THE INDIANA JONES ADVENTURE!

With Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade releasing at the end of the month, now is the perfect time to capitalize on hype: right next to the upcoming Stunt Spectacular, the Indiana Jones Adventure is a themed launched wild-mouse coaster taking you through a no-spoilers adaption of the circus train scene: in a 1910's car weave your way around frantic giraffes, escape hungry lions, encounter deadly snakes, and maybe use a little magic - all while being chased by greedy bandits!

Using some of the unused space surrounding...the TMNT M&G.., the opening day of MGM Studios sees the opening of Premiere Quest, a fast paced slot car ride involving driving through the scenic views of California in order to reach a movie premiere in which you, the guest, had starred in, which leads to meeting stars along the way and interrupting sets by accident, until you finally make it to the premiere, which unfortunately gets interrupted by crowds of obsessive, diehard fans causing you to take a wild ride trying to escape, which leads to you appearing to crash into the 'gift shop' (actually just a fake replica), passing out (the ride transitions to pure darkness after you 'crash' into the fake gift shop), and ‘waking up in’ [entering] the real gift shop.

Adventure of the Great Mouse Detective
Great-Mouse-Detective-Clock-Scene.jpg

Similar to the intentions of designing an E-ticket attraction around a specific animated IP Song of the South in July of 1989 at Disneyland, Imagineers decided to go all on on their box-office success of The Great Mouse Detective to open Disney-MGM Studios, which would serve as the E-ticket anchor for Animation Courtyard, encompassing a first of its kind dark ride "coaster," with the first half of the attraction following Basil, and the second half trying to escape from Ratigan himself.

Ghostbusters Escape!

During early drafts of the Great Movie Ride, there was going to be a Ghostbusters section but through various issues (Bill Murray being complicated about his face and Universal then swooped in with a stage show to get the rights), Disney lost the rights to Ghostbusters; but with a full attraction, where guests board an open-top ECTO-1 to get through the streets of NY after all the ghosts are released into the streets before coming face-to-face with the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, is the perfect way to get the rights for Ghostbusters while also offering the perfect transition from Star Tours to the Streets of America (since Muppets was still not confirmed).

Superstar Limo should be built in MGM-Studios on opening day except with an art style that can't be describe as "nightmares in a concentrated form" and jokes that aren't dumb as rocks and also the budget isn't $7.53; enjoy a tour around a parody of Hollywood full of in-joke; parodies; a mix of real life, fictional, and animated celebrities; and the houses of famous fictional characters like Mickey Mouse (Knowing they were building this, Toontown Fair (built in 1988) doesn't include character houses).

Animation Adventure

Take a journey through the animation process in this opening day ride, narrated by the amazing Ub Iwerks shortly before his death, as you go from simple black and white sketch to the final animation; the simplicity of a slow moving ride upgraded by the impressive set design going from very flat two dimension screens showing the sketch work to a fully immersive set with plenty of set pieces and colours to showcase the layers of a finished animation.

Toontown Expressway
Going in the Echo Lake area and loosely based on Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Toontown Expressway is a high-speed roller coaster that takes guests through a cartoon city, encountering many iconic characters and going through many turns and loops to see the other side of the city.
Toontown Expressway
@FireMountain

One of the trickier things about 1989 Disney-MGM Studios – as opposed to today’s Disney Hollywood Studios – is the “Hollywood that never was and always will be” theme, which is more restrictive than “Ride the movies.” Since Roger Rabbit is set in Hollywood, it’s the era’s best IP choice for E-ticket treatment. I like your choice of a roller coaster, which would complement the other opening day offerings nicely…though as always I’m curious about details. Would it be a mine train? A Wild Mouse? A looper?

You’re sorely lacking an image, but I feel this one from Imagineering works perfectly:

Ah, 1989, the year of
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. It’s the only time when it makes any sense to use that Young Indy train sequence as the basis for a headlining roller coaster. Of course Indy was already a major presence at Disney-MGM Studios, so this IP is hugely apt. However, most guests would expect something more archaeological from Dr. Jones, something closer in spirit to the Indiana Jones Adventure which Disneyland got in 1995, so I fear there’d be some complaints down at City Hall over this. (Thanks for specifying the coaster type.)

@Tux

Premiere Quest sounds like the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster premise (more or less) done using Test Track technology. What a fantastic idea! It’s a little early to be using slot car ride tech, but certainly Imagineering could & would develop it sooner for this.

It’s easy to list the little flourishes which make this a great proposal! You’ve specified a location. The gift shop ending is inspired. The homemade layout shows great thought.

Just about my only critique is the name itself. It has a more sci-fi/fantasy vibe, and only from reading your description did the moviemaking connection become clear.

Disney’s Popcorn Panic
@Disneypugs.

I like how your idea directly connects to movies. With riders assuming the role of a snack vendor, this seems more like Fantasyland’s C-ticket dark rides than a true headlining E-ticket. More ride description could clarify that. What sort of dark ride is this? Is it the classic bus bar style like in Fantasyland, or something more groundbreaking like 1995’s Indiana Jones Adventure?

