PROGRESS ISLE

A massive new Disney destination, Progress Isle is an adaption of Walt Disney’s original experimental prototype community of tomorrow; separated from the rest of the complex world by the vast ocean, this is the perfect place to make Walt's dreams of tomorrow a reality, with a number of real citizens (paying real taxes to Disney hence how they have income to build it) living in the utopia and every week cruise tourists entering to visit the international malls and renowned attractions.

Guests arrive at this private island to see only dense jungle all around them but the fun is once they enter deeper into the island to see that it is really themed to Tarzan complete with character meet and greets and all and I know it seems crazy to have the island-themed to a film that hasn't even come out yet (released just under a year after the maiden voyage due to ship delays), but it would just be before the marketing really kicked off for the film anyways!

Kermit Island

Sailing for adventure on the Big Blue Wet Things brings guests to the one and only Kermit Island, a fun-filled, zany escapade as the Muppets try to run their own "resort", the island actually owned by Scooter's uncle, where guests can visit the rundown Happiness Hotel, Benjamina Gunn pig spa, a pirate shantytown ran by Long John Silver, and Kermit's own swampy splash zone!

Acting as a "theme park" for guests on the Disney Cruise, Destination Disney hosts a variety of activities, from a train-ride around the island (like Disneyland), a jungle-themed splash ride (like the Jungle Cruise), and a Skyway transportation system to move guests around the park; the best part of the island is the main icon, an old lighthouse perched atop rocks that at night is host to The Ocean in the Sky, a firework show themed to the beauty of water.

STORYTELLING STOWAWAY
20200109_065002.jpg

With the only main thematic components to the cruise at this point in history being musicals, with castaway cay being an island themed island, the idea is that the island would be based off storytelling which was another huge component of the company in the 90's and a big part of the company's image, leading to the creation of Disney's Imagination Island, showing how you can use storytelling in your daily lives, which is located off the Pearl islands of Panama, with the canonical backstory behind the resort being that locals had discovered that the power of storytelling was a thing and would use it in their everyday lives, but, the Adventurers Club came and realized the same, and when they settled started to use storytelling as well, but, then it started to muddle reality and what it is, some saying they can see a ginger man on a steampunk machine flying above..

For a change of pace, I’ll be reviewing in reverse order tonight.

Storytelling Stowaway
@Tux

The champion of run-on sentences strikes again! Within this James Joyce-esque wallop of text, there’s a nice nugget of an idea about using storytelling as the island’s theme. It fits the company’s late-90s style (see Disneyland Resort’s Storyteller Café a few years later), and it brings in the era-appropriate fan favorite Adventurer’s Club. Additional S.E.A. connections would have been very welcome! Giving a real world location a made-up backstory – nice specificity selecting Panama – is something Disney would do. A minor steampunk reference at the end suggests the island’s visual style, which is good since “storytelling” is a rather broad theme.

@MickeyMousketeer

Castaway Cay has always seemed a little underwhelming as a “Disney Destination,” as it’s just an island-themed island (as @Tux said) – hence the reason for this challenge. By making a full-on island theme park, you’ve certainly made a much more vacation-worthly paradise…that’s just a tad unrealistic. Theme park infrastructure for a private island that will see only intermittent cruise ship traffic? This is a pretty huge cash investment, likely the same amount as a cruise ship itself (i.e. in the billions). But taken simply as a park idea, in a better location, I do like it – especially the lighthouse icon and its fireworks show.

@Evilgidgit

So @AceAstro neglects his beloved Muppets, then the next guy swoops in and uses them anyway!

Just when cruise passengers are catching cabin fever…

…they arrive at a resort run by Muppets! Shiver my timbers! What a fantastic idea! It seems reasonably realistic while remaining imaginative. It’s almost like a parody of your typical cruise resort, just with a bit more zany Muppetiness added to the standard tropical theming. A few cast member puppeteers, that’s all you’d need to make this work really. Plus, Muppets make everything better. And the Muppet Treasure Island tie-in fits the era nicely.

@AceAstro

Like @Evilgidgit, here’s another ‘90s IP which builds on the tropical island setting. It wouldn’t take too much to add character overlays to the existing jungle and create an imaginative Tarzan experience. A solid, frill-free concept, very fun.

As for Tarzan not being released yet…don’t worry! Disney does this all the time. Sleeping Beauty Castle over at Disneyland predates its movie by several years.

@Outbound

This is my favorite interpretation of this challenge. Using the Disney Cruise Line as a secret backdoor to create an actual working Epcot Progress City! Brilliant…and evil! This is the sort of thing a Bond villain would do. (Or the Galactic Empire.)

