Pokemon Go at the Disney Parks

yea, thats where I think i loose it more...I was a pre-Poki kid, I grew up in the Nintendo Duck Hunt, Original Mario Bros and Mike Tyson Punch out times. So the lingo in this thread is well over my head. I never understood or got into the Poki craze.

Agreed, and that was kind of part of my post as well. We (and our kids) already are sucked into our smart phones and not paying attention to people around them ....and all the while at this amazing theme park built to be looked at.

That said, I do really love Virtual and Augmented Reality. I think its really the future of smart computing and has awesome capabilities. So to that, this looks very cool. I just never understood Poki, so the concept is lost on me.
Omg I LOVED Duck Hunt!!! Paperboy was my favorite though..and the Power Pad..lol.
I'm in my late 30s so pre Pokemon days as well.

I heard about this new game was from a few guys at work and Facebook posts.
I think the only thing my kid knows about Pokemon is the stupid stuffed animals that he wins at our local amusement park.

It isn't about attention span. People judge the stuffing out of me because I sit in the parks to read. I live here. It's extremely relaxing to find a good spot to read. I also fully intend to play this when I'm next in the park. It's fun. That doesn't mean that Disney is -not- fun. It means I have 365 day access to these parks but this game is new. Unless someone is on their phone during an attraction or performance, leave them alone and enjoy your vacation. I assure you, they're having a good time too.
I saw a girl doing her homework by the castle when I was there in January and I was SO JEALOUS. I just assumed she lived nearby or was a cast member after her shift. If I lived there I would definitely go to the parks to just hang out/read/get some exercise.

I was originally worried about playing GO in the parks because it's a massive battery drain... I've managed to kill my phone in under 2 hours. But with the rechargeable/ swappable battery packs available now in the parks, it sounds like i could be hunting pokemon from park opening to close

Clueless, except our boys played Pokemon and collected the cards. I remember youngest being thrilled when he opened a pack and found "Charzard?"- apparently a valuable card. So....who determines where a character is placed- the Pokemon game company? Are locations based on GPS?

For locals or those who go often, it might be something new to do while there.

The pokemon are mostly placed randomly, and your tracked using gps. I've noticed there are certain locations where more rare pokemon will randomly spawn. It's really neat, because if you're playing with friends you all run into the same pokemon at the same time. It seems like playing at disney would be a blast, lots of stops and gyms.

Typical going price these days for one of those is $150 to $500 for an ungraded card. Sometimes Charizards can command 6000 bucks on eBay.
WHOAH!?! Hold on!! Charizard is not going for $6000.....and if it is, no one is paying that.

i was an avid card collector in my youth, i had a couple standard edition charizards and at their max would easily command $75... but not today. A 1st edition, which were hard to find in the first place, went for a couple thousand... and i see people still asking that today, but i feel like the value of the market isn't really there anymore.

The game software puts them in random places...like could be in the middle of a highway or a restaurant? What are gyms for?
I appreciate your help. "I'm hip to Pokemon Go"- will impress my boys next time they come by!

Yeah its pretty random, i saw one in the middle of the highway yesterday. And pokestops have like pokeballs and other random freebies including exp points. I havent leveled up enough to try out the gyms, but im guessing this is where you can battle/trade/etc?

I see, thanks. Sounds like fun for the kids and young-at-heart who remember Pokemon.

Another good reason for people to stay glued to their smartphones.
Seems to be the way of things now, for good or for bad. But, I have to say that having grown up around and having used paper maps to find my way around towns and states, I sure do love my Waze! And, being able to text a pic of carefree DH and I at the World to our envious sons is wonderful! We ask ourselves often 'How did we ever live without our smart phones?' But, you know, we did. :)

I remember when I was a kid my dad would always use paper maps and we would spend most of our trips lost LOL. But I do appreciate waze for those times i ended up in sketchy areas!

For those interested, the company behind the pokemon GO app, Niantic makes as app called "Field Trip"

It's a location based guide, with tons of neat info on your immediate area, things like photos, fun facts articles, historical information. I haven't tried it around disney, but it's got hundreds of points of interests in new orleans and other major cities... would be pretty neat to try on disney next visit.

if we're all going to be glued to our phones we can at least use them to enhance our trip, instead of detract!

This makes me wish I either went to Disney World in July instead of June or Pokemon GO came out in June. My Disney World trip would've been a great time to play Pokemon GO!
