Poor Unfortunate Soles: A 2013 Marathon Weekend (5K, Half and Full Marathon) Trip Report!

Another Marathon Weekend at Disney has come to a close. Let me tell you about it!

The cast includes me (Shannon, 28), my husband Will (27), my brother Craig (aka Princess Craiggy, 26), my mom, Kriss, my aunt Laurie, and my mom’s childhood best friend Barb. I got no photo of all 6 of us, and in fact have no photos at all of my mom, aunt or Barb (not my choice). Le sigh.

Anyhoo, as the title of this report suggests, this year I participated in the 5K, half marathon and full marathon (unofficially known as the Dopey Challenge) during Disney’s Marathon Weekend. Originally this trip was strictly for the Goofy Challenge (the half and full), but the idea of the 5K had been in the back of my mind for a while...eventually I pulled the trigger and signed up in August.

In my previous race reports (for the 2011 Princess Half and the 2012 WDW Full) I rambled on quite a bit about training. This time around I’m going to restrain myself. :) I actually did document my training on a different message board (not sure why I didn’t do it here…I guess I wanted it to be somewhere where I felt more “anonymous.” I’m weird), so if anyone is interested in reading about that, shoot me a PM and I’ll send you the link. Or if anyone wants the Cliff’s Notes version I can post that here too. I will say that I am extremely Type A and was very, very diligent when it came to preparing for these races. I should also warn you that you won’t find any speedy fast times here, but if you’re looking for a somewhat detailed play-by-play of all 3 races with lots of character pictures, you’ve come to the right place. :)

You have covered so much in this trip report and it's beyond outstanding... but one thing that really jumped out at me was the red velvet cupcake LOL. I had been craving one for a while, and was hoping to find one on vacation... I didn't :( But, now I know, for next time, where they are and I can't wait!!!

I did, however, try one of those apples and it was AMAZING!!! I got the caramel apple coated in chocolate and Reeses Peanut Butter Cups. I could literally feel my blood sugar levels going up as I was eating it, but WOW. A little too much to handle for an "every trip" kinda treat, but definitely worth trying.

You're the second person recently to mention the Nutella waffle at Sleep Hollow. I have to try that next time. We had the sweet and spicy chicken waffle sandwich there, and it was delicious.

Mmmm... I'm getting hungry!!

Thanks for an awesome trip report and so glad (as a runner) you included at the end your running routine to get to run the Goofy. Thanks so much!!!!

What an awesome report, Shannon!!! :) I am soooooo not the runner, but your report really made me want to get up and run somewhere. :D I could never see myself doing more than the 5K, but still- even with all of the pain and early wake ups- it's very cool and quite the accomplishment! And I know this is going to sound silly, but even I got a little misty when you described getting your Goofy medal. Seeing your pics from the GF, especially the ones with the water pageant, have me putting it back on my "must try" list...that and Jiko. Oh how I want to try the mac & cheese!. Congrats again on completing all of the races!

Awesome report Shannon!! And CONGRATS on all your shiny new bling!!! :)

The Ohana breakfast pictures made me drool - seriously. I LOVE the breakfast potatoes there. YUM!!

So awesome that both Will and Princess C got to see you during the last part of the race :)

I'm thinking I MIGHT do the Castaway Cay 5k. Depends how much running I can get in before the cruise. I've already started working on the eliptical and I'm going to start running again soon so we will see.

Thanks for sharing your wonderful weekend with us! I love reading your TR's :D

Awesome report, Shannon! It truly is amazing how much was done in what seemed like such a crazy short span of time. I'm sorry that you weren't able to hang out in the parks as much as you and Will would have liked. Glad to know that you have a longer trip planned in December so you can enjoy yourselves. :D

Such an amazing accomplishment getting the Goofy! (and going Dopey while you're at it!) All that swag will hold some awesome memories for you I'm sure. I did like you're "I did it!" shirt in one of the last few pictures. Certainly well deserved.

Loved all your pictures too! Definitely made me miss WDW and put me in the mindset to plan an anniversary trip this October. :) I'd love to register for the Tower of Terror 10mi so I'll see how that goes. The good thing is I'm registered for a 10K (my first!) at home this May so at least I'll get some training in. I remember reading various TRs from that weekend and it sounded like a fun time. Also I suppose it would give me a reason to FINALLY ride the Tower.

