Dark and Cramped? It is not dark and cramped...It is not a vast open space, but far from Dark and Cramped...lol The thing that makes trhe Wilderness and Animal Kingdom Lodges so spectacular it the height and open volume... none of which does this building have...So without the waterfall it will just look average...Well, it IS brighter in the center and the lobby does look larger... Rather than the dark, cramped look of today. Not that I'm saying this is a good thing:
I will miss the waterfall. If they could sell air freshener for the way the Polynesian lobby used to smell then I might be okay. Oh well, it looks like it will be less cluttered, but I loved the waterfall.
So then Wyland will turn into DVC sales?
Typo. I guess all the talk of trader joes lately got to my spell predictor. It's actually Trader Sam's. Trader Joe's is a grocery chain.
As for the artwork, I come from a completely different angle, someone that has never visited the resort. Personally, I think it looks very nice and has a very polynesian feel. If what they've done at Aulani or Trader Sam's is any indication, I think people will be pleasantly surprised by the end product. As for the new Poly Trader Sam's, anyone else wanna bet it becomes the hangout for all the WDW fanbois/podcasters/bloggers? I can picture Louie holding court there on a regular basis...all comp'd by Disney of course.
Compared to the concept art... It's dark and cramped.Dark and Cramped? Welcome to the Poly-Mart Resort. A once majestic resort designed by the men and woman of Disney nobility who had more creativity in their pinky fingers than the current group has combined, gets Wal-Marted.
By the sound of it, you people have never seen concept art before.
Keep in mind this is all concept and nothing is final, but it is a rough idea of the result. Even the concept art for Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar is off - the final result has pretty noticeable changes! Also, you can't think that the lobby will be neon like the art shows. The artwork isn't photorealistic with a bright color palette that would kill your eyes in real life. Its meant to look brighter because it was created that way. I think realistically it will still be much darker and easier on the eyes.
As for Sam's, I wonder if the left person sitting at the bar was just a poor rendering - it certainly does look like a kid! But unless the laws in Florida are vastly different (they aren't), Disney isn't going to allow a minor to sit at the bar. Judging by the hairstyles you'd think its 1950, but it certainly isn't going to be that minor-friendly.
I find it particularly interesting that the bar looks as though it will be more nautically-inspired. The shelfs are also littered with tiki totems, when in actuality it will probably contain much much less of them. On shelves you'll probably end up seeing purchasable mugs, more booze bottles, and a variety of non-purchasable tchotchkes. And for those inquiring whether or not its going to be an interactive experience...honestly, what do you think? That Disney would skimp on that factor?
@Bocabear I wouldn't count out your craft cocktails just yet! Have faith about this one!
Yes, an update or a new variation on the old feature would've been much more welcome. I wish they were less focused on vacation club expansion as the way to "plus" a resort instead of actual upgrades.Having just stayed at the Poly last August I thought it was in need of a "newer look". Many experts were saying the water feature was a nightmare to maintain and needed to go. I was ok with that but expected a fresh interpretation of the water feature. I imagined a water feature you could walk through, with small bridges and pathways over streams and by the falls. I've seen something similar to this in other hotel lobbies and dreamed of a Disney version. A Tiki standing in a bird bath was definitely NOT what I imagined - a big letdown.
Yes I know. I felt it necessary to include any and all who may have helped in building it so some yahoo wouldn't feel the need to be nitpicky, guess I failed. I should work for Disney and design resort lobbysActually it was designed by Welton Becket, as was the Contemporary.
That's the best news I've heard all day. Hopefully it will keep the lifestylers away. The grotto is not a bar like the Trader Sam's out west. It is a family friendly version of the Trader Sam's bar so there will be things for kids to order and it sounds like an area for kids to sit up at the counter.
The Disney PR bots will be in full swing soon to help change the tune of the conversation. Either that, or they will just start deleting comments. It is good to see everybody uniting though. So amazing that Disney/Poly fans everywhere are uniting on this issue.

This is such an outrage. I mean it's not like they're removing the promotional wand, or doing away with the Mickey Mouse /Leopold Stokowski statue in the Contemporary, NO, they're now hitting us where we live! A subtle attraction that requires no lines, no fastpass, no nothing... yet has had the appreciation and love of generations and generations of Disney goers. Incredible fail.
