Act 2, Scene 4 - Team Purple

After a marathon few days holed up in their offices within the dark recesses of the TDO offices in California, the Purple division of WDI compiled a lengthy list of new additions to the parks at WDW. These were not just any additions though. With a mandate to bring the thrills to Orlando and in turn generate some enthusiasm from a younger crowd, a group of 3 proposals was brought forward for approval. Here's a brief peek inside the inner workings of what almost came to happen.

Oogie's Revenge
Oogie exterior.png
Taking the term thrill literally, this new addition to the Magic Kingdom will have guests enter the world of Halloween Town and come face to face with the gambler himself, Oogie Boogie. Built behind the Haunted mansion and It's a Small World, the attraction would be an extension of the eeriness of the mansion and use both storytelling, theming and a coaster ride to generate all the excitement one could want in an attraction along the lines of Tower of Tower. With a slow start to see what Lock, Shock and Barrell, are up to, the ride gets moving as you funnel your way into Oogie's lair. Filled with a number of hard banking turns and corkscrews, the ride slows down just enough in spots to ramp things up with a turn around the roulette wheel and an assist from the Pumpkin King himself.

Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride
Jumba's_Time_Machine.jpg

A high-flying adventure over the seven seas, board an inverted surf-board coaster designed by Dr. Jumba Jookiba and surf over Adventureland in an attempt to rescue the captured Experiment 626 from the notorious villain Captain Gantu. An attraction filled with high speeds, exhilarating corkscrews and inversions, and a killer soundtrack, Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride is sure to please both the Lilo and Stitch fans and thrill junkies.

Avalanche
b6d438354fc84c74965d0b766fa2399a.jpg
Over the years, many a mountain attraction has fallen by the wayside at Epcot, but now with this new chance to add some high octane coasters to WDW, those plans will get an update. As part of a large expansion and addition to the Canada pavilion in World Showcase will come Avalanche, combining a bit of old Epcot and new. Using the current O Canada space as a natural queue and load/unload area, the lead up to the attraction will provide riders with various visuals and research about the Yukon and British Columbia areas of Canada as well as examples of the sheer force and speed of the numerous avalanches that occur in the regions with survival gear placed around. With a slow start through some mountain passes, your crew accidentally triggers an avalanche and the race is on. You'll fly at breakneck speeds trying to outrun the avalanche as you can feel the wind, chill and roar of the avalanche all around you during this rip roaring ride

After going through numerous deliberations with the bean counters in accounting and scrounging enough funds from the recent food price increases, the decision was made to greenlight...

1_CL703MaslGYsHcvQ4fvoYw.jpg
The WDI Purple division has worked extensively, toying with multiple ideas, but eventually settled on the attraction they felt had the most potential in Orlando. With the expansion of Tomorrowland with the TRON attraction as well as already having Space Mountain, the Western side of Magic Kingdom was empty comparatively, so the inclusion of a new E-Ticket thrill ride to Adventureland made the most sense, leading to the choice of Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride being selected, funded, and soon to be built.

As Avalanche would prove a logistical nightmare in expenses for demolition and new construction in the far end of the World Showcase, the idea was eventually retired. The Nightmare Before Christmas attraction proved too ”mature” for family audiences at the Magic Kingdom, featuring not only creepy imagery, but also a subtheme of gambling which test audiences didn't react well to.

For these reasons, as well as the closure of Stitch’s Great Escape leaving room for one of Disney’s most popular and under-represented IP’s in the Magic Kingdom, it made the most sense to WDI to choose the construction of Adventureland’s Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride.

ACT 2 SCENE 4 - TEAM ORANGE

Team Orange comes to a decision...

Team Orange collectively critiqued all proposals (including many not seen here) listing out the pros and cons for each and offering up solutions whenever possible. The Great Wall of China coaster struck us as scenic and thrilling, yet it was undone by the thin storyline and uncertainty about its visual impact on World Showcase.