Of course your big idea – build an entire city – is not especially 100% realistic. Would Disney be creating their own island nation?! With U.N. recognition? Treaties & embargoes? Is world domination on the table? The cruise line element seems almost like an afterthought, but honestly I love the crazy ambition of this idea too much to fault you for dreaming big…

Disney’s imagineer Island focuses on the more tropical & prepared side of island life as if the cruise never stopped, as if you were still with Mickey & friends past the end of your voyage in this surprisingly fancy, surprisingly artsy island.View attachment 439942
Disney’s Imagineer Island
@Disneypugs.

This description (“more tropical & prepared side of island life”) sounds very similar to Castaway Cay. I mean, it basically IS Castaway Cay! Typical tropical resort, with just a smattering of Mickey & Pals to distinguish it.

You always go first and fast, and you always include lovely personal artwork. These are wonderful things, but often it means you don’t have a chance to build on other players’ ideas. Dream bigger! I would suggest waiting a little longer in Challenge 6. Give your ideas time to grow.

Challenge 5 results!

I wasn’t sure how this challenge would play out (cruise line challenges are always weird), and once again I am impressed by the creativity our players bring to the table. There were fewer proposals this time, maybe because cruises are dumb, and maybe because everyone’s getting ramped up for Sorcerer’s Apprentice. That’s awesome! One Sentence Competition will play out its final 3 rounds anyway. It’s already served its purpose – being an appetizer for SA6.

Very detailed and realistic. I especially like the Adventurer's Club connection.

At long last Walt’s greatest dream becomes a reality!

(I’m not sucking up to the SA6 host, I swear!)

Cheers to everyone who contributed! Challenge 6 will appear at noon (EST) tomorrow.

CHALLENGE 6
2000s

enhance

Tokyo DisneySea opened in September of 2001, becoming one of the greatest achievements in Imagineering history. Several immersive nautically-themed lands featured upon opening, such as Mediterranean Harbor, Mysterious Island, American Waterfront, Port Discovery, Lost River Delta, Arabian Coast, and Mermaid Lagoon.

Your task is to propose one alternate port-of-call (land) for Tokyo DisneySea’s opening day, 2001. (This port-of-call can replace any of DisneySea’s existing lands.)

-Rules-
Use only a single sentence to describe your idea. You may also use one image if you wish, that is optional. The deadline is Tuesday, January 14th, 2020, at midnight EST.

-Tips-
K.I.S.S. – Keep It Simple, Silly! We are officially back to one sentence, so don’t overcomplicate things. Think of this like an initial brainstorming session.

-Judging Criteria-
Is it creative?
Is it realistic?
Does it fit thematically/visually?

Good luck everyone! Have fun! Go create!

Olympia Harbour
(Replacing Lost River Delta)

Marked by the Colossus of Rhodes, the Greco-Roman mythical port of Olympia Harbour is home to Greek heroes, gods, legends, and monsters, feat. a Pirates-sized Odyssey indoor boat ride, a suspended dark ride based on Hercules, a thriving agora market, an explorable replica of the Argo, a mythical beast spinner, a Greek amphitheatre where the Muses perform, and a TS restaurant within Dionysus' temple.

PIRATE'S PORT OF CALL
1578781287966.png

In order to contrast with the Mermaid Lagoon based land, we have Pirate's Port of Call using the expansion space meant for the expansion port, the land will receive a revolutionary shooting gallery based e-ticket dark ride based on the shootouts between pirate and navy ships, with points being counted for the amount of treasure you get which you can earn by shooting at valuables or Mariners, along with a Mediterranean restaurant themed to Mariner based urban legends and folklore, a clone of the Pirates League, and finally a museum shop dedicated to the lives and history of pirates, although it would later receive a clone of the shanghai version of Pirates in 2022, which resulted in the pirates league closing and our first dark ride having it's track shortened so the building would fit.

I'm probably overthinking this, but how would the land get the Shanghai Pirates ride if Tokyo Disneysea opened in 2001, two years prior to the first POTC film? Unless you mean it would be added in at a later date.

Atlantis

In what Disney hopes to be the next big movie, Tokyo Disney Sea opens with a Port of Atlantis based around the movie that released a few months earlier; this Port of Call will open with a walk-through attraction showcasing Altlantian history though the years in big works of art and displays leading into the Ports gift shop where you can purchase Atlantian goods, as well as a "submarine" indoor coaster based on the underwater leviathan attack, and a shooter ride not dissimilar to Buzz Lightyears Astro Blasters where guests board Kataks (fish shaped war vessels) in order to protect Atlantis from invasion.

Daimyō Village

A traditional Japanese fishing town, Daimyō Village takes guests back to a simpler time: of traditions, noble samurai, and the feudal lords called the Daimyō; this will replace the Lost River Delta due to potential similarities with Disneyland's Adventureland and feature two attractions: a trackless dark ride telling a young fishermen's ascent to ninja and later samurai (utilizing the just-invented trackless stealth to its advantage), and an expansive roller coaster where you ride the much-beloved Japanese dragons across Mount Fuji.

A heads up, we are now back to one sentence only (no three sentences). I suggest editing the post with semicolons to make that happen.
