Lee-weren't you the one that said you got an email from an insider a mth before the Avatar announcement-even though Staggs and Iger did the deal in private? Not even Joe Rhode knew about it till a few days before!
When you open your eyes its amazing what you will see. I know here comes everyone to yell at me.

Haven't we been over this before?

I had heard a tiny hint about it a few weeks before the announcement, and didn't believe it.
People at WDI knew about it before then, and had been involved in some early conceptual work which was used to pitch the idea to Jim Cameron.

I certainly didn't know about it before Joe. You seem to be under the impression that Iger and Staggs worked in complete isolation right up until the announcement. That is certainly not the case.

I think you're on the right path. Check the outside of the larger tent as well. They are adding some serious concrete to the outer wall. My guess is that the old tents didn't meet some of the newer safety standards and when they get rebuilt, it will require additional support poles (on the footings) and a larger base around the outside where the new concrete molds are located. Structurally, it will look far more like a building and less like a tent when they are done.

My day job is in architecture and I saw the concrete forms on the outside walls as well and thought it would've been related to the newer more stringent building codes for wind load and all, plus its probably better for heating and cooling. Those pad footing holes in the middle on the otherhand, seem way too large and deep for just extra support for roof structure. If they had to add support they could easily get away with smaller 2 or 4 foot square column footings just under the level of the concrete floor slab. They wouldn't put the grid of steel rebar in the base for plumbing or electrical runs and most of that stuff is only a foot or so below slab. By my estimation these holes look to be about 4 or 5 feet deep and 20-25 feet square.

I think there's got to be something else to them. Some kind of recessed mechanical pit for something that's either fairly heavy or shakes a bunch. It just seems like a lot of extra foundation work for what's been billed as just retail and M&G space. I'm not one to speculate and I don't know the requirements of ride footings or show elements and all, but I just think there's something more there we just haven't heard about yet.

love the pictures, can't wait to see the next ones.

I will have some new aerials in about 2 or 3 weeks. I have to say these are the best aerials to date. I really like how the waterways and bridges are coming together. Looks great. Thanks for the aerials Steve/Keaton.

Is anyone else surprised that they didn't put anything in the area between Belle's Cottage and the wall? The whole area seems to be jammed except for that one place. It's almost like they had something for that area but axed it for whatever reason.

It looks like there are three paths leading to the Enchanted Tales with Belle attraction. The one going into Maurice's Cottage is obviously the entrance. And the path leading from the attraction's northern edge seems like a natural fit for an exit, since the attraction is supposed to bring you from the cottage to the Beast's castle through a magic mirror.

But it those are the entrance and exit, I'm not sure what the path leading from the attraction's southern edge is supposed to be.

Do you have your pilot's license and personal aircraft?

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Worldwide has sealed a deal with filmmaker James Cameron and producer Jon Landau, Fox and Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment to create themed attractions at Disney parks based on the 2009 movie. The first themed “land” will be built at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, with construction expected to start by 2013. The first Avatar attraction will be inside the Animal Kingdom park. Disney said this was chosen because “with its emphasis on living in harmony with nature, Animal Kingdom is a natural fit for the Avatar stories, which share the same philosophy.” Cameron and Landau, through Lightstorm, will be creative consultants and partner with Walt Disney Imagineering in the design and development of the Avatar attractions, which eventually will be at other Disney parks worldwide as well. The deal is exclusive to Disney, which plans to roll out other Avatar attractions over time. Some of that will depend on discussions with joint venture partners on parks outside the U.S. The parks will not only play off the huge hit movie which dominated the box office for months in 2010, but also benefit from the release to two more movies now in pre-production. Cameron has announced plans to release those movies at Christmas 2014 followed by the second at Christmas 2015.