Mission Exterestria was popular both for its exceptionally creative backstory as well as its choice of the Disney-patented flying coaster ride system, though the two components were difficult to reconcile for a concept we all decided would be better served by a dark ride.

giphy.gif

Ultimately it was decided that Storm Mountain’s potential cons - lack of a specified ride system initially, the need to tie it in educationally with Epcot’s mission statement - were the most easily overcome, as it was a simple matter of fleshing out the successful and inspiring basic premise (to add to Disney’s “mountain range”). The educational component could be handled in the queue, pre-show and overall Pavilion, while the well-received flying coaster system from Mission Exterestria could be ported over, thus preserving positive aspects of multiple proposals.

The ride’s queue serves as the Fireworks Factory, home to the long-abandoned fireworks game from Discovery Bay. From there, a showbuilding behind the Pavilion has been relocated and the land slightly lowered to not dominate the World Showcase skyline.

MISSION: EXTERRESTRIA

space-mountain-gallery07.jpg

Using a flying coaster technology, Mission: Exterestria would replace Mission: Space and take you on a journey where you fly around the galaxy in search of Extraterrestrial life on the new planet Exterrestria.

As you enter Nasa’s Future World East Head Quarters, you begin to go through various pre-shows and interactive rooms teaching you about the vast galaxy and outer space before boarding you begin to board your jetpack as Nasa’s newest team of astronauts tasked to explore the galaxy.

The coaster would begin with you flying around Future World East before taking off into Outer Space flying to the far off planet called Exterrestria, made out of a bunch of futuristic purple and blue rocks.

Your journey flys around the planet, passing by caves with colored waterfalls and geysers (a nod to Rainbow Caverns) and ends inside a massive volcano like cave with geysers of purple and blue lava like liquid coming out, as well as collapsing rocks, before you eventually find exterrestrial life who ends up saving you.

Mission: Exterrestria would be a fun journey with exciting inversions, two lift hills, one launch, and massive show scenes on a thrilling roller coaster that rivals Rockin’ Roller Coaster Staring Aerosmith, including this attraction being the longest Flying Coaster in the world.

STORM MOUNTAIN

MOUNTAIN

hollingshead.gif

Storm Mountain is a thrilling enclosed roller coaster coming to Epcot’s all-new Weather Pavilion in Future World West.

The Weather Discussion Institute (WDI) has established a base in Epcot to research Orlando’s bizarre daily weather patterns, and to educate visitors with a floor full of hands-on meteorological exhibits. They even invite guests to board their unique flying “StormRider” trains, designed to enter the eye of a tempest and collect valuable data.

Brave guests plunge into a raging hurricane where overwhelming effects such as projections, lightning strikes, wind tunnel tornadoes and water sprays combine with an extreme ride system to truly make guests feel the power of nature. Can you weather the excitement?

Team Purple - Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride

Big Lilo and Stitch fan, so nostalgia gives you props for this attraction theme. Adventureland is also an inspired choice, as with Tron coming in 2021, the west side of the MK will definitely need a thrill kick-up.

A map would really help (they aren't that hard to make!) A picture speaks 1,000 words and the auxiliary google doc descriptions could have been trimmed down or included in the google slides if you had a map - maps simplify the process and give the reader a visual to go off of. For instance this was going across from the Tiki Room, near Jungle Cruise...alright, luckily I know the MK layout, but what if a reader is not that familiar with where any of this is?

Take a screenshot from Google Earth (or Maps)...and then just trace it in a paint doc or something similar. All macs/PCs have some form of free tracing materials, and label it. If you want to get even fancier, draw your own map! Trace the layout and add in your creations. It not only helps for visuals, but makes your project seem more realistic because it proves to the reader that it fits in the location you're saying.

In terms of the google slide presentation - I really liked it! I've never seen so many gifs in the presentation before and while I would have liked a bit more customization in regards to the actual ride - they did add some superficial notes that made it more inviting to the reader to continue.

