Pop Century, Pachyderms and a Proposal - May 2011 Trip Report

Hello fellow Disney lovers!
After years of lurking and randomly posting here and there on these boards...I figured it was time to write a trip report. This is my second attempt at writing a TR - my first came to a stop when my computer crashed and I lost a bunch of pictures. But I vow to finish this one! (Hell, I'm only starting it 4 months late - I've had enough prep time!) I was really on the fence about writing one but it seemed Holly (Hollybelle) nudged (more like pushed) me over the edge. So here I am. And who am I?

I'm Jess.

P1020489-1-1.jpg

23 year old self proclaimed Disney expert. This is my 7th trip…about 6th since I’ve been obsessed. My first trip in 1997 – First ride was Honey I Shrunk the Audience. Absolutely terrified me. I was scarred for the rest of the trip, scared to ride almost every ride. I was scared to ride Peter Pan’s Flight…no joke. My parents are still shocked that I now adore the place. The only ride I can remember riding and not being scared of was Spaceship Earth. Therefore I felt incredibly brave for riding the slow moving journey through time and rode it many times and this ride is still my favorite ride in all of Disney. So Spaceship Earth not only signifies my bravery but now it just SCREAMS “you’re at Disney World” to me. The sight of the mural paired with that SSE smell…gives me that feeling of “yep, you’re in Disney…feel free to tear up a bit.” And I usually do.

Anyway…traveling with me on this trip is my boyfriend(?) of 3 ½ years Bill.

billishot.jpg

25 year old medical student, avid Haunted Mansion fan and tolerater of my Disney obsession. This is Bill’s 5th trip to the World…1st being with his high school class, the subsequent 3 being with yours truly. His 1st trip – he was not impressed (clearly he hadn’t met the right girl yet). Even after his 2nd trip he was not convinced. But the 3rd trip did the trick. He is still not obsessed to the point of posting on a Disney forum but he is hooked. Just thinking about how much he brags about how clean Disney is and how good the food is and how amazing everything is just brings a tear to my eye. He bragged about it so much to his family that joining us on this trip are….

Bill’s sister Samantha and her boyfriend Anthony.

P1020412-1.jpg

This will be both of their 2nd trips. Both of their trips were (separately) when they were in high school or middle school. Both were coming to Disney with one thing on their minds – FOOD. We had the dining plan on our last trip (free dining pin) and we got the pin again and Bill was bragging about the fantastic food we have encountered on our previous trips. Both were excited to stuff themselves full. (spoiler alert - mission accomplished)

This trip took place from May 17th – 24th. We were on the basic dining plan. And we were staying at the gorgeous, extravagant, larger than life, everyone’s favorite resort…you know it, you love it…starts with a P….O….takes you to a place you’ve never been. Say ‘Aloha’ to….

P1020821.jpg

POP CENTURY!!! Where else? :lookaroun We are avid Pop fans because we spend little time at the resort and can’t really justify shelling out the bucks for a place to sleep and shower.

So let’s get on with the show, shall we?

Monday May 16th“Do I really have to go to work today? Don’t they know I need to prepare for Disney tomorrow?”

Early morning work meetings are like getting jammed at the end of PoTC by the treasure room – always longer than expected. After listening to my boss and clients talk about something that was not Disney and therefore not interesting…I headed home to finish packing. Bill had just finished his first round of medical school boards (tests) so he was relaxing at home…leisurely packing. We finished up and headed to his parents house who live about 30 minutes away from the airport. We had a nice dinner with his parents and other siblings celebrating Bill being done with his boards. Then after a trip to the bar to REALLY celebrate…I put myself to bed for we had to get up early for our 7:50 flight.

