@tikiman was it ever known as "Disneys Polynesian Village Resort"?

I know they dropped the village around the time they added the Disney, but can't recall if that happened at the same time. Thanks

Well, I will miss the lush water feature, BUT I am VERY happy to see the name changed back to Polynesian VILLAGE!!!!
At least the grounds will still remain lush and outside the front entrance of the lobby will still have water.

Also on a positive note, the lobby will STILL have a water features. Greatly downsized sure, but still there will be a water feature. In the end I am happy.

I am sure the lobby will still smell amazing too.

When in 2015?

As Tikiman can tell you, and as I know from visits starting in the 1970's, the Poly lobby and entrance have changed several times over the years. This is just another change but boy people hate change

No, people hate change they don't see as an improvement. If you convinced them this was BETTER... the majority would buy in. But they are failing to convince people where the improvement is.

The "Disney's" part was shoehorned into most if not all the resorts in the late 90's. It was when they really started dumbing things down as if people didn't know where they were. It was the Polynesian Village and then the Polynesian Resort. Then compartmentalizing and possessing atractions with in the Parks. Mickeys this, Stitches that... Blah, blah, blah starring yada yada...

By the sound of it, you people have never seen concept art before.

Keep in mind this is all concept and nothing is final, but it is a rough idea of the result. Even the concept art for Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar is off - the final result has pretty noticeable changes! Also, you can't think that the lobby will be neon like the art shows. The artwork isn't photorealistic with a bright color palette that would kill your eyes in real life. Its meant to look brighter because it was created that way. I think realistically it will still be much darker and easier on the eyes...

Sure I have. Plenty of it. Even drew up some. ;)

Of course it won't be so neon. It's meant to "pop" so it looks good. By bright, I'm not talking about the plants and Hawaiian shirts. I'm talking about the lighting for example. Both incandescent and natural - which seems to stream in from the windows and above. Also "bright" in the open feel - as opposed to the "dark" of the current water feature which isn't lit as well as it could/should be (IMO) and the fact that, you know, it's primarily grey rock...

The outside water features probably have the same shelf life as anything there...an exec will decide they need a new "Event Lawn" and out it will come like the awesome water features at the Disneyland Hotel... This is the first in probably many value engineered simplifications of this resort......we got the old name back BFD...we have a new Hilton with the name Polynesian Village.

I added my letter to the DPB as well. It's "awaiting moderation" and probably won't see the light of day.

So here it is!

Disney, please listen to your fanbase- please listen to us.
The lobby is the welcoming center of the resort and the "welcome home" to returning families. The waterfall is the staple of this lobby. The loss of the water feature is devastating to the Polynesian Resort.
The updated and 'contemporary' look of the new artwork is not a look for this resort. I understand you're going for open and modern but this space has always been, and has obviously been designed to be a more intimate and close space. Why change it?
I also understand that maintaining a running water feature costs money. However, with rooms going from $400 to $1200 a night (and the new DVC will bring in boatloads of money via points bought) I think it's unreasonable to 'cut' this feature due to costs. People are clearly paying a lot of money to enjoy this lobby... so why take it away?
I hope the backlash that this post is getting will garner some attention of the higher ups in the Disney corporate headquarters and someone takes a good hard look at this redesign issue.
Please reconsider. While adding Trader Sam's seems nice, we are losing both the arcade and Wyland Galleries- and the main feature of the lobby itself. How much more do we have to lose before we move on to stay at other (and less expensive) resorts, or worse for you- offsite?
:(

They seem to be letting 'negative' comments onto the blog about this, not that it will likely matter (unfortunately, and based on their history of doing what they want). It's nice to see the unity on that issue. I have no problem with most of the new design, but the water feature needs to stay.

They didn't "help" in building it, they designed the resort.

Ill say this. The Polynesian was designed during a different era. People still dressed up to get on a plane, hand written correspondence was appreciated, meeting face to face and shaking hands for business still meant something, people tipped the mail man on holidays, businesses actually listened to customers rather than soley rely on computer based analytics to decide everything from budgets to what color the bathroom walls should be. Many more people took pride in what they did. So yes, even the construction workers played a part in making it what it was/is. Efficiency and cost cutting took a back seat to QUALITY for Walt and thats what separated him from every other tom dick and harry with a vision.

7DMT is a good example. It's a nice coaster, but let the imagineers of the 70's build that coaster. They would have made it ten times more magical and they didn't need super computers and 100 million dollars and it would have been built in half the time. Like @sublimesting mentioned in his letter, we are seeing too much of this new mentality in life in general. Changing for change sake. Leave it alone, or just maintain it. Stop ruining the magic, TDO, just to save a few bucks on maintenance.

I realize that this is just concept art and that the finished product may be far different, but given this limited first glance I think it looks like a Pier 1 store, rather than a tropical resort.
Horribly generic. No character. One of the worst thought out "renovations" that I can think of. This decision is just universally disliked by almost everyone......

Disney listened and responded when the changes were announced for MSB Starbucks conversion, and everyone addressed their concerns. I hope they hear us now. If the bottom line is $$ and decisions based on corporate desires, and not guest enjoyment, then there is no hope forfuture decision making in the creative dept.

It reminds me of an airport lobby. To quote General Zod, "Scruffy. So morbid. A sentimental replica of a lobby long since vanished. No style at all." All kidding aside, this is without a doubt THE DUMBEST decision they've ever made.