The sketches were also very nice and appreciated to those who did them - and it should be noted, kudos to all of you who stepped up...it's not about winning or losing - it's about improving.

In regards to teamwork --- not having Red, Disney Dad, and others available might actually be for the best in my opinion.

Because instead of them leading like they have in the past - others such as PerGron, Nate, and Evil have stepped up into huge roles for the team - and I've been around long enough to see when people progress...and you've gotten better each round and I think will continue to as the comp continues!

Team Orange - The Weather Pavilion/Storm Mountain

I'll keep most of the review to Storm Mountain since that was the prompt, but briefly touching on the Pavilion itself -- I like it, but it reminds me too much of The Land Pavilion right next door, it might as well be an expansion to the pavilion.

This is a common trait I've found in Weather Pavilion projects is that it obviously needs to touch on 'earth-bound' topics, so it will naturally be compared to The Land.

For instance your dining option is called Sunshine Eatery when The Land has Sunshine Seasons. And the Hurricane Cat 1 simulator is also pretty similar to StormStruck that was at Innoventions until 2016.

That being said - the focus of the project and review will be on Storm Mountain, and I must say this will definitely be an ambitious attraction! Like Purple, I think you did a smart thing by balancing out the coasters, this time in Epcot though, with Guardians in Future World East this would work well in Future World West. The vertical load was an impressive patent and the RCT3 images were very well done! I also appreciate the non-narrative story telling via visuals and projections, similar to Space Mountain. This iirc, is why I liked the Microverse coaster that Team Brava did in Sorcerer's Apprentice Season 4 -- and what do you know D Hindley and Ace are back at it again here:p Although that coaster was mostly @Voxel along with most of the project lol

Touching on the teamwork, similar to Purple - it's a busy time of year but it's also giving people an opportunity to lead who might have not had the opportunity in a more active setting. Disneylover152 and Outboundflight are becoming very strong imagineers because of the leadership opportunities this competition is providing them along with others like TwilightZone who did some images and more!

The experience in this comp will help you not only for the future rounds but also future competitions as well if you keep it up!

Overall -- I'm just glad I'm not making the winner pick on this one! I can be the 'fun uncle' and say both teams did well! Then quietly sit back and let Pi be the one to break the news. :D

Team Purple Review

(Sorry this is a bit later, I am always so slow at writing reviews and I'm not sure why. Hopefully my feed back makes sense though)

Let me start by saying that you guys have stepped up your game so much. I was concerned after the last round that I was going to have to seriously reshuffle the teams. I didn't want to do that since Team Orange had developed a really great working chemistry and you guys had a great working chemistry back in scene 1. But when a team misses the deadline completely without anything completed to turn in you start to seriously consider changing everything.

BUT

I had a feeling you guys were gonna be able to handle it and that you just needed a little kick in the pants to get moving. Once you guys started moving, you did phenomenally! Through disease, busy work/social schedules, team mates having to step out of the game, and more you guys came together and were the first to submit for all three parts and did a truly remarkable job collaborating and working together.

This scene was about team work. And after a rock round or two, you came together and knocked the team work aspect of this project out of the park!

Well done!

BUT

This round did have a project too. It wasn't only about team work. And with both teams excelling at the team work and brainstorming side of this, it really does come down to the ride itself.

Let's start with the presentation!

Slides is a great tool for presentations. I worry teams may be over relying on it slightly, but it is a simple and easy to use tool for group projects that encourages a lot of visuals. So, repeat uses are not really an issue like they may be with certain presentation styles.

The white background is a personal pet peeve of mine. Both in Imagineering and in academic/professional use. I actually used to tutor public speaking/presentation making. The background color of your slides can go a long way towards helping it feel more cohesive and unified visually.

I loved all the visuals and little added flairs to the presentation! One or two slides felt a bit busy (especially with the GIFs which I mostly loved, but once or twice it was too much). But overall this was a very colorful, vibrant, and visually appealing presentation with some great original art/photoshops as well as great reference photos and flair added!