Tuesday May 17th“Yes I do plan to ride SSE again and again…”
The alarm at 4 came quite quickly and we were showered and ready to hit the airport. We arrived without problem and got in line for TSA. And walking to the back of the line we spotted this man in line…

mario-lemieux-picture-1.jpg

(we didn't take a pic of him - too star struck - so this is from the internet)

Yes that is hockey legend Mario Lemieux. Former player and current owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Yeah…he’s kind of a big deal. So after our first (and only…unless you count Mickey Mouse…which, who am I kidding? You do.) celebrity sighting we headed through TSA. Samantha and Anthony were selected for body scans – Bill and I were not. True of our flight back to Pittsburgh as well. BUT who cares about heading back to Pittsburgh…we’re on our way to (as John would say) Walt F’in Disney World! We stopped for a delicious McDonalds breakfast before boarding our flight.

Flight was a bit bumpy – Samantha was not impressed, actually feeling rather sick from the bumps. When we landed the pilot informed us it was 70 degrees and sunny in Orlando, as well as 55 degrees and rainy in Pittsburgh. That’s what I love to hear! We got off the plane and bolted for Magical Express. This is when Anthony commented that all he saw through MCO was the back of my head as I was pretty much sprinting through the airport.

We’ve got places to go…Magical Expresses to catch. We walked through DME without problems and got the next bus that came. On the bus and off The Most Magical Place on Earth!!!!

We got to POP a little after 11 and our rooms were not ready. So after a quick change and checking our carry ons with the baggage people...we were heading out to the parks.

I had some red velvet cake last night and the whole time I was eating it I kept thinking "I bet the red velvet cheesecake cupcake is better than this!!" How sad is that? Comparing my food to Disney's... I actually do this on a somewhat regular basis though :lookaroun

My meal at Kona was just so-so as well. I had the coconut almond chicken. I did however LOVED the salad that came with it with the strawberries and lime dressing. DELISH!! My Mom and sister loved their meal (pan Asian noodles) We didn't get dessert but the torte looked really good!

Ooh, I agree! I had that red velvet cupcake this trip and it is a must do!!

I'm sorry your Kona server wasn't better!

I'm obsessed with that cupcake now!

Yeah our server was weirdly rude. Like we were discussing dessert options and shes like "sundae for real? what are you 5?" and then pineapple upside downcake (anthonys favorite cake) "come on thats for old people." it was just weird. And I asked for ketchup or something for my shrimp because the sauce was a little spicy and she goes "why? its not spicy" Um...it is to me, ma'am just get my ketchup! Just weird little things. Our server there last trip was fantastic so maybe we just had high expectations.

I totally do the same thing w/food. I eat it and say to Bill "you know what this reminds me of...that (insert food item here) we ate in Disney which was way better than this...can't wait to get that again."

Our first trip to Kona in 2010 was fantastic. So we had high expectations. I really wanted to get the teriyaki steak as it was really good but my stomach could not handle something that big. So I settled for the shrimp.scallop combo. It wasn't bad it just wasn't awesome and pair that w/my uneasy stomach and bad service - made for a less than stellar meal. But I see us returning in the future...if only for the bread! :slurp:

I had the same experience last time with Kona. LOVEd it first trip, had an aweseom server, blahdy blah, this time it was so bad. I was like literally so disappointed I wanted to just go to sleep. Then my niece said "It's ok MaeMae, you can go to the bar at the hotel and see the cute guy." LOL Because I LOVE Jonny at the POP bar. :/ It's bad how much time I seem to spend with him.

Hahaha! Yes it's a great time waster in between mountains of paperwork. I have all my pics on my home laptop so I only write text at work. But I'm going to finish tonight!!

Hahaha yes I think next time I'll just order a few lapu lapus and the bread. I think I could be happy with that.

May 24 - UNmagical Express comes to take me back to reality

Departure day! WAAAAAHHHH
We slept in a bit and called for a late check out. We were granted the request while Samantha and Anthony were denied. Not sure what makes one able to be checked out early vs another but oh well. So we packed up and headed down to the food court for one last meal.

Even though it was like 10-10:30...I had to get myself a POP waffle. It felt like a fitting departure meal.

P1020807-1.jpg

Goodbye old friend.

