and time for dinner at my most anticipated of the whole trip – Ohana!

Bill and I fell in love with the Polynesian on our last trip. We ate at Kona Cafe and just loved the whole place. Last year we saw Ohana and I knew about the hype and we decided then and there that we'd be returning to the Poly for Ohana...and Kona again too!

disney015.jpg

disney023.jpg

disney022.jpg

If you regularly check these boards you’ve seen pics of Ohana’s foods (if not, check a few HollyBelle TRs…or WDWFigment aka Tom has a website with his review and pictures here: http://www.disneytouristblog.com/polynesian-resort-ohana-dinner-dining-review/)

The food was really REALLY good. Bill is a sauce man and loves to drench his food in sauce so this was his favorite meal of the trip. Everyone was in agreement that it was a great meal. We all had Lapu Lapu’s to wash down the food.

One of the cell phone pictures we have was Samantha digging into the dessert at Ohana.

ohanabuzz.jpg

She LOVED this meal. It was by far her favorite meal. When she ate her first bite of steak - she slammed the end of her fork on the table and said "WOW THAT IS AMAZING" we all just laughed out loud. But I was glad that everyone enjoyed the meal (myself included!) We were all so overly stuffed.

I’m really missing the cute pics of us sipping on our drinks right now! They are pretty strong and Samantha and I were both feeling a little tipsy! We didn’t take too many pics here (thank God) because we were coming back the next night for Kona Café (when my camera magically started saving pics again). We jumped the monorail and made it to MK in time for Wishes. For me – nothing like standing ON Main Street to watch Wishes. Yes – I teared up.

disney_wishes_nighttime_spectacular.png

We fought the crowds and took a few rides on Haunted Mansion.
(clearly this was a pic from a previous trip as we rode at night)
disney096.jpg

Love the new effects at the end, Bill was really blown away. This is his favorite ride and he just loves the detail and always noticing something new each ride.

Next we staked out a sweet spot in front of the castle to catch MSEP pics.

226223_10100156147086923_14208951_47953898_8278087_n.jpg

(cell phone)

The parade was good, I know the score from a Disney CD I had as a kid but it’s not as good as SpectroMagic in my eyes. So in lieu of no MSEP pics - I offer you my best SpectroMagic picture

n72405113_31704636_4596625.jpg

AWWWWWEEEESOME. URSULA IS THE BEST! This is my dream job.

I hope they bring Spectro back. There was also a couple clearly boozing from apple juice bottles that danced to the music and would scream “I SEE IT” when a float came close. Obnoxious. After MSEP, we wandered over to Adventureland and rode PoTC and Magic Carpets of Aladdin (Samantha actually wanted to ride pachyderms again but the line was too long so the Magic Carpets were the next best thing. The only time I've ever appreciated have extremely similar rides)

pirates-of-the-caribbean-2.JPG

3419423659_bd89707033.jpg

(totally stole this from the internet - it's pretty badass)

Then the park was closing so we fought the crowds, waiting in a very long line for the bus and went back to Pop to do some sleeping. The next day was our last full day...wait ? I just got here!

Next Up: “Is this part of the ride?” Nurse Samantha springs into action!

Question: Where did ya'll get the matching WDW shirts? Totally want to get these with my Mom and sister in 2 months!!! :)

I never get sick of Splash either and Spectro doesn't hold a candle to MSEP, IMO! Glad you guys liked 'Ohana. We're trying it for the first time next trip. We had dinner (and Lapu Lapus!!) at Kona Cafe last trip and we really enjoyed it... but I REALLY wanna go for breakfast and try the Tonga Toast! :)

Glad to see you two rockin' the "Just Engaged" buttons. I heart those buttons.

I've gotta say, I'm incredibly happy to hear that Ohana was a big hit with the whole crowd, especially after I kept recommending it. I'm so sad you lost the lapu lapu pictures. I guess this just means you'll have to go back.

Also, the celebratory dessert at Via Napoli... we got one of those as well. It was, like, a dry cookie with some whip cream. Not that I want to complain about something free, but the majority of the Disney restaurants give you something so much better when you're celebrating. Like one of the desserts on their menu, or glasses of champagne, or even a cupcake. But I digress!

Thank you!!! Yes waiting until the 11th hour only worked in the fact that he did surprise me. But the fact that it was so late and I was not at my Disney best in terms of apperance - the only flaw in his plan. haha! He said he was nervous and wanted to wait until there was no one around. So he gets a pass for that. Yes I love the ring - he picked it out on his own. Major points. I'm not a fan of girls going to the jewlery to pick out their own ring - no fun!

I was very pleased w/his location (as you know I was nervous about this one) I'm glad it was somewhere special and unique (cough cough castle cough). He later told me he had always planned on EPCOT, and even thought of doing it at the top of SSE when they're talking about the future and tying that in. But he knew I'd want a picture and he said I'd probably tell him to be quiet while listening to Judi's spiel. Haha! he may or may not have been right about both!

