News Pirates of the Caribbean closing for refurbishment in February for new auction scene

This whole thread has me wondering:
Am I a horrible person because the one I've felt badly for all these years is poor, water-boarded Carlos?
ETA: Who, upon retrospect, was ironically told not to be "chicken"?
(I'll see myself out.)
OMG Don't bring up waterboard or the people who are screaming Rape-Culture will have a new target and the pirates will have to start dunking a chicken into the well

For me, audio recording / voice acting completely ruins the new scene. When the footage first got released, I watched it without the sound and I thought, "wow, this looks amazing!" I loved the movement of the redhead animatronic and the whole overall look of the new scene.

But then I watched it again, this time with the sound, and completely changed my mind. The redhead's voice doesn't sound intimidating or "pirate" like at all - my first thought was that she sounded like Jimmy Neutron or some character from a children's show. "Quit yer cluckin"? Seriously?

The auctioneer sounds like a terrible pirate impersonator. "Strike your feathers, show them your flock" makes no sense and it sounds like a first grader's attempt to rewrite the original dialogue to fit the context of the new scene.

And don't get me started on the other pirates. Whenever I watch the scene again and hear the "I'll give you twenty...FOR THE RUM" I seriously cringe. The delivery of that line makes my ears bleed. And changing "we wants the redhead" to "we wants the rum" is just an insult to the many, many people who were upset about this change to begin with.

Compared to the timeless, humorous audio of the rest of the ride, this scene now just sticks out like a sore thumb. Not even a sore thumb - more like a thumb that's been smashed with a hammer and is now swollen to ten times the size it used to be.

Sorry for the rant. But POTC has always been one of my favorite, if not my all-time favorite ride at WDW, so the fact that there's now a scene in it that makes me physically cringe is really disappointing to say the least. I hope they come to their senses and at LEAST change the audio, which I would imagine wouldn't be that hard to fix.

This comment time a 1000 - simple fix Disney

But ... but ... you just hate change for the sake of it! SHAME ON YOU!

;)

[Sarcasm font: ON]

So many things about the change annoy me. It's not even about the change for the sake of it now, it's about how poor of a job they did and that they could have done much better. I'm sure for many it will be "fine" but it's a little annoying to always be lumped in with hating change just for hating change. That's not always the case and it's usually a little deeper and if some posters were interested in an actual discussion on what's wrong instead of just calling us haters ... (not geared towards you, of course, lol, just an observation)

Anywho ....

The redhead still has brown hair now to me. Unless it looks red in person but pictures have me seeing brown. They couldn't get the face or the hair right. It's terrible.

It is definitely not red. It is more of a mousy brown. Perhaps where she is standing the black lights make it brown. Nonetheless she is not the same red head we love

heck..people could even boycott the Depp & Rush animatronics for the alleged domestic & sexual assault allegations against them

Why don't you listen to what we were told a few pages back, and mosey on over to the Social Issues version of this thread if you want to keep denying rape culture?

Any further discussions of social issues must be taken to the Politics and Social Issues forum. Thank you. There is an ongoing discussion about this very attraction there.

I thought it was well done. I think the Redhead looks awesome, and I'm glad she is no longer being sold to men. I also enjoy that they "kept" the whole "We wants the..." and just changed it to "we wants the rum". I thought it was a positive change & I'm glad it was done. :)

Good to hear. I'm sure it will be fine in person. I'm disappointed in some things but if I didn't know what was there before it seems fine. Personally I'd have done it differently. I don't really mind the whole chanting for rum, I just wish they handled the scene a little differently. Oh well.

Does the hair look at least red in person? lol That's really bugging me

I think this disappointment not only has diminished the redhead but also (perhaps more importantly) the auctioneer.

He was arguably the coolest character and the most advanced animatronic in the entire attraction. And now ... I guess the bot is still advanced. But he's really into selling chickens now. It's like when a good friend starts selling Amway.
