Oceanview vs Verrandah

We usually have a verandah, but last year we took an inside cabin with the magical porthole, which is pretty much an ocean view, IMO. It was fine for 4 days, and fun to see the characters on the porthole. But it's hard to beat chocolate croissants and coffee on the verandah in the morning. I think it would be easier for me to handle it than for my wife.

Pros -- it's cheaper.
Cons -- no fresh air, no extra space, less natural light.

Of course, all those "cons" are negated if you just go up on deck. So it just depends on what you like.

After seeing an Ocean-View and staying in a Verandah on our last cruise I would choose either. Those Ocean-View portholes are huge!! The only plus to a Verandah is stepping out and smelling/ feeling the ocean. I also enjoyed looking left and right when pulling into a port. Like Tammy said… I would rather go than not go at all!

Personally, once we tried our first verandah, we have never gone back to an oceanview. If money was an issue or if we had small children, I might reconsider. I use our balcony quite a bit so it is something I feel good about having.

First Disney cruise we had one large porthole on Deck 6, on our cruise last week (still feeling blue) we had a Verandah. I am now trying to figure out something for next year and even looking at insides based on price. I also think the destination is a factor. If we were to do Alaska again I think I would love to have the verandah, but for a trip like Grand Cayman - Cozumel, I am not so sure its worth it. For us anyway...

We have done both. They are about the same.
Wow, I have to say that I disagree with this. There are certainly good reasons to book an Ocean View rather than a Verandah; but I would never say that they're pretty much the same.

The fresh air, the extra space, the private outdoor space to read or have room service really make a big difference, I think. As always, JMO.

I would agree with Chuck. The fresh air and separate space is nice. The square footage on the Dream/Fantasy ocean view vs balcony is about the same with the exception of the deluxe balcony rooms. They also have the same floor plan. However, the experience is different! On the Dream/Fantasy the price difference can be just a few dollars a day.

I guess we just don't spend that much time in the room. I never found going out on a balcony that thrilling. Having the big window seat was just as nice.

We aren't in the room too much either; however, when the little ones are napping it gives us a separate area to talk and relax. Plus, we have the fresh air. Also it is nice when others are getting ready etc. I enjoy sitting out there knowing it is cold back back home, and I am in the nice warm moist air. Also great for people watching when in port.

After I've been in the bathroom, my whole family goes out on the veranda "to breathe." I don't know what they mean by that. I assume this would not be an option with the porthole.

Also, the cabins are just plain small; such is the nature of cruise travel. Having a few extra square feet as a retreat when everyone else is trying to get going in the morning, or getting dressed for dinner, is really handy.

We're spoiled. I think my wife would refuse to cruise without a veranda. We love to be out there in the morning, or when the scenery is nice, or when we're going in or out of port. Every trip, after a shore excursion, I stay down below while my family hurries on up to the cabin. They then stand on the veranda while we take pictures of each other, me on shore, and them on the balcony. It's a tradition, and it really adds a small extra dimension to our photo album. They're all really nice, but I still don't understand that whole "to breathe" thing.

Even if you're from a warm weather climate like me, there's just something about sitting out on the balcony enjoying the Caribbean breezes. On my most recent Disney Dream cruise, we were on the starboard side in the shade at both Castaway Cay and Nassau.

We have only had a verrandah and I think would not be happy without the fresh air. I walk outside everytime we are in the cabin. I love sleeping with the door open to hear the sea and feel the fresh air (as long as its not too hot) When I have trouble sleeping I like to go out and sit and read.
