OC Register - Disneyland and Universal Studios ask Newsom not to finalize theme park reopening plans just yet

They have guidelines they can release at any moment. Disney has asked them not to, because Disney believes they are still up for negotiation. The Governor acquiesced to their request NOT to push the guidelines.

All of the theme parks in California, through their industry trade group, asked the Governor to not release the guidelines once they finally got a peek at them the day before.

If the Guidelines are basically...
  • Stay Closed Until 2021
  • Then Reopen In 2021 at 25% Of Your Design Capacity
  • Reopen at 100% Of Your Design Capacity Only Once 99% of Californians Receive Covid Vaccine in 2022
That's not much of a guideline. That's basically just telling this industry to go kill themselves and go bankrupt, then sell their destroyed theme park properties to apartment developers later in '21.

I appreciate your positivity, but to me this feels like more spin than a perpetual unending ride on Mad Tea Party. Only in the aftermath, the businesses on Harbor are left holding the puke bucket.
I mean if you really wanted him to I'm sure he'd rather just come out and say, "Disney told us not to release the guidelines, so go ask them why they don't want to reopen their theme parks".

That is not even factually accurate.

Given the number of people that say they won't get a vaccine, this one seems unreasonable if remotely true:
  • Reopen at 100% Of Your Design Capacity Only Once 99% of Californians Receive Covid Vaccine in 2022
At some point, California will have to say...you have access to the vaccine, you are solely accountable should you contract the virus when you had a viable tool to help reduce the opportunity to contract. Perhaps theme parks and other ventures could require proof of vaccination as a requirement for entry? Not sure if the ACLU or other entity will have something to say about that.

We're continuing to work with the industry, and, by the way, amusement parks aren't just Disney

I would suggest everyone who is currently furloughed by Disneyland to abandon that sinking ship like First Class Women on the Titanic.
Yep, they really should all be looking for other jobs at this point. It will reopen and if they want to apply again, I'm sure there will be some opportunities. Disney may already have a giant HR file where they reach out to former employees when the opportunity to hire presents itself. If not, there will likely be a whole new crop of young kids ready to dip their toes in the Disney pool.

Is there any course but litigation left? I can't imagine Disney thinking about trying to scrape together a workforce after a year, with layoffs and resignations decimating their rosters, and everyone needing significant training on day one. They have to sue at this point.

Speaking of the Covid vaccine, yesterday the state health director announced that California will not release the Covid vaccine approved by the FDA to Californians until they have studied it themselves and given it the "California stamp of approval".

“We plan to have a team of experts review the findings so we can put the California stamp of approval on it before we really roll it out across the state.” -Dr. Ghaly, California Director of Health & Human Services

So there will be an additional delay from other states in having the Covid vaccine available to Californians. I can just see the big Las Vegas casinos running a promotion for Californians this winter...

"Stay Two Nights - Get A Free Covid Vaccine Shot Before Your Neighbors!" 🤣

That is my point, there are no official guidelines yet. So what you stated is not even close to being factually accurate.

But we just don't know.

What we do know is that the guidelines were shown to the theme park industry the day before they were to be released, and the industry found the guidelines so restrictive and so impossible to meet that they publicly asked the Governor to not release those guidelines without more discussion and a chance to loosen them.

Those must have been some darn scary guidelines to elicit that type of response!

Or it could be that the guidelines didn't allow them to reopen immediately so they complained. Point is we don't know, so it doesn't do anyone any good for you put out unfounded claims.

On this one we really need to just let cooler heads prevail on both sides until after the election (fingers crossed). The FDA put out guidance for manufacturers regarding the vaccine that will require additional safety protocols prior to an EUA “approval”. These standards have been communicated to manufacturers for weeks and were made public yesterday (over the objection of one particular individual in the federal government).

In essence the standards make clear any FDA vaccine approval will be fact/science based and require several months worth of phase 3 trial data, pushing any EUA until later this year.

You’re right to point out that applying more standards key sectors like theme parks while simultaneously undermining the key apolitical experts/civil servants the federal government responsible for ensuring the safety and efficacy of vaccines to slow the spread of the virus is a a politically irresponsible mistake. Barring any “external pressure” on the FDA, I sense come around Thanksgiving the Governor’s “expert team” will come to this similar conclusion.