Siighhh. You couldn't be more right about this one. Brett also made the decision all on his own... also a princess cut solitaire. Smart men we have!

As for the castle, yeah, I've got to agree with you there. It's not that there's anything wrong with that location, especially if it holds some special meaning for the couple, but SSE is way cooler! :animwink: And, uh, I cannot believe Bill was walking around (and riding rides!) with the ring just hanging out in his pocket. That's gutsy.

Tell me this picture is in a frame?! It's sooooo good. :sohappy:

Yes Spaceship Earth makes a fantastic iPhone background for icons. I love being able to take pictures and post them straight to Facebook while I'm on my trip. Then I get so jealous when other people do it on their trips! haha!

Wonderful Castle pictures!

- and man those pizzas look awesome. :slurp:

Both things are just amazing! The castle, like SSE - is something I can take pictures of for days. As well as food! The pizzas were really great. I'm excited to try a new pie on my next trip.

Bill and I got ours (and Samanthas) on our trip in 2010 at the World of Disney. They were all the rage that year. They were everywhere in every gift shop in every color. This year we found them in a good number of gift shops (we bought his at POP I believe) but not in nearly as many colors. But yeah check out the gift shop at your resort or World of Disney.

Yes the Poly gets an A+ with table service restaurants. I really want to do Kona for breakfast. I don't like bananas but I still want Tonga Toast. Is that weird? haha! I have also seen that Kona sometimes has speciality pancakes during certain seasons - I'd love to catch the 'pumpkin' ones next fall!

Ahh man! I hate that your camera broke! I would be so sad!! I'm so glad it didn't break before the big engagement though!! :sohappy:

Yes I was quite disappointed. 2 great shots of us going down the big drop and one of a hidden mickey in the rock work. Heart broken! But you're right at least it didn't happen before the engagement. And the camera magically started saving the next morning so at least we only lost 1 day.

Congratulations on your engagement!! Beautiful ring! OMG those food pic. It's not even 10:00 am and I'm starving now. LOL

Thank you!! Bill did an excellent job - I was pleased! Yes food pics can be very dangerous! I bet a few keyboards have been ruined by drool because of this site! haha!

Glad to see you two rockin' the "Just Engaged" buttons. I heart those buttons.

Ohana was an excellent experience so thank you! And everyone else in our party thanks you too because they loved it! The Lapu Lapus were a bit strong but after a few sips they went down quite smoothly...haha! Tipsy in Disney is FUN. I think a drinking around the monorail resorts is on our 'must do' list for next trip.

Yes the Castle is a gorgeous structure but I personally didn't have any romantic tie to the Castle and I didn't want to be engaged where countless people have been proposed to...so I was more than ecstatic when he did it at SSE. And yes he said he clenched onto the ring during every ride. Bold move, sir.

I'm actually terrible at putting pictures in frames. I have like 3 frames out in my house w/the picture that came in it. :lookaroun The frames are so cute but I never get around to printing all the pictures. But now that I'm reminded - I'll make an effort! haha!

May 23 - “Is this part of the show?”

Last full day at Disney. We were up at 7:15am. Grabbed something quick at Pop for breakfast and jumped the bus to DHS. Bill ran ahead to get us TSMM FP while the rest of us took a few pics.

P1020748.jpg

Then we headed to Muppet Vision 3D! I love this show. I think it’s so funny. And Bill enjoys it a lot too and laughs out loud – so this makes me like it more.

P1020749.jpg

P1020750.jpg

P1020751.jpg

P1020752.jpg

P1020753.jpg

Who doesn't have a picture like this at at least one of the 3D shows?
P1020756.jpg

We rode Great Movie Ride and then cashed in our TSMM FPs. Bill was victorious yet again. We came across the '2 party up the right stairs' and asked if our party of 4 could be split up. We got some attitude from the CM telling us we'd be split up...OK it doesn't really matter to ride in the same vehicle. Then she says "you guys will be like 20 minutes apart" Um ok hardly ma'am...we'll take our chances. So we went up and got right on being one car ahead of Samantha and Anthony. So the Disney tip is - all even number parties...say you're a party of 2 for shorter wait times.

Next, we were all craving something sweet so we went to Starring Rolls Café.

P1020757.jpg

P1020758.jpg

During our last visit - we got one of these chocolate brownies (the one in the middle w/the white chips) It was good - but too rich. It was more half pure chocolate/half brownie.
P1020760.jpg

P1020761.jpg

While everything looked delicious. Bill and I decided to split the Red Velvet Cream cheese cupcake (this was #1 must try list. Now it's on the 'must do' list)

P1020762.jpg

P1020765-1.jpg

It was perfect. A lot of icing but not so much that you can't taste the cake. Absolutely want to eat this every trip from now on. Bill was also a big fan. I loved this cupcake. Really glad we split it though as they are giant. But it’s now my favorite cupcake – ever.