Thanks for sharing another great trip report!

Thanks! I don't blame you for focusing on the red velvet cupcake...I mean, it's a RED VELVET CUPCAKE. Definitely keep in mind that Starring Rolls closes at 4PM. They have small boxes so that you can take the cupcake to go. :)

Your apple sounds awesome! Some day I will work up the courage to get one of those things. Have you seen pictures of the Nutella waffle? It looks sooooo good. Anything with Nutella and waffle can't be bad in my book.

Aaaaaand now I'm hungry too. :D

Thanks for reading! If you want any more information on what I did to train, let me know here or shoot me a PM! :)

Thank you! :) You should totally try a Disney 5K sometime. I could see Kendall and Sammie doing the kids' races...how fun would that be?!

We really did have some awesome experiences on this trip. GF really blew both of us away. And you won't regret trying that mac and cheese at Jiko. :D Sooooo good.

Thanks for the congrats and for reading! :)

Thanks Darolyn! Will was all about the breakfast potatoes at 'Ohana too. Man, I want to go back there sooo badly. YUM!

You should do the Castaway Cay 5K! Heck, you've already done a 10-miler, you know you can do a 5K now. :) I'm pretty sure this is the only time I will get to go on a cruise, so this is my one shot at that race. I'm looking forward to it!

Thanks for reading!!

Thanks Erin! Yeah, these races weekends are HECTIC, that's for sure. I'm still a little sad we didn't get as much park time, but I guess we sort of knew what we were getting in to.

The "I Did It!" shirts are a wee bit cheesy, but I'm so glad I have them. They're fun.

Yay for an October trip!! Good idea registering for a 10K...make sure you use that time when you register for the 10-miler (because I'm just gonna go ahead and assume you WILL DO IT! :D) or when you go to packet pick-up, because it will help you with your corral placement! Wait, you've NEVER ridden the Tower?! YOU MUST. Best ride ever! Especially if you have a shiny new ToT medal to show off. :)

I'm pretty sure this cruise will be the only one I go on just because I know he'll never do it. You should join us on the Dream in September!! :D

Isn't your wedding sooooon?? YAY!

That cruise is tempting.... very tempting... maybe after we figure out our honeymoon I can throw that into the picture.:D

the wedding well that's in....two days!!!!! I feel I should be more nervous - I seriously have more anxiety about delays when traveling than I do about this wedding.

Word to the wise on the Nutella waffle - they are huge, definitely best to have someone with you who also loves the chocolatey hazelnut yumminess that is Nutella and make sure this is someone you aren't afraid to get a little messy in front of, warm Nutella melts pretty well.

AHHH good luck with all the last-minute preparations! I wasn't nervous for our wedding at all until right before I walked down the aisle...I totally know what you mean, travel delays are much more taxing.

Definitely think about the cruise! :) Although honeymoons are important too...

Thank you, oh wise one. :D

That's why I was hoping to get one after one of the races...I figured I'd have no trouble (and feel no guilt) crushing one of those bad boys by myself. I'm guessing that when I do finally try it it'll either be my entire lunch or I'll have to accept defeat and split it with Will. OMG I so want one of those right now...

Excellent Trip Report. Couldn't fall asleep last night, and this was excellent reading to pass the time. I admire anyone who can do the marathons like these. I didn't even know they had a Marathon and a Half! My legs felt sore just reading about all that running.

I admit, you made me consider doing a 5K even though I can't run well to save my life.

Thanks! Yep, running at Disney has really taken off over the last couple of years...they have the marathon, half marathons, a 10-miler, a 10K at Disneyland, 5Ks and kids races. Lots of stuff going on! And if you want to do a 5K, you can - walkers are more than welcome. :) Info at www.rundisney.com
Congrats!!!!!! That is such a huge accomplishment - thanks for sharing your experience!
Thank you! :) And thanks for reading!!

HELLOOOOO FELLOW CRUISER!!!!!!

I will be totally doing the Castaway 5K with you! :)

FInally starting to get caught up on here!!!! I loved hearing your reports of all the races this weekend! i don't think I could do all three! Not sure if I ever want to do a Marathon either...half I'll do definitely the Princess in 2014. Would love to go for the weekend and do the Wine & Dine this year but not sure. I have got the bug after the 10-miler last year! Not sure I'll ever do that one again, the course was just through one park and the characters lacking. Anyways! Glad to see there was alot of characters along the race course!