The announcement was made at WDI and no-one knew about it until it happened. Word is Joe Rohde was not in the loop on this.

w Joe Rohde. At 18:25 he says that Avatar is coming to AK and quote "thats all I know". "I can't wait to start to work on the project" HMMM... sounds fishy for you pal.
I just don't believe you. I might be the only one on here. That's fine. It's all good. I just had to have my say and be done w/ it. I won't comment anymore. Until you say something out of left field again like your Avatar email thing. That was just nuts!!!! LOL

I'm not sure whether I should be insulted or flattered that you spend so much time trying to make me come across as a liar...
The announcement was made at WDI and no-one knew about it until it happened.
Not accurate at all.
Do you really think Iger and Staggs cooked this all up between the two of them? Then called a press conference and surprised everyone else in the company? Hardly.
Here is a quote from the Hollywood Reporter (emphasis mine):
DEAL OF THE WEEK: How Disney Got Avatar Land: During the year of discussions that led to Disney announcing a deal Sept. 20 to bring Avatar to its theme parks, director James Cameron and producer Jon Landau were adamant that the highest-grossing film of all time not be turned into just another movie-inspired ride.
They say it took a year. I haven't heard it goes back that far, but still...
Once the idea was hatched between Iger and Staggs, it then had several hurdles to clear. First they had to get Cameron to agree. This was much more complicated than just calling him up and asking "Hey, Jim! Wanna put some Avatar in a Disney park?" and him responding "Sure, fellas! Sounds great!"
Cameron did not come on board until the idea was pitched to him. This involved showing him some basic art and concepts, and explaining to him how it would work.
Then, once Cameron had agreed in principal, the details had to be worked out. This involved legal teams going over the deal with a fine-tooth comb and hashing out an agreement that was acceptable to Disney, Cameron, his producing partners and Fox.
Only then, when a deal was in place, did they announce it to the public. Sure, it was kept unusually quiet, but to say nobody knew about it....that just isn't accurate at all. Quite a few people knew about it.
Word is Joe Rohde was not in the loop on this.
True to a point. Joe didn't hear about it until it was already decided that AK was going to be the location. He wasn't consulted prior to the decision to offer the AK to Cameron, but he certainly wasn't surprised on the day of the announcement.

Fishy for me? Please.
Joe's statement is true, because that is all anyone knows at this point. No attractions have moved beyond the blue sky phase, there are no budgets and absolutely nothing is set in stone. Not sure how that is unclear...

Sure. Believe what you want. It brightens my week to be called a liar by someone who obviously doesn't know what they are talking about...
But, whatever. I'll let my record speak for itself.

Now then...enough of the thread hijack. Anyone want to talk about Fantasyland...

No and no, but I'm about half way done with my private and my buddy owns a mooney.

Good on you. I am halfway on logged hours at this point without having to yet pay for seat time. A good friend of mine has a Bonanza and 172. Once I finish I will begin a hunt for a 152 to fly from here to my family's beach house which is about 100 miles from my house Wright Airport.

On topic. Aerial views really give a whole new perspective. They surely will become interesting once major footing work for SDMC is underway as well as pathway pouring.

That third path may also be an exit. I am sure this attraction will feature more than one show room, so multiple exits would not be a surprise.

New Fantasyland (early 2012) – The largest expansion project in Magic Kingdom history will open in phases beginning February 2012 at Walt Disney World Resort, featuring attractions and experiences in an area that will nearly double the size of Fantasyland. Among the novelties, guests will be able to fly high with The Great Goofini or with Dumbo the Flying Elephant, “immerse” themselves in Under the Sea ~ Journey of the Little Mermaid and “be our guest” at the Beast’s Castle. Out of the gate in early 2012 will be The Barnstormer coaster, Fantasyland Station and – for the first time anywhere turning counter-clockwise – the first half of the Dumbo the Flying Elephant attraction. Completion of The New Fantasyland is scheduled for 2014 with most new experiences open by 2013.

lee i would just like to say curse you for stickin with that darn 2014 date.. :) i really thought they could make 2013.. well time to rethink vacation plans

Sorry...:o
Looks like the timeline I have is holding up, other than it looks like they are going to open half of Dumbo with the train and Goofini. I suppose some nice green walls will funnel guests over to that small part of Storybook Circus.

I'm curious to how the Dumbo show building is going to look when they finish things up. I imagine they will plant some additional trees behind the building, but what catches my attention is that the building will be yellow from behind as well....Don't they usually paint buildings a natural green color or something to blend with trees? I may be mistaken but doesn't the Haunted Mansion have a greenish color to the show building?
I know where dumbo was originally planned to be was near mermaid in a spot where the show building would have been back stage....what do you guys think?

That's a good question. I had assumed they would put some themeing on the side and back of the building to make it look appropraite to the speedway, but not sure what the plan is at this point. I am also curious about the one segment of yellow on the main tent roof. If you look back in the construction photos you can see that it's been there for quite a while. Not sure if the entire roof will be that color or not.