As usual, the custom artwork is much appreciated!

Y’all see what Space is doing here? It’s well known that Ratigan is my spirit animal, so he’s buttering me up. Once again Space is demonstrating smart strategy for others to learn from.

In 1989, the timing was right for “lesser” IPs like this to get the A+ treatment, and I’m all for it. The dark ride/coaster hybrid idea is ahead-of-its-time yet believable. For the coaster section, I’m picturing a glorified Wild Mouse set inside an oversized Big Ben. That’s something I’d very very very much like to experience!

(There’s nothing particularly “Hollywood” about this idea, but I suppose the Animation Courtyard makes it OK.)

Launchpad's Crash Course
launchpad-mcquack.jpg

Life is like a hurricane, here in Duckburg -- located in the Echo Lake area, Launchpad McQuack takes guest on a wild ride around his airfield, in this thrilling, crazy spinning airplane-themed coaster.
Launchpad’s Crash Course
@Evilgidgit

Oy vey, a spinning coaster?! This is just a personal thing, but those make me vomit. (Yet somehow rides like Tatsu don’t.)

A Launchpad airplane coaster sounds like a cute idea for Toontown or Fantasyland. You know, like Goofy’s Barnstormer. At that smaller scale, visible tracks don’t clash as much with the fling simulation. As a large E-ticket, in a premiere Disney park, this would only work if it were set indoors…which isn’t something you’ve specified. Echo Lake isn’t the right place for a cartoon IP; Animation Courtyard is better.

Pee-Wee is unexpected! But so was The Twilight Zone before Tower of Terror. In this park, the IP licensing rules are much looser, so Pee-Wee works.

I would love to know where this is going or what sort of ride it is. You’ve nicely described the guest experience of exploring Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, so I’m very curious about how Imagineers would accomplish that.

Ghostbusters has always felt like an IP which deserved something more than a mere stage show. (Well, I s’pose there’s now a shooter ride in one of those Dubai theme parks, but those places don’t really count.) I like your alternate history describing how Disney was able to retain the rights. This would be spectacular.

As described, this ride feels the closest to a 1989 E-ticket dark ride. The image helps a ton; not sure its origin, but it feels so much like an actual on-ride AA scene. The open-top ECTO-1 – obvious though it is – is the perfect amount of detail to make this ride feel tangible. Would this be a simple scenic ride through? (It’s too early to make this an EMV or a shooter ride.) Lastly, I like how you’ve incorporated the ride into the park’s layout, even if Star Tours wasn’t there yet.

Would it also be faster like they originally planned?

I’m not sure if SSL can be salvaged. It’s the CATS of theme park rides; the concept is deeply, profoundly, fatally, horribly, ridiculously, terribly flawed. Though if I take your joke proposal seriously – and I must – then at the very least the fictional character houses help bring in a scintilla of fantasy to SSL’s dull-as-dishwater premise. (Celebrity navel gazing plays better in Florida, right?)

What beloved 1989 celebrities would appear? Bill Cosby? Kevin Spacey? Harvey Weinstein? Pee-Wee Herman? The list is endless! :p

@gam3rprincess

With Animation Adventure, Disney-MGM Studios officially has its Journey into Imagination!

This is a brilliant fusion of the park’s Tinsel Town theme with the imaginative, transporting joy which Disney is known for. This is a lovely way to visualize the process of animation. I love your word choices. “The simplicity of a slow-moving ride” implying a classic omnimover. You’ve nicely implied a great variety of scenes. The Ub Iwerks inclusion is truly classy. Even the name “Animation Adventure,” while simple, feels exactly like a name Disney would use. This late entry appeals to me on every level! This is a fantastic proposal!

Challenge 4 results!

This could have been a tricky challenge since the original Disney-MGM Studios is so different from today's Hollywood Studios. Some proposals delved into moviemaking, while others seemed designed for a modern studio park. With either approach, I was mostly looking for that grand E-ticket experience…and our winners delivered!

Disney Cruise Line incorporated in 1996 as Magical Cruise Company, representing a bold step beyond resort destinations. Their first cruise aboard Disney’s Magic took place in 1998, ferrying guests to Disney’s private island Castaway Cay in the Caribbean. But what other island destinations could they have featured?

Your task is to propose an original private island for the maiden voyage of Disney's Magic in 1998.

-Rules-
Use only a single sentence to describe your idea. You may also use one image if you wish, that is optional. The deadline is Friday, January 10th, 2020, at midnight EST.

-Tips-
K.I.S.S. – Keep It Simple, Silly! We are officially back to one sentence, so don’t overcomplicate things. Think of this like an initial brainstorming session.

-Judging Criteria-
Is it creative?
Is it realistic?
Does it fit thematically/visually?

Good luck everyone! Have fun! Go create!

Disney’s imagineer Island focuses on the more tropical & prepared side of island life as if the cruise never stopped, as if you were still with Mickey & friends past the end of your voyage in this surprisingly fancy, surprisingly artsy island.
