Hall of Fame Broadcaster Bob Murphy Dies

Associated Press/AP Online

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Hall of Fame broadcaster Bob Murphy, who covered the New York Mets from the team's inception in 1962 until his retirement after last season, died Tuesday. He was 79.

Murphy died at the Hospice of Palm Beach County, the team said. He had battled lung cancer since his retirement.

Murphy worked as a baseball broadcaster for 50 years, starting with the Boston Red Sox in 1954 and then moving to the Baltimore Orioles in 1960. He came to the expansion Mets in their first year, joining Lindsay Nelson and Hall of Fame slugger Ralph Kiner as the broadcast team. The trio worked together on radio and television for 17 years before Nelson left for San Francisco.

"It's like losing a brother," Kiner said in a statement. "We did everything together, we went to movies, ate together and traveled together. It's so hard to fathom he's gone. It's has been a terrible year for me - first I lose my wife to cancer and now Bob."

Murphy spent the final 15 years of his career working on Mets radio broadcasts with Gary Cohen. Kiner called his longtime partner "the brother I never had."

Murphy's signature phrases included talking about "the happy recap," after Mets victories and cautioning fans listening to broadcasts of tight games to "fasten your seat belts."

"He could always find a silver lining, even when things weren't going well. I liked that about him," said Yankees manager Joe Torre, a former Mets manager and player. "He loved what he did for a living, right to the very end."

Murphy was honored by the Mets at Shea Stadium last September.

"I've just loved it. It's been an incredible ride," Murphy told the fans, who chanted "Mur-phy! Mur-phy!" when the broadcaster was introduced. "I'm going to start missing you all the minute I walk off this field."

Murphy received the Ford Frick Award in 1994 and was inducted into the broadcasters' wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame. The radio booth at Shea was named in his honor last season.

The San Diego Padres' former ballpark was known as Jack Murphy Stadium from 1981-1997, named after his brother, the former sports editor of The San Diego Union, in 1981.

Murphy is survived by his wife, Joye; daughters Kevin Murphy, Kasey Murphy, Kelly Morris, Penny Haft and Patricia Haft; and son Brian Murphy. A private family gathering is scheduled for Wednesday in Florida, and the Mets said a memorial service in the New York area will take place at an unspecified date.

Contrares blew higher holier than hell. We should have let the Red Sox sign him initially and get bombed.

Getting anything for him and saving $$$ was a total steal. Loiza has a good upside and should provide stability, which is all the Yanks need.

Garciapara had to go, it just wasn't working with everything that happened in the off season and then during this season with his injury and not playing that crucial game against the Yankees.

Suppoedly Nomar said he was going to sit out the rest of the year on the DL if he wasn't traded, due to his achilles heel.

And does this really surprise anyone?

I think the chances of Nomar being back with the Red Sox after being jilted were nil, but now it's nevah gonna happen. This is good for the Red Sox and it's good for Nomar--both should be better off for it.

I'm surprised at Red Sox fans that are just "stunned" and "sad" that he is gone. Brian, you've been the most level-headed one I've seen through this.

Well, I'm not gonna say that I "WANTED" him gone...he's a great player and nobody can deny him of that. I looked at the chemistry of the team...how each player interacted with one another...and...Nomar was the loner of the group. Manny is always smiling and having fun with the other guys, Pedro is the same way...Ortiz is ALWAYS smiling (aside from the bat throwing incident). Nomar was always to himself...just did what he had to do and went home. He will be missed...heck, last season, his merchandise sold 2 to 1 over every other player on the team.

Listening to Roberts and Cabrera talk in an interview...I'm glad they are apart of the Red Sox. Cabrera went WAY out of his way to make sure he played the next day...because he couldn't WAIT to get on the field in a RS uniform. Roberts is so excited to be a part of the RS/NYY rivalry. These are guys that truly love the game and truly appreciate being part of the "Red Sox Nation" and everything that goes along with it.

Nomar...I hope you can help the Cubbies to the World Series!

(BTW...I love every member of the Red Sox...including Theo!...the only person I dislike is Terry Francona...and Tigsmom...if you'd like to talk about why the manager gets the blame, I'll be glad to entertain you with my opinions :) )

As for being "level-headed" I really don't care who wins (of course I'd LOVE to see the Red Sox win once before I die!), I just hate to see the same teams win every year. (If you don't believe me...a part of me wanted the Panthers to win the Super Bowl...we had our victory...I wanted to see the Panthers be that Cinderella story that came back to win it all).

Brian, we can arg...talk baseball anytime. :D
I love the RS/NYY rivalry and though I'll always pull for my guys to win, I love a good game even more.

Looks like the trades continue...
Robbie Alomar back to the White Sox from the Diamondbacks....Ken Williams is looking to go all the way.

(and I just saw that they made Testaverde the starting quarterback in Dallas!)

I don't think Carl Everett and Robbie Alomar are going to make up for the loss of Frank Thomas and Ordonez or that they would make it anyway with them.

Didn't say they were going to do it, just that he is determined to do it.
