Photos of the Cantina de San Angel walled off ready for demolition

My kids would have no argument with that logic. But for me, in that heat, a salad and a mint tea from Morocco always seems to be the best thing. But I'm sure we'll hit the new place if it's open....:)
I do have to say, that does sound appealing. :slurp:
Yep. The Mexico laser has one angle where it shoots onto the Cantina roof and bounces back off, towards but well above the middle of the lagoon. It is best seen at the end of Chaos when it repeats rapidly.

I`d be interested to see what happens now too.

No expert here, but could they re direct it?

If I weren't a cold, shivering FL boy I would get off my backside and go watch it tonight. Just not from Morocco/France... :lookaroun

Just kidding.

AWESOME pic, Martin! :D

Is it possible for it to NOT shine off that? I saw it just blink a few times across the lagoon.

That is one of the many programmed positions for the beam. I don`t know if it can be deactivated or just blocked simply by placing an object in front of it upstairs.

I do know each beam is precisely placed and aligned - as you see before each show - and if one beam deviates by 6 - 12ft (I can`t recall the exact figure) the lasers are E Stopped.

AH!

So THAT'S what I was seeing. Was watching from our table at R/C and could not figure out for the life of me why all the lasers were flicking on and off.Nor could Lee, I texted him about it.

Do they do any other pre-show tests? I know we saw some lights go on on the Inferno Barge and the Earth Barge was moved into position only a few mins before the show begain...It was very intereting.

Like any big production (stage or otherwise), I'm sure there is a very long checklist that is performed before each and every show. I've seen them working and testing things during the day where a random country would have its strobes going off (I think I have a video clip somewhere of looking across the lagoon at Canada's strobes going off), or a single torch would light for a minute or two...

While I am no expert on the subject it is my understanding each laser is aimed and focused at each primary target a few hours before every show. The lasers you saw going on and off were likely this test in progress. It is interesting to watch the one in AM shoot the ball as this test seems to take the longest. I often wondered if there are sensors on SSE or if someone from the show gets to hike all the way to the front of the park to spot it while they aim/focus it.

It was my understanding each of the barges has a health and status light separate from the nav lights to indicate good comm for the show. If the lights go out you usually don't see anything from that barge.

Some time before the show they fire up the big diesel engines on each barge that pump the water for the fountains. They run each fountain before each show, but it is usually dark and not easy to see. Unless you are looking for it. :lookaroun Also, if you are on the promenade when they fire them up and realize what you are hearing you begin to appreciate how much water they are moving.

Others on this web site have much more detailed and accurate info than I on WDW pyro and ROE. (Anybody remember Force9?) They most likely have first hand knowledge, but they usually don't pipe up unless somebody says something really off the wall. ***Hides, waits to find out how wrong he is****

HIGHLY interesting, and yes, you can see all the lights go on and off while they prep the show, I was watching closely from the RC while waiting for our meal.

Thanks for posting, very informative stuff. :D

Since the thread has moved to the realm of the laser, I just thought I'd toss out that I heard on NPR 2010 was the 50-year anniversary of the invention of the laser. Impressive that they've been around since 1960, and how far they've come in their uses when you stop and think about it....

those pictures looks awesome!
I assume you mean the ones in Steve's links. Yeah, that was quite the haul. Those pictures/info are what attracted me to the site in the first place. I would love to get more info on the current show, or maybe even a keys to the kingdom type treatment, but alas the mice in money suits, and more importantly the ATF, probably would frown on disseminating such knowledge regardless of your intentions.

Back on topic, sort of. I still wonder what the plan is once the mirrors are gone from the Cantina roof. Does anybody know if there are second order mirrors, and more specifically are there any 2nd order faces associated with one on the Cantina? Martin probably has the best answers with his ISO lock down shots.

Does anybody know if they will push out into the lagoon for the new restaurant? It seems they would have to if they also intend to have any seating for the rumored counter service. I mean there is really very little room there unless you count the pebble beach surrounding the the fence. 400 seats, and Que, and kitchen/prep/dumb waiter seems like a lot for that plot never mind the counter service area.

The rumors swirling around last year said that the new restaurant would be a two-story building, so we could very well see Table Service on the top floor (with nice, big windows and/or balcony looking out on the Lagoon, I'm sure) and Counter Service on the first floor.

I would think so, how else would they do it...

I REALLY hope that's not the case. It would totally destroy the sightlines for the pavilion behind it AND the rest of WS. :brick:

I wouldn't mind if they started expanding out into the lagoon to create better viewing experiences. Jim Hill once posted a picture of an Austrailian pavilion concept extending out into the lagoon. It was very impressive. So I think it could work. It could create more immersive pavilions too.

Care to link, jt?

I wouldn't mind the removal of the beach, either.

Really??? I think its delicious!

I'm sure its just a personal preference, living in Texas we get authentic Mexican food everywhere. I thought the food was good just lacking the spice of Mexican food Im use to. Most noticeable the hot sauce on the table was pretty weak. I have heard that is good to eat from alot of other people on this forum. So maybe I need to give it another try?
