CHALLENGE 3
MARCH

On March 31st, 1927, Cesar Chavez was born. He went on to become a noted civil rights activist, fighting on behalf of Latino migrant farmers throughout the American southwest. Today, the states which he improved officially honor his life and struggle with –

CESAR CHAVEZ DAY
27470220689_6d42f9180b_o_d.jpg

California’s offices and schools close on Cesar Chavez Day. Disney California Adventure, however, remains open, celebrating the state which Cesar Chavez fought so hard to improve. Similarly, Imagineering continues to improve this once-shameful park. In true Iger style, they’ve done so mostly by adding characters, from the brilliant Cars Land to the recent Marvel takeover of Tower of Terror.

-Challenge-
Create a permanent character overlay similar to MISSION: Breakout or Pixar Pier. You may apply it to any of DCA’s other attractions, shops, restaurants, even an entire land. But take care! Many fans question the thematic appropriateness of DCA’s recent additions, so try to fit the Californian theme.

-Bonus-
Despite your best efforts, DCA grows increasingly less Californian. It’s time for a name change! With one additional sentence, give DCA yet another name. Doing so will net you an automatic extra point!

-Rules-
You may use between 1 and 3 sentences and up to 1 image. The deadline is Monday, January 15th, at midnight EST.

-Tips-
K.I.S.S. – Keep it simple, silly. Try not to complicate or overthink things too much. It’s a simple, casual competition – there are no eliminations. Propose as you please!

-Judging Criteria-
Is it creative?
Is it (generally) realistic?
Does it fit thematically/visually?

Good luck everyone! If you have questions, don’t be afraid to ask. Now go create!

Paradise Falls Raft Run
up-tepui-landing-paradise-falls.jpg

Grizzly Peak has gone from being themed to extreme sports to California's beautiful parks and now to a classic retelling of the hit Pixar movie UP.

The foliage and land begin a slow redevelopment to match the new aesthetics of Paradise Falls, and the wing of the Grand Californian gets repainted to brighter colors.

The rides queue starts in the Pacific Wharf Area, and proceeds until guests are inside of Carl's house where they will watch the pre-show and exit outside of the backdoor to find themselves in Paradise Falls.

BONUS: Disney’s Spirits of California

Ant-Man and the Wasp Replacing 'A Bug's Land'
paul-rudd-ant-man-marvel-studios.jpg

2015's hit film Ant-Man, showed that even smaller budget superhero films can make a giant impact, and with a 2018 sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp, coming this July, along with plans for a 3rd film, WDI has decided to expand the new Marvel Land at DCA by replacing the adjacent 'bug's land' with their San Francisco based heroes - Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne - in an Ant-Man and the Wasp 'mini-land'

As you transition into the sub-land, you're immediately shrunk down from the colorful cosmos of Mission: BREAKOUT to the size of an ant located in the backyard of Hank Pym's San Francisco estate, where the quirky humor and mesmerizing visuals fields from the film take over with a kid friendly play area where you ride the 'ants' in a Dumbo -esque spinner attraction, and finally a dark ride where Scott, Hope, and Hank Pym try to teach you the guests how to use the 'ant' suit and enter the quantum realm.

With Ant-Man making references to both Adventures Thru Inner Space and it's a small world within the film - it seems like a perfect theme park match for DCA and keeping their expanded Marvel plans -- but also within their original theme of California based attractions.

As an addition to “Pixar Pier”, Crush’s EAC Coaster will be taking over Goofy’s Sky School, a new overlay that will make this off-the-shelf ride a must-do for all ages.

As you enter the loading area, themed as the Marine Life Institute, you will board your “Sea turtle” and go on a wild journey through the EAC.

There would be tunnels added to various places on the track, like the lift hill and the landing section, to allow for projections and character moments.

Bonus: As for a new name for the park will be Disney’s Worlds of Adventure, emphasizing the fact that you are going on an adventure through many Disney Worlds, like Marvel, Pixar, Fox, etc.

Roger Rabbit's Toontown Trolley
1515704733330.png

Toontown is becoming a valuable space in Disneyland and for that reason, this LA-based IP will be moving parks to make a Toontown close easier. Taking place in Stage 17 in Hollywoodland, Roger Rabbit's Toontown Trolley will be similar to the ride originally planned for DHS. The ride starts by going through the streets of LA, then going into the movie studio, before lastly ending up in Toontown (not to be confused with the DL Toontown).

