News Paradise Pier Becoming Pixar Pier

They're removing Mickey's facet from the fun wheel aren't they?

Mickey's still there in the concept art, which is weird since he's not the least bit Pixar-y.

Maybe is it just me But I think that Disney is Pushing too Much Pixar all over the world, I get that Disney has a lot of IP’s, But Parks has more Pixar Properties throughout the parks and other properties, and I feel like Other Disney content aren’t getting the much Push That they deserved. There are some Classics Like Fantasia,Hercules and so on that needs some more recognition that it needs.

I think some of that is tied into the slow moving nature of the parks. It was not that long ago that really the only viable new franchises worth a darn were Pixar.

Looking at the actual project breakdown over the last few and next few years - DLR is going to see way more live action franchise investment. WDW has a steady mix between Pixar (Toy Story Land, Rat, ?Coco), Lucasfilm, Marvel and even a non-princess Disney live action film (Tron). Not to mention how preferentially skewed WDW has been to WDAS with Frozen and all of new fantasyland.

Tokyo is being Pixar heavy, with a beauty and the beast reprieve. Hong Kong is actually going to be less Pixar heavy unbelievably with the loss of Buzz (unless TSMM is hiding secretly in the wings, which I still believe). Shanghai is equivocal as it’s only true representation is Toy Story.

We’ll never see the classics rear representation under Iger. Snow White is a miracle. There are far more popular reinessance films (Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin) that are criminally under-represented at DLR.

But yes, if they could maybe put Toy Story and Mermaid to bed for a while from future plans - that would be nice. Even if we don’t get a Cinderella ride.

This is exactly the business strategy that really tests my Disney fanaticism. Ugh. Does literally EVERYTHING have to be a vehicle for profit at Disney P&R? I hope guests reject this nonsense and let the shirts collect dust on the racks. I'm trying to be a nicer person in 2018, but if I saw someone wearing either one of those in the parks I'd be struggling hard not to roll my eyes.

The Santa Cruz Boardwalk has an enclosed carousel (with a functioning reach-out-and-grab-the-ring game!), but it's designed with wide views to the outside on two of its four walls. If DCA's will be more enclosed than that, they could spice up the ride with projections-- Like Willy Wonka's freak-out boat tunnel.

I wish they'd enclose the carousel in a building similar to Santa Monica's. Something about that rickety old building makes it the seasidiest of all seaside carousels. Could still utilize the Little Mermaid theme in there too.

How did anyone get the idea Pixar Pier is supposed to be a Toy Story Land lateral makeover? It’s not. It’s a theming makeover from California generic pier to Pixar.

Point me to where someone claimed that. Also explain to me how the new theme is Pixar. You don't understand a smidgen of themed entertainment and I'm not sure why you continuously choose to let us all know.

Maybe I missed it but what is happening with the Jumping Jellyfish? Is it getting a makeover -Army Men? Or will it be not be counted as part of Pixar Pier?

That area of the Pier isn't getting touched. Pixar Pier basically extends from the western entrance and Cove Bar to everything that sits within the Screamin' footprint. Once you leave the Screamin' track and walk out to Silly Symphony Swings, all that area stays exactly the same. Jumpin' Jellyfish and Golden Zephyr are the last two original rides that haven't been touched in either the big Pier makeover of 2010-11 or the Pixar Pier makeoever of 2018.

I quoted you saying there’s no logic to Pixar Pier. That suggests YOU think the theming should makes sense like Toy Story Land. You don’t understand why the pier is not a full fledged theming. It isn’t because it will never be. It’s nice for egg and everyone here to insist it should be what it will never be.

I went for a farewell stroll through Paradise Pier yesterday evening. I wanted to avoid the big AP crowds today, but DCA was already packed yesterday too.

While Pixar Pier as it has been explained thus far is a weak concept, I can't get too worked up over it yet because existing Paradise Pier is even weaker. The current Pier has fits and starts of really good Imagineering with all the new stuff added or massively upgraded since 2001, mainly around the Midway Mania complex.

But then the Pier has abrupt breaks into cheap Paul Pressler standards in areas that have only had new paint applied since 2001; Ariel's Grotto & Cove Bar, all the shops, the entire California Screamin' queue, loading area, and onboard experience, the Carousel, the Fun Wheel entry and queue, etc. It's a disjointed land with some glaring 2001 cop-outs still on vivid display.

10 years ago I would have been ready to condemn this plan, only because I was still scarred from the 1997-2003 Paul Pressler and Cynthia Harriss era of very cheap theme park operations. But in 2018, after over five years of being wowed by the big budgets and end results Imagineering achieves with them in things like Cars Land, Buena Vista Street, Guardians of the Galaxy, new Rivers of America, etc. the battle scars of the Pressler era have healed and I am ready to give them the benefit of the doubt.

The entire California Screamin experience from cement queue to the stucco station to the onboard non-effects are rather dismal, even though the ride itself is fun. I'm willing to wait and see what they come up with for this big E Ticket, and if they can give it a real show then I think Pixar Pier will be a huge improvement for the area and DCA as a whole.

Thanks for the memories Paul Pressler!

And it's now been proven that many Pixar executives and their Imagineer buddies are drunk most of the time, so I could care less what they do or don't put into the vague aerial view concept art. They're drunk.

I'm really, really hoping that area gets touched in the future, pixar ip or otherwise. It's the area I think needs the most work in all of dca. Put some dark rides there and a new e-ticket and I will be happy.

But even if the area is better after than it is now, doesn't it annoy you that they are going this route when they could have put money into it and made it much better than it is now AND what it will be as Pixar Pier?