And my favorite pictures have to be of you with Mickey mouse pretending you're running. Those are just super cute!!! And your room at the Grand is just AWESOME! I would love to try to stay there one day.

CONGRATULATIONS ON ALL YOUR MEDALS!!!!!!!!!! :D

I forgot to ask...did you use your camera that you took the mirror shot with, while running?? If you did how did you carry that??? And if not what did you use?

That is the best Mickey picture. So awesome!!
I'm sorry the last day was hard! But it's okay, you'll be back and you'll get more chances. :)
I'm so glad you said you would do it again too! Of course the Castaway Cay 5K is going to be a walk in the park for you guys, but I am excited to see you do it!

Shannon!! I've been reading your report over the last couple weeks and, of course, there was so much I wanted to say that I've now forgotten. Booooo. Let's see....

- You know I love a good song lyric turned trip report title. So add me to the long list of people impressed with your wit!

- CONGRATS, my friend. Talk about taking on a challenge and crushing the goals you set for yourself! I'm glad you stuck to your own training plan and did it your own way. That makes it even better. And to think you even had a negative split. WOW!

-You know what's kinda crazy? Of all your character pictures, the ones I geeked out over most were Daisy and Pluto during the 5K. I really appreciate your honest review of the 5K. After reading it, I don't know that I would want to do one during one of the race weekends. The Everest Challenge was fun, but I think it's entirely different.

- When I read about your disappointment over not getting to see Will when you were running past the Grand, it reminded me so much of my and Brett's relationship. That is exactly how I would've reacted. No reason to get huffy over it when you know full and well that he's already upset with himself and it wasn't intentional.

- The surprise at the Wide World of Sports?!?!? Yikes. I would've been CRUSHED to say the least. You already know I was one of those people who contemplated running the full simply on the off chance that there would be a crazy bazaar of rare characters set up at the Wide World of Sports. On the flip side... that special anniversary bling is a beauty. So it would've been okay in the end.

- Your room at the Grand Floridian? Yes, please! I'm thinking your review has won me over and Brett and I are going to have to make this one a must for at least part of our next stay on property.

- Thanks for the shout out... it's hard to believe we claimed our "hill" at the Polynesian two years ago!

- Castaway Cay 5K here we come!

There was so much more, I only wish I could remember it all. Congratulations, again!

HELLOOOO!!!!! Let's see, what's the countdown at...194 days?! Give or take a few?? Woot!

I forgot to ask...did you use your camera that you took the mirror shot with, while running?? If you did how did you carry that??? And if not what did you use?
No, I carried a smaller Canon Powershot camera...I did see a guy carrying a DSLR during the 5K though! Would NOT recommend that. Here's the one I have, the Canon Powershot SD1300 IS (except I think it was about $60 cheaper when I got it...I think the price shot up because they don't make that model anymore). When I did the Princess Half I looped the small camera case I have onto my fuel belt to carry the camera, but that ended up being a huge pain, so for last year's marathon and the races this year I've just carried it in my hand with the strap around my wrist, and that's worked out well. Even with all the sweat and whatnot it's survived 5 races!
Wow! The fence story and chaffing are just wow!! Ouch!!
That is the best Mickey picture. So awesome!!
I'm sorry the last day was hard! But it's okay, you'll be back and you'll get more chances. :)

I probably should have put a TMI warning up before the chafing story... That probably didn't help to convince you to start running, did it? :p
I love that Mickey picture! It's the current lock screen on my phone. :D
It was just a very different trip than what we're used to...but you're right, we will definitely be back! I wish we'd kept that perspective a little more, but what can ya do?
I can't wait for the Castaway Cay 5K!!!..and the cruise itself, of course. The countdown is in the 100s!!
Shannon!! I've been reading your report over the last couple weeks and, of course, there was so much I wanted to say that I've now forgotten. Booooo. Let's see....
Holly! I saw your report pop up this weekend...glad you're back! :)
- You know I love a good song lyric turned trip report title. So add me to the long list of people impressed with your wit!
Aw shucks, thanks. I'm proud of that one, not sure I'll come up with something better - or as good - for future reports. Fingers crossed!
- CONGRATS, my friend. Talk about taking on a challenge and crushing the goals you set for yourself! I'm glad you stuck to your own training plan and did it your own way. That makes it even better. And to think you even had a negative split. WOW!
Thanks! Yeah, I don't want to make it seem like I'm a know-it-all...but I'm still annoyed at the person that told me I wasn't doing enough. Boo!
You will understand this - my heart SANK when I saw how long those character lines were. Part of me wishes I'd just waited...it very well could have added 30-45 minutes to my time, but that was the one race without a sweep clock and it's not like I was going for a personal record or anything.