Someone (I forget who...I may or may not have never filled out this page in my Disney journal so I'm just going on pictures) got a pizza.

P1020808-1.jpg

Even though I don't like you Disney Pizza...I'll miss you.

I know Samantha got this super cute oreo cupcake
P1020809.jpg

She claimed it was the best cupcake she had all week. As she was in search for an amazing cupcake - she kicked herself that it was in the POP food court all this time!

We then did some last minute shopping at Pop and went to wait for the very UN Magical Express to come pick us up.

I took some shots around POP to remember it by

Waitin' for DME.
Check out Weezy chillin behind us (pointed out by John [blacktheidot])

Another one for John...

P1020813.jpg

Is yo @$$ hungry, girl? 'Cause it's eatin' dem jeans!

P1020814.jpg

Posing by the cute DME bus that was not ours.

P1020815.jpg

Soon another DME bus came...dropping people off. We then waited and bitterly stared down the people who were just starting their trip.

P1020816.jpg

Ugh…crazy how I loved you just a week ago and now I loathe you!

Welp...our bus finally came. Bill dragged me kicking and screaming away from POP. :lookaroun

We got to the airport…bought a few things at the gift shops, checked out the crazy expensive HP merch at the universal store (impressive but expensive) ate at the BK lounge and then boarded our flight. Nothing special to report on there.

Well…that’s the engagement trip! We had a blast!! Best trip by far. Ok maybe I'm bias due to the rock on my finger but it was still a fantastic trip. Our next trip is tentatively schedule (but not booked) for Sept. 2012 when Bill has his break from rotations. Thinkin' POFQ this time around. We'll see. I'm just excited for fall decorations!

Thanks for reading!

Overall Thoughts on the trip:

  • Obviously the engagement makes this the best trip ever!!
  • We had absolutely no rain at all. We even bought cute rain jackets that roll into little mesh bags for easy carrying - but I'm happy we never had to use them.
  • Crowds were low on most days - especially in the morning. I can't stress enough the importance of Disney mornings. It's crazy how much you can get done while people are still sleeping. Then when the crowds (and the heat) increase around 3...go back to your resort and nap! It was a great system that worked for us.
  • We loved POP for what it has been for us - a great place to stay for 2 broke college students. But now that I'm graduated and working...I think it's time to graduate resorts. POP had very long bus lines, very high amount of unsupervised kids running around at all hours of the night/morning. And we're just ready for something a little nicer. POFQ has caught our eye for it's intimate/quiet setting. But who knows - I may change my mind due to saving money at a Value and staying an extra day or so. We'll see. But Bill is set on trying POFQ.
  • Dining Plan was a good deal as far as price. We definitely could not eat all the food that we were given - but it's definitely the best way to experience table service. I'd never order all the steak/seafood that I do if I had to pay the menu price (not in my current economic state anyway) So I enjoy DDP because it gives us the chance to try TS places we'd never eat at w/o it.
  • Though I'd absolutely go w/o the DDP because then I could try places that are cheaper that I don't feel I get as good of a deal by using DDP. But the savings on expensive TS is too good to pass up!
  • Still disappointed in AK. Not really a fan of the Avatar announcement but if it brings good attractions to AK then I'm all for it. As much as I'd rather see EPCOT get some love - I know that AK needs it way more.

Thats all folks! Thanks again for reading!

That's so weird! I don't think it's high expectations to expect not to be mocked for your choices!

Several times on a cruise, if I don't see a dessert I want, I order a Mickey bar. I've had several servers tease me and tell me that's the "baby's dessert". But it was always just that! Teasing and they were laughing with me, not at me.

I laughed at your comment about the DME bus. I feel the same way about MCO. It's the happiest airport on earth at the beginning of your trip. That's before it becomes the saddest airport on earth.

Congratulations again!! I loved reading it all!