Hollywoodland to Dalmatian Drive

Welcome to Dalmatian Drive, where everything from puppies to evil Cruella de Vil live; a street that gives 101 Dalmatians fame. Monsters, Inc. Mike and Sully to the Rescue is re-themed and re-routed to become Dalmatian Car Chase, based off the actions of Cruella and the truck driver; the exterior of it and all others will be touched up and re-painted to look like 1930s/40s London row-houses. One of the stores, Off the Page, is now Pongo and Perdita's Doghouse; Award Wieners is now Radcliffe Family Cuisine; and a new stage show, London Under the Sky!

Bonus: The park will be renamed Disney's Compass Park, representing different directions Disney has taken (movies, parks, etc.).

-Coco: Vuelo de los muertos (Flight of the Dead)-
1515715134915.png

This retheme of Soarin will take guests on fantastic, breathtaking flight around the beautiful Land of the Dead from the hit film Coco.
This ride will celebrate the culture of California's large Hispanic population (the state is right on the border) as well as tie into Pixar's most recent smash hit!
Sure the film is set in Mexico, but if Radiator Springs (explicitly stated to not be in California) is close enough, than Mexico is close enough (besides, the ride goes to the Land of the Dead, not Mexico, and dead people are everywhere).

california rescue: starring the rescuers
orville-flights.jpg

replacing soarin' around the world, this new attraction will be based on the underrated classic, the rescuers. Take flight on a new flying device the rescue aid society has created with the help of wilbur as the rescue aid society soar over the sights of california to find a lost little girl and boy. The ending will be the kids being found, and flown back home, safe and sound.
Bonus: the new name of the park will be disney's americana park, focusing more on just california while also not being as controversial of a name as disney's america was.

Inside Out OSP #3 .jpg

Inside the Mindscape!

Bugs Land gets a long overdue makeover by changing this larger than life garden into our friend Rileys mindscape from Inside Out. Taking the already existing rides we change Flik's Flyers into Fears flight where we will help fear overcome his... well, fear, of heights; Francis' ladybug boogie turns into Disgusts Dizzying Journey; Princess Dots Puddle Park turns into A Rainy Day with Sadness; Tuck and Roll's Drive em Buggies will be Angers Traffic Tumble, and Heimlich's Chew Chew Train will become A Train of Thought Tour with Joy. And although the It''s Tough to be a Bug theater has been used to run movie previews lately, I will change the theater into an almost Innovations-like space where kids can play on the different mind islands and eat pizza (with and without broccoli) from a new quick service location Called "Brain Food."

Bonus: California Adventure will embrace the trend of movie themes and be renamed to Adventures in the Silver Screen.

UP fits the Grizzly Peak area nicely. In fact, it’s already there, providing the theme to the Challenge Trail across from the rapids (it replaced Brother Bear). Your descriptions for bringing UP to the rafts are very pleasant, and I’d like to know more – a great One Sentence challenge is squeezing in more details! This is certainly the sort of overlay they’d do in DCA…however Paradise Falls is set in South America, making it pretty far from California.

Bonus: DSC. A nice, simple name.

This is an ideal overlay in so many ways! Ant-Man is Californian (finding Cali-based characters was the toughest part of this challenge), he can easily replace A Bug’s Land, and he compliments Mission: BREAKOUT next door. (Especially since we know more Marvel is coming to DCA.) Excellent. Also, a great example of run-on sentence fu.

Goofy’s Sky School is a good choice for improvements, since despite the Goofy gloss it’s still basically a DCA 1.0 ride. Your enclosed (Partially? Wholly?) redo sounds like WDSP’s ever-popular Crush Coaster, and it fits California really well. Apparently the nearby Grand Californian hotel guests already dislike their Sky School views, so enclosing it might be tricky. Otherwise, excellent.

Bonus: D’s Worlds of Adventure would be an ideal name for a broader theme. It sounds a bit like Islands of Adventure.

I salute your foresight to rescue Roger Rabbit from his imperiled location in Disneyland into a more appropriate setting. I’m a fan of reviving DHS’s proposed Toontown Trolley idea. For this challenge’s purposes, though, it isn’t an overlay of an existing attraction. Roger could easily replace Monsters Inc. Mike & Sully to the Rescue, as another option.

A 101 Dalmatians dark ride would be hugely awesome (just look at so many SYWTBAI proposals from last week). I like the ride and how it bleeds out into the surrounding land. The one lamentable problem: This is not a Californian-set story. It’s London-set.

Bonus: Like it.