It really was a fun, well-organized race (as all Disney races are), but when all was said and done, between the registration fee, the cost of the pin and the Active.com fees it cost me almost $75 for the 5K alone. I really think it's the most overpriced of all of the races (not counting the kids races, because I don't know anything about those), and that's saying something. And speaking of price...the EE Challenge now costs $220 per team! That's INSANE. But that seems to be the only race Will is interested in doing and I really want him to run a race with me...that will definitely be a one-and-done for us.
- When I read about your disappointment over not getting to see Will when you were running past the Grand, it reminded me so much of my and Brett's relationship. That is exactly how I would've reacted. No reason to get huffy over it when you know full and well that he's already upset with himself and it wasn't intentional.
Yeah, I LOVED seeing him later on but I knew him oversleeping wasn't on purpose. He was SO MAD at himself...when we were texting and he realized he'd missed me his reaction was less-than-magical, to say the least. :D It was so much better seeing him later in the race though. I'm glad we were able to meet up then.
They just shouldn't have said anything. I know they need to describe the course in such a way that it seems attractive to sign up for the race...but really?? If I hadn't known about it ahead of time it would have been so neat. :( And I was right there with you in thinking the surprise would be tons of rare characters. I had actually thought about skipping photos I wanted earlier in the race to make sure I had time for the surprise, so I'm glad I didn't do that. And oh the bling...I have such a crush on that medal. It's weird. :D
- Your room at the Grand Floridian? Yes, please! I'm thinking your review has won me over and Brett and I are going to have to make this one a must for at least part of our next stay on property.
YES. Definitely my favorite room we've have at Disney so far. I'm looking forward to going back when the construction is done and we have sufficient time to really soak it all in. I think you guys will like it...just being on the grounds, in the lobby, out in the courtyard...it's just so relaxing. Love it there.
- Thanks for the shout out... it's hard to believe we claimed our "hill" at the Polynesian two years ago!
:D You're welcome! I had to point out to Will that it was "your hill." Has it really been two years already?! Sheesh, time flies. And hey, thanks for the emails that weekend! So sweet of you. :)
- Castaway Cay 5K here we come!

There was so much more, I only wish I could remember it all. Congratulations, again!

I would be surprised if anything short of chasing her with scissors is going to convince Tammy to start running. :) But, hey, the chafing story is an excellent reason too, right, @Disneyfalcon? ;)

Yeah, I don't think I'll ever do all 3 again... You'll love the Princess Half, it's such a fun race. And if you have the bug now, who knows...you may find yourself re-thinking the marathon at some point. ;) I haven't done either of the night races yet but it does seem to me like there are more characters at the morning races compared to the ToT 10-miler and the W&D Half. Yep!!! Right about there!!!

We'll see how a few half marathon's take me then we'll talk about the marathon! lol. After the 10-miler I didn't even want anything to do with running again cuz I felt awful...but look at me now still got the bug! lol. There was definitely not that many characters out at the 10-miler. I was actually seriously considering making my first half the Wine and Dine this year and doing Princess too and heck I even thought of going to Disneyland in 2014 for the first time and trying for Coast-to-coast! Ugh one park stunk too for the 10-miler even though it was my favorite still.

Ahhh okay. I was a little worried you carried that huge thing i was like how did she do that?!?!?! I carried a small camera around my wrist as well...just had to switch everyonce in a while. lol. Your point and shoot camera did take really good pics during the race!!!!

Yeah, it's funny how quickly we forget the pain of those Disney races. :p I think you'll like the Princess - BUT - be aware that it's gotten incredibly crowded over the last few years. Definitely make sure to try to get in as high a corral as possible.

No, I like my camera way too much to subject it to a race like that. I'd sweat all over it and probably end up dropping it at some point...plus it's hard enough just running, add in carrying a big DSLR and I'd probably collapse. :p
