"Own" a "Piece" of Disney

Some may consider this sacrilege, some crass marketing, some just more of that stupid pin stuff, but I think this is a really neat idea, even for those that don't "do pins"

As part of the 50th Anniversary, WDW will be offering limited edition pins each month with a "piece" of an attraction. See below for the details:

PIECE OF DISNEY HISTORY - 2005 PIN COLLECTION

In 2005, the Piece of Disney History Pin Collection will debut at the Walt Disney World® Resort. This pin collection will celebrate Disney Attractions and let Guests take a piece of Disney history home with them.

Working with the Engineering Services teams around the Walt Disney World® Resort, the Disney Pin Team was able to obtain actual pieces of Disney Attractions, some of which have been retired. In turn, the Pin Team partnered with the manufacturer to add pieces of those Disney Attractions to the pins.

"Attractions are an important part of a Disney vacation," said Julie Young, Product Developer for Disney Pin Trading. "With the Happiest Celebration on Earth just around the corner, I thought this would be a great way for our Guests to remember their favorite attractions."

A variety of Attractions will be featured in this collection from all four Theme Parks, including Maelstrom at Norway Pavilion in Epcot®, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at the Disney-MGM Studios, Swiss Family Treehouse at the Magic Kingdom® Park, and many more.

"I was really inspired by the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea porthole," continued Julie. "After seeing [the porthole], I wanted to find a way to get a piece of that classic attraction into the hands of many Guests. This pin collection was the result."

A new pin will be released each month throughout 2005 and each pin will have an edition size of 2500. Check back soon for a confirmed release date of the first pin (most likely, the latter part of January).

For the first time, the Disney Pin Team is offering a sneak preview into the creation of these special pins. Each month, this page will highlight the manufacturing process - from the first cut to the final pin sample. Below you will find the creation of the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea pin, the first pin in this collection.

Here's my idea. How about all the WDWmagic members out there buy up all the 20K Leagues pins, and then we can piece the attraction back together in my backyard. This way, we'd be supporting Disney while bringing back to life that once great ride.

I have never really cared for these “piece” of something collectables. While owning a porthole from one of the 20k subs would be pretty neat having a 1/8” cube of brass that is suppose to be cut from a 20k sub porthole just doesn’t thrill me.

I like the idea as well!! I'm sure that they will get snatched up in record time, especially the ones honoring the extinct attractions.

Brilliant marketing ploy!

Wow, that is really neat. Too bad I'll probably have to end up getting them overpriced on eBay since I'm going this weekend and won't be back for a few months. I only collect pins that "mean" something to me, i.e. an attraction I like or a place I stayed, and these types of pins would definately qualify.

I'd like one of 20k myself, hope to be able to purchase one. A few other attraction pins i'd like to own would be haunted masion, pirates, small world, tki birds, jungle cruise, sky ride, old space mountian cars,Walt dinsey railroad, momorail, even a small peice of the castle would be highly sought pin, some are ideas from old rides others from rehabed rides those would be really great pins. Oh well just a few of pins i'd go after,i'd probally have a few more come to me later.

seems ill probably have to buy these on eBay, I'm going in Feb. but from the 20-25 if they are as popular as I think they are going to be 2500 will be gone by then (unless they dont release them in the beginning of the month) I would really like 20,000K but that'll be gone by then. I wonder what the next attraction is going to be. I really think they should do this all the time with retired attractions to have a peice of Mr Toads wild ride, or of the original Journey into imagination.. haha

I think that's really cool. I just totally forsee it being something that gets stupidly overpriced and expensive and therefore impossible for the average collector to get. Which stinks. I don't have thousands of pins nor the money for thousands. I get pins I like. Just so happens that often the pins I'd like the most are the ones that are least possible to obtain.

So while I think it's cool, the odds of me being able to get any will probably be slim-to-none. :(

What's next? Edible pins designed after your favorite WDW treats? If so, I will order every single Dole Whip pin available. Don't get in my way.
