News Paradise Pier Becoming Pixar Pier

I know... when we were there a few weeks ago, the only thing my son truly wanted was a chance to meet Gustav and have his photo taken with him. He was absolutely devastated to learn of Pixar Pier coming in.

Same here. So I just asked that guy in front of me in line for a Turkey leg if he could pretend to be Gustav and take a pic with my kid. He was a real sport about it. Dude made a great Gustav.

I wasn’t making any commentary if it’s good or bad. You mentioned that this isn’t anything new and brought up how this was done decades ago. I responded by saying we live in a different time now where attention spans are far shorter and going to the movies for 4 hours isn’t really a thing anymore.

I really don’t care personally but your suggestion doesn’t make a lot of sense. A casual fan wouldn’t even know that their would be a 20 minute short before the movie.

Unless you've been under a rock for the last 6 months you knew that the Frozen short was going to accompany Coco. It was advertised all over the place, including in previews for other movies a couple months prior. I don't remember which movie I saw, but back in like September there was a preview for Coco stating that Frozen short was going to be shown before it. So unless they ignored it or haven't been to a movie in months, they should have known. Like I said, this is a perfect example of a population being less informed with more access to information.

Nowhere did you mention the length. Which what we are discussing. The question is- was the length known to the average movie goer? I would imagine the answer is NO for the large majority.

Thank you! His name was on the tip of my tongue. That was exciting times for Paradise Pier.

I'm more inclined to believe that this backstory is going away but it doesn't have to necessarily. It makes just as little sense for him to be the owner of a Pier filled with Pixar characters than one with Disney characters.

I did like that they were using the Pier to subtlety suggest backstories of immigrants coming to California and starting businesses. The other one being the Italian family who owns Garden Grill and Boardwalk Pizza and Pasta.

It simply wasn't a fully fleshed out idea.

But lets be realistic here, Coco is 1hr 49 mins (if you sit through all credits which are about 5-7 mins, and most people don't). Frozen short is 21 mins. That only is 2hrs 10mins movie total time (2hrs 3-5 mins if you don't stay for all credits). Which is about average for a movie today, even a kids movie. So really what are we discussing (complaining about)? If its length, it really didn't increase the overall time that much given today's movie length. Its people just complaining to complain.

You forgot about 10-15 minutes of previews but I see your point. I think it’s more about expectations and not about the total length of the event combined. People are accustomed to a 5 minute short. After all, it’s a SHORT. Maybe if the short were more entertaining, fewer people would be complaining. Of course this is getting way blown out of proportion now which happens here a lot. Where we become more focused on arguing our point than we actually care about we re taking about. I swear, I really don’t care.

Tinker couldn't pay the property tax on his pier anymore so he had to sell half of it to the corporate overlords at Pixar.

You're forgetting the 20 minutes of previews. So in all it's two and a half hours, an hour longer than most kids movies which clock in around 90 minutes.

I wasn't forgetting the previews, I left them out since everytime I go to the movies I'm usually one of only a handful that actually show up before the previews. I find most people show up 10-15 mins after the scheduled start specifically to miss the previews.

Also we here and the media have been calling it a short, Disney calls it a featurette and was in all the ads and previews. Which by definition is longer than a short, approx 24-40 mins in length.

I like previews.

Well whatever they re calling it I doubt many people were expecting it to be 20 minutes.

I like previews as well, which is why I show up early to watch them.

I think its an important distinction, so call something a short its one expectation. But to call it a featurette, as Disney did, then its not a short and should not be expected to be. So those that were expecting a 5 min short were incorrect in their expectation. Disney provided all the information on what it was, a featurette.

The expectations can only be different if one understands what the difference between a short and a featurette are. I would imagine most people think “featurette” is a cute way of saying short. I personally didn’t know the difference when you mentioned it or that the word existed. “Ette” does imply short as well. Even in this case it means a short feature. I don’t think most people do this sort of cognizant thinking before a movie. They may have heard there is some sort of short/ featurette before the movie so they go in with the expectations of what they have experienced the last 20 years when they saw a Disney/ Pixar animated film - a pre show that is NOT 20+ minutes long.

I really think this is much ado about nothing.

Just know that it was reported and even stated in Cosmo of all places that it was a featurette and 21 mins long.

So its not like the information wasn't out there. I'm sure other publications also reported the same thing.

I guess if people want to complain because they got a longer offering than they were expecting, well you know first world problems. But I can understand if someone was expecting 5 mins and got 21 mins of a "short" being upset, I'd demand my money back too.

Hahah definitely first world problems. Are you joking about demanding your money back? That seems a little extreme.

Of course I'm joking, but it shows how ridiculous this is.... Please complain over the weirdest most unimportant things.

That’s kind of what we do here. If there is no big news we find random things to talk about. When anyone in real life asks me how Coco was I tell them that the movie was good and I wished there was more music. Haven’t mentioned the short at all. Basically, when we re here on this site we are amongst our peers that scrutinize / analyze all things Disney- good or bad. That’s the point of a forum like this.