I have mixed feelings on dividing the write up between Slides and Docs.

On one hand, the biggest problem with slides is that it makes longer, more detailed write ups difficult as Slides is not meant for huge blocks of text. slides is very much focused on visuals and excels at that. So, using Docs to display the write ups for specific topics is a clever way to get around the issues with slides. I really admire the smart work around you came up with.

On the other hand, constantly switching between slides and various documents means that the flow of reading it is constantly interrupted. It doesn't flow smoothly. That becomes more jarring when each Doc has a different formatting.

I think your presentation could have been stronger if you either put everything on Slides, everything on Docs, or have a complete Slide than a switch to Docs in stead of switching back and forth. OR at the very least reduce the number of times I have to click out of Slides and come back in. The preshow is summarized rather thoroughly in the facade write up doc, but another doc writes out the pre-show in its entirety. These could have easily been combined into one. Or the complete write up of the preshow could have been cut out (even though it was excellent) as there was already the very nice summary. Also, the youtube video for the song could have been posted to the forum with the link to the slides rather than linked in the title page of the slide. That would have cut out an extra step or two for the reader as we click around.

These are little issues and they stem from a clever idea to fix a problem found in Slides. But these are things that effect the flow. A bit more thought no just to the individual components but to how they come together as a whole can go a long way.

The concept of the ride is great! I love Lilo & Stitch and this seems like a truly great attraction for the truly great film!

The swinging inverted coaster to simulate a rocket surfboard is excellent! The story is perfectly simple for a thrill ride. Stitch was kidnapped, let's chase after him! Perfect and concise. Just like the story for a thrill ride should be.

I think you may have leaned a bit too far into the show and DVD sequels. Especially considering this is a thrill ride that would attract and older audience most likely. But with one or two exceptions it all felt either general enough or self explanatory enough that it doesn't become a problem. At the end of the day, it is just Stitch kidnapped by an evil alien. Simple, easy to convey.

My main concern from your initial pitch was how this would fit into Adventureland.

I definitely belive Lilo & Stitch can fit into Adventureland. I had serious doubts about how they could fit into WDW's Adventureland.

BUT

@Evilgidgit had probably my favorite section of the project with his description of the facade and how it connects to the rest of Magic Kingdom. It turned my biggest concren and uncertainty of the project into my favorite part! That transistion was flawlessly execute and an excellent write up. Kudos to @Evilgidgit!

The ride itself is good. It seems properly fun and exciting! Very thrilling! Some excellent elements! There are a few small details that mess with it. Mostly the battle scene. A minute is a very long time to be sitting still of a thrilling rollercoast. 10-20 seconds would have been more appropriate for a stop. Or perhaps not even stop at all. Either do the scene on a lift hill or in motion. That way you don't lose the kinetic energy of the ride. Plus, long stopped sections really hurt capacity (which I will get to soon).

Other than these issues though, the ride sounds like an amazing and fun experrience! I would adore riding this! And the celebration scene at the end seems like a great finale!

Capacity is the biggest issue here. I'm not usually a stickler for ride capacity, but it stood out on this one. Four person to a car in a single file line may give a mroe immersive feeling of surfing, but four person cars are extemely low capacity. Especially considering that launch coasters really limit how many trains you can have going at once. Adding in a minute long stopped scene and that really hurts capacity even more.

Doing some quick math, your ride you have and hourly capacity of roughly 100 guests. That is being generous with ride time estimate based on what you wrote. That is less than a third of the capacity of the Barnstormer (the lowest capacity ride in Magic Kingdom). If this attracted the same crowds as Space Mountain does usually, wait times for Hawaiian Rollercoaster ride would be roughly 20 hours long on an average day.

Like I said, I'm not a real stickler for capacity, but this has pushed the boundaries of realistic capacity a bit too far for even my low realism standards.

