News Paradise Pier Becoming Pixar Pier

I don’t understand the “Paradise Pier wasn’t good to begin with” argument. When something isn’t good, you work to improve it, not worsen it.

If I may expand on this...

The thing with Paradise Pier is that was disappointing.

It was stuck between its original contemporary rendition and its bygone era template — it looked fine from far away but is wildly inconsistent up close with decent stuff mixed in with unthemed areas and some half-finished place making. From its inception, Paradise Pier didn’t aspire to much and did just an okay job of reaching that low goal. By 2012 they upgraded the execution a bit to be better at reaching that low bar. I think many hoped if they kept the low aspirations they’d at least keep improving the execution over time. Instead they decided to change the area’s aspirations, but not really change its execution. The effectiveness of the area kind of depended on the fact that it didn’t try to be much. Changing what the area is trying to do resets expectations

If Pixar Pier’s new aspirations are to effectively represent Pixar characters in the park, it does poor job at reaching them. It also somewhat impedes on the execution of Paradise Pier’s old goal of being a romanticized amusement park. Lose-lose. This is how a place that overall didn’t really change that much can suddenly be more disappointing. It may be minor in a sense but overall it’s a bunch of mental gymanstics and friction from the company that is supposed to be about the architecture of reassurance and seamlessly transporting your mental state.

Paradise Pier has always been problematic and needed a major overhaul but placing Pixar props and glossy primary color paint jobs was not the best way to go about addressing those problems.

Yes, they spent millions that they will not see a return on.
You're not getting as much money if they're APs, that's the point.
They may not be getting as much, but they're getting moneyyyyyyyyy. With all those people, disney must be getting their profit back, even if it's slowly.

By all means I'm glad Disneyland is getting something impressive, but it's going to be an absolute cannonball to their broad side next year.

And DCA won't benefit? I can't see how SW:GE doesn't drive attendance at DCA next year.

Marvel and Star Wars' fanbases overlap quite a bit. But more importantly, if anyone is coming out of the state to visit Disneyland, they'll likely do more than one day and will get parkhoppers. That's just how out-of-towners operate. Not to mention if Disneyland is at capacity those who came will stop by DCA.

Maybe if Marvel land was opening in 2019, but honestly I would not be surprised if the Star Wars superfans don’t buy park hoppers and spend little to no time in DCA.

I suspect many people who come to the resort solely to see SW:GE won’t even be remotely interested in DCA.

Well that's always been true, but I would imagine the vast majority of people coming to DLR are visiting both parks. Has there ever been a year when DL had a sizable attendance increase and DCA declined?

Has there ever been an expansion of the scope and scale of Galaxy’s Edge? This will bring in an entire demographic of people who probably couldn’t care less about the rest of Disneyland, let alone DCA.

Of course, attendance between the parks is correlated, but I think SWL will only further the attendance gap between the parks (ie it will undress but DL’s will increase substantially more).