Waaahhhh!!! It's over!!! :(

POFQ looks so intimate and cute. That's the #1 resort on our list to stay in in the spring. We will have 1 night when we arrive (we're arriving at like midnight so we'll prolly pick a Value resort) and then we have 2 extra nights after our week in our timeshare. I'm thinking POFQ!!! Especially with a nice AP discount!!

Glad you guys had a blast!! Your ring is beautiful.. Congrats again!!

Great trip report! Your pictures of POP at the end are getting me excited for my trip starting on Monday!!! Me and my mom always stay at POP since we are always on the go and basically just sleep in the room. One day I will definitely try the other resorts.

And Congratulations again!!! :sohappy:

Congratulations! We had one of our "best trips ever" when we got engaged there too. My husband proposed right after 'Wishes.' Shortly after (during EMH), we got stuck on our favorite ride, TTA. Cold night, in one of the tunnels, fell asleep...then we were walked off the ride and got a bunch of fastpasses. Two years (almost to the day) later, we got married there (at Swan & Dolphin)...it was the happiest day of my life! We are going this November for our 2-year anniversary...but now we have our precious little munchkin to take with us!

Thanks for sharing a great report!

Yeah we were not a fan of the mocking. But if WDW restaurants sold Mickey bars for desserts at TS - I'd be ordering them too!

Yes I love the airport (PGH and MCO) on my way there. I literally skip through the airport saying "oh I love the airport" and have no problem waiting in long TSA lines. But on the way home its like "ugh - you again."

Yeah POFQ really calls to us because they say its so quiet and actually quite romantic. Now that the rooms are refurbished and have queen sized beds - we're sold!

Thanks so much for reading and for the kind words. It really was the trip of a lifetime.

Awesome report. I really enjoyed all the pictures and your story telling - and congratulations again!

I know, right? Like...that just looks so incredibly uncomfortable.

Thank you so much for reading and for the kind words on the engagement. I'm sad its all over. Retired the "Just Engaged" buttons was not easy.

Wonderful TR!! Really like all the POP pictures and the ddp info.

Glad you liked them!! DDP definitely gives us the freedom of choice with dining which I love - I'd usually order water/cheaper entree/no dessert to keep cost down. But its fun trying anything on the menu and not worry about price.

Thank you!! Yes POP is a great resort. We've stayed there for our past 4 trips. Long bus lines, sure...but we like the atmosphere and the great food court. Can't go wrong with POP! Thanks!!

tres cool ,congrats, very exciting report, wish you all the best. Also hoping for sept 2012 at POFQ:)

Thank you so much!! Maybe we'll see you in Sept. 2012!!!

Great report. Glad you had such an awesome trip! And congratulations on your engagement!!

Engaged at Disney - best club EVER. haha! It just enhanced the magic everywhere when you think "wow, I was proposed to here" I just can't wait to go back and take even more pictures in front of SSE. And even when I look at other peoples pictures of SSE I think "I got engaged right there!!!" I'd love to get married at WDW but we want a HUGE wedding (as we both have big families) and many of them wouldn't be able to afford Disney. So we're thinking of encorporating it into the honeymoon instead. But we're not getting married until 2013  so we've got some time! Thanks for reading!

Thoroughly enjoyed your report! Thank you for sharing your special trip. Congratulations on your engagement!! It's such a fun time. Say "fiancé" as often as you can (it's fun and can't say it forever :) ) and enjoy every moment while you plan.

And I seriously just spit out my water laughing when I caught glimpse of that hungry rear... Your comment -priceless!!:ROFLOL:

Congrats again!

Thanks so much for reading! Glad you enjoyed it! I really enjoyed writing it and definitely will write another one on my next trip. Thanks for the kind words on the engagement. We aren't getting married until 2013 (when he graduates med school) so I'll be sayin' a lot of "fiance" until then!

I can't lie - that is probably my favorite "funny" picture of the trip. Mean spirited or not...sometimes other people are funny. And taking pictures of them is funnier. And sharing those pictures is the funniest. Disney is the #1 best place for people watching.