Samantha went for the Butterfinger cupcake.

P1020763.jpg

P1020767-1.jpg

Anthony went for the banana split.

P1020764.jpg

Everyone raved about their desserts. Samantha thoughts hers had too much icing (she considers herself somewhat of a cupcake expert) but thought it was still good.

Always a good show. Nothing jaw dropping but enjoyable non the less.

After this it was to see my favorite show at DHS – Voyage of the little mermaid! I love the giant Ursula. She’s my favorite!

Waiting in the queue
P1020778.jpg

P1020779.jpg

I love this.

While waiting in the queue…all of a sudden we heard a few gasps and people began to circle around. Samantha asked “Is this part of the show” Um no, no it’s not. We heard whispers of someone fainting…Samantha asked if she should go check it out (she's an RN) and I said yes. (Me saying yes = helping.) It ended up an older Spanish man (60s) was diabetic and hadn’t eaten since lunch the day before. Oh and it was 95 degrees out. So yea he fainted (shocking...) Samantha was asking people for some juice meaning apple or orange something with sugar. She was offered twizzlers and carrot juice. No help there. But eventually someone had a juice box. She was trying to communicate via the son because he was the only one who spoke English. Eventually the crowds went in and we were standing in the empty queue with this family. The paramedics came and he was OK. The CM was so grateful to Samantha for helping out that she gave us VIP seats for the next show and TSMM fastpasses. VIP seating meant we got to go in first. Being a Disney vet I knew to wait it out as to not have to "move all the way to the end of the row." So I enjoyed some giant Ursula from excellent middle of the row seating.

We then used our TSMM fastpasses and headed over to Star Tours.

P1020782.jpg

P1020783.jpg

P1020784.jpg

P1020785.jpg

The new ride still makes me dizzy…but not nearly as much as before. You actually move with the screens, not as jerky as before. I enjoyed it. I was excited we got Darth Vader at the beginning because I love the villains. After Star Tours we had done everything we intended to do at DHS.

So back to POP to swim and lay out and grab lunch. I wasn’t too hungry but Bill got shrimp fried rice and tye dye cheesecake.

P1020787-1.jpg

P1020786.jpg

Samantha got some lo mein and Anthony got some nachos.

P1020788.jpg

P1020789.jpg

P1020790-1.jpg

Everyone was full from their meals but not really amazed by the food. It was more like they were hungry so they ate - not because it was delicious. But being full was the goal and goal accomplished.

Samantha and I went to the pool while the boys went back to nap. We returned and showered for it was time to go back to the Poly for our dinner at Kona Cafe!

We headed over to MK and jumped on the monorail to the Poly. Time for Kona Café. Kona was our favorite meal last trip and we were looking for a repeat. Well our waitress was our first let down…super slow on service. Kind of rude. Anyway – the 3 of them got the teriyaki steak

P1020794-1.jpg

I got the steak last trip and loved it. But I wasn't feeling so great at this point and didn't think my stomach could take something so heavy.

I got the shrimp and scallops.

P1020795.jpg

The meals were good – not great. The best thing here is the bread. Best bread I’ve ever had. I don't know if it was just that I was so full from the week of food that one more meal was not in the cards. I picked at my dish and had a few helpings of bread. For dessert I got the Kilauea Torte

P1020797.jpg

Samantha had the Kona Cone.

P1020796.jpg

Anthony had the Banana chocolate crème brulee

P1020799-1.jpg

Bill had the white chocolate cheesecake

P1020798-1.jpg

Everyone enjoyed their desserts. The 3 of them loved the meal…I thought mine was so-so. And with the bad service, I think we’ll try someone new next time instead. But can I just stop by to order that bread? Can I order it to eat at Ohana instead of the celebration bread? I love this idea. Then time to take a few pics around the Poly.

P1020801.jpg

P1020802.jpg

P1020803.jpg

The Poly is absolutely gorgeous. It's #1 on our must stay at list when Bill graduates medical school. I could have stayed around all night but we wanted to get a couple more rides in at MK before admitting defeat and heading back to the resort for our last sleep in Disney.

Monorail to MK. We all rode TTA. Samantha wanted to ride teacups so her and Anth went there while Bill and I rode Haunted Mansion and Splash Mountain (during Wishes!) Got a text from Samantha saying she felt queasy and was going back to the room. Bill and I were going to head back but decided to ride PoTC once before we left as it was our last ride on our last trip. So now the tradition was born of SSE first ride of the trip and PoTC last ride of the trip. We got back to the room to find Anthony had bought a bottle of Jack Daniels in the food court and filled the empty popcorn bucket with jack and coke. This made for a fuzzy last night! :lookaroun