Overall though, a great presentation and a great ride! Just some issues that hold it back. But this is a team of mostly newer players, and the mistakes made here are rather common among relatively newer players. You guys are an incredibly talented bunch of imagineers who should be incredibly talented of what you created!

STORM MOUNTAIN & THE WEATHER PAVILION
Join Us
Team Orange Review

Another excellent project that doesn't leave me too much to say beyond "well done!"

As I said in team purple's review, the team work and brainstorming process was excellent again. This project was definitely much more collaborative than the last and it really helped to elevate it even more. Another great concept coupled with great execution.

I won't talk too much about the pavilion itself. It seems very clever and well done. I haven't read Space's review yet if he posted his already, but I am going to guess knowing him he says the same thing I am about to: The pavilion feels a bit to similar in its layout/themes to the Land Pavilion. The spinner ride adds some nice variety, but it seems very similar. Especially since Soarin' exists and is already expanding the Land pavilion's themes to the sky. And, if I'm not mistaken, the restaurant in both your pavilion and the Land Pavilion has the same name. Could have save yourself some trouble and just connected the ride to the Land Pavilion and cut out the extra step. Maybe even rebrand it as the "nature" or "environment" pavilion if you'd like to reflect how it's themes have changed over the years.

Though, like I said, despite it's similarities tot he land Pavilion your weather pavilion is excellent!

The queue was very well done. There was clearly a lot of thought at play here and your plot is very clearly well established. I'm not usually a fan of games in the queue (as they always seem to cause back ups), but the ones you have seem like fun and just simple enough to not cause people to stop too much. The preshow seems like the right mix of fun and educational for Epcot and Tom tempest seems like a really fun character. You don't say too much about him. but it is enough to paint a picture of someone who I am sure would become a theme park favorite!

The ride itself is breathtaking! An excellent collaboration between @TheOriginalTiki and @D Hindley if I am not mistaken. Very visually based and kinetic. The perfect amount of theming and story telling for a ride like this to convey! A great sense of escalation from scene to scene in a very natural way. And the RCT visuals really do add to it! Perhaps a bit similar to Space Mountain, but not to the point of it becoming a worry considering all the differences elsewhere in it. Especially with the ride system which was an excellent choice! This would be an incredibly exhilirating experience.

My main problem with the ride is the presentation. The writing is great. The pictures are great. BUt the format of the writing has some issues. Notice the difference between how I formatted this review compared to team purples. Everything is alligned to the left and no paragraphs are indented. This creates the feeling that every paragraph is a big block of text and makes the write up feel a lot longer and harder to read.

Aligning things to the center or indenting paragraphs goes a long way to helping make the text a lot more reader friendly. Especially in google Docs. Google Docs is an excellent tool, but it's biggest downside is that it runs the risks of making rides look like essays or big blocks of texts. There were simple fixes you could have done to counteract the "big block of text syndrome" and instead it stands as something that makes your positively excellent project feel difficult to read.

The heavy use of pictures does help, but with Docs it also messes with the flow a bit as pictures tend to lead to awkward page breaks. But that is a small issue.

Overall, the project and the team work were excellent! True stand out work! Perhaps it is because the project was so well done that it made the issues with it stand out that much more. Especially with how easily fixed the issues with it could have been

--The Set Up--

Parades can be found in almost any small town. My sleepy little home town does an annual Christmas parade.

Obviously, Disney has a much higher budget and much more experienced performers/designers. So, it is not surprising that Disney can do a better job crafting parades than small towns do.

But why are Disney parades so much better than even other major theme parks with similar budgets and talent behind them?

What makes this...

Festival-of-Fantasy.jpg

So, much better than this...

superstar-parade-06.jpg

It is the DETAILS! The details are what make the difference! The details are what elevate Disney parks above other major theme parks. This is especially true when it comes to shows and parades. The details in the costumes, the floats, the everything makes the difference. Just look at the two pictures and compare and you'll see so many little things that elevate one above the other.

(my favorite detail that hurts the Universal Parade is the cast member walking beside it looking incredibly grumpy)

q1ojrdc.png

Look at this depressed angry man in the foreground of the photo and then realize that I took this picture from the official Universal website. That should tell you all you need to know about the difference in how much the two parks care about the little details.

Act 2 is all about focusing in on different aspects of armchair imagineering. This project if about the details. Bringing all the different aspects of armchair imagineering together in one project.

Music, reference photos, original art, writing, font type/colors that adds to the atmosphere, videos, clearly defining what is dialogue and what is not, presentation format, use of bolding and font sizes for emphasis and organization, etc.

It is these little details that elevate a good project into a great one! When they are used together (maybe not all of them at once, just the right ones for that project) they can lead to some amazing things.

--The Challenge--

Imagineers, this is your challenge.

You must work as a team to create a new parade anywhere in Walt Disney World EXCEPT Magic Kingdom.

Magic Kingdom already has a parade and has historically had the most parades (Usually 2-3 at once if we count nighttime and dance party parades). Plus, there are so many castle park parades around the world. You guys have to create a parade (any kind of parade) for any location other than Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World.

You must include at least one written sentence, one picture, and one song in your presentation

The picture and the song do not have to be original, you can find them on line.

The written sentence does have to be original lol. As much as I adored the Disney Stars and Motorcars Parade that used to be in MGM Studios, You can't just copy a description of that and turn it in haha.

And of course, you can use other elements too and as many sentences, pictures, and songs as you'd like as long as you have at least 1.

This Scene is due Friday, 10/19 at

--All for One: Group Based Project--

This Scene will be an All for One: Group Based Project. Meaning your whole team will work all together to create one project.

--Elimination Round--

At the end of this round, someone from the losing team may be eliminated. This will be based primarily on activity and participation. Past rounds will be taken into consideration too. There is a chance no one will be eliminated. There is also a chance that teams will at least be slightly shuffled around afterward for going into Act 3 even if no one is eliminated to balance things.

--Team Captains--

As a new feature of the game, team captains will be nominated each challenge to lead the team through the scene! They will be in charge of organizing the team and keeping them focused throughout the round.

@OutboundFlight will be the captain of Team Orange this round.

@pixie_princess will be the captain of Team Purple this round.

If either of you either can not do it this round or, for whatever reason, do not feel comfortable to do it this round, no worries! Just let me and your team know as soon as possible so another person can take over for you. If anyone would like to be the team captain in an upcoming scene, let me know and I can make sure that happens!

Good news!

No need for eliminations after this last round!

Bad news!

It is because over the course of Scene 4, three people left the game as life got too busy. No hard feelings whatsoever, it was great to have you around! If you ever want to guest review anything to stay involved in a less time consuming way, feel free to ask! Also, the One Sentence Competition is a great way to do some imagineering with less time involved and less commitment!

The One Little Spark Competition wishes a fond farewell to:

Team Purple - Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride
I don't have much to say that hasn't already been said. You did amazing. Period

Team Orange - Storm Mountain
I'm going to be honest. I'm not crazy about this idea. I appreciate the map, the art is good. But let's break this down.

The Weather Boneyard
Nothing screams Disney like walking through a junkyard! No but really, this should have been inside the pavillion as a walkthrough attraction. Cool idea, bad placement.

Tornado
I love a swing ride and this is a fun twist on a classic. I think the queue is unneeded though. It probably could have switched with the Boneyard.

WeatherCenter
It's fine. A place for the kids and grandparents to play while older siblings and parents go on Storm Mountain

Storm Mountain
Alright here's the nitty gritty. I wish we see more of Tom Tempest. He could really be a fun Dreamfinder-esque character. The coaster overall? Really cool and interesting. There were a couple ??? moments for me, the water chamber and the tornado to be specific. I just don't understand how it'd work practically. But maybe that's just me. A solid ride though, and a solid pavillion overall.

On the whole, it's good but a lot of little things just don't work for me personally.
