No more Great Movie Ride?

I know this idea isn't going to be too popular, but I think along with adding new scenes to GMR, the exterior should change as well.
It's true that Grauman's Chinease Theatre pretty much represents Hollywood, almost as much as the Hollywood sign itself, but if I'm not mistaken, it's because of the Chinease Theatre decor that the Hat is there. If they would change the Chinease Theatre to a generic 1920's/30's style theatre that has some of the same elements of the Chinease Theatre, then maybe the Hat could be taken down and the generic theatre could be used as the icon, along with the Earful Tower in a posistion. They might even be able to incorperate the hat into the design.
I doubt that'll happen though because it sounds like they're trying to move away from the "Hollywood That Never Was" theme, and to make an old time type theatre would kind of keep that around.
Just a thought...
First the wand and now they are going after the Hat!!!!!

Wand yes!! Hat NO WAY!!:zipit:

Just not the Muppets Wizard of Oz. Actually LOVE LOVE LOVE the Muppets, but that was not so good!!!

I actually wouldn't mind if they packed the Beauty & Beast and Indy Shows inside the GMR and .............KABOOM. Sorry, just not a big fan of these!:snore:

I was thinking "Disney Villains" where Oz is and then an ending similar to what they have now. I think that would be cool

I just asked about this in one of the MGM name change threads. Does anyone know the specifics of the MGM/Disney Licensing agreements to use MGM's Movies?

I know if either of them got out of the contract it would cost said companya a ton. Disney owns a bunch in MGM's Casinos, and a lot of MGM copyrighted stuff is throughout different areas of Disney. I can't tell you exactly what the agreement is like I just know it would cause a ton in royalties and such for either company to get out of.

I'm gonna ruffle some feathers here, but I think that the Hat should stay and the Theatre should go. The Hat is the icon of the Studios: it is an easily recognized Disney icon. Not to mention that Disney cannot take pictures of it, and they're not about to give up the ability to take shots of Hollywood Boulevard. (Last we knew, this was the case.) Unlike the Wand, the Hat did not ruin an icon because the Theatre never was the icon. If the GMR goes down, I hope they update the outside as well as the inside.

GMR should be fine. Management has choosen to invest in new, albeit ugly, costumes that should be debuting pretty soon. GMR should be safe, but if they say they are going to close it I will chain myself to one of those giant vehicles.

What do you mean Disney can't take pictures of the hat?

A few years ago, it was THE attraction at the park. But now with Tower of Terror and Rock and Roller Coaster, it's not the number one thing to see. I agree it's not the most attended ride in the park and that it need a refurb, but I don't want it to leave. IMHO, as long as it's still hot and rainy in FL, people will still go ride it.

I think it's pretty common knowledge that the contracts for the name and the content of the GMR were completely seperate, so the name change should have little to no effect. However, since this has turned into a GMR-fantasy rehab thread, since it's my favorite major attraction I have to put my two cents in LOL.

I'm fine with the updates, and removal, of major scenes, as long as the ride itself remains along the same lines and keeps the "classic" scenes in tact. Of course I am talking about the Singin' In the Rain/Mary Poppins scenes, Oz, Casablanca, etc. I don't think you'll ever see it demolished and redone as, say, a thrill ride : it serves great purpose at MGM by giving a "family" ride alternative to RnR and ToT (it's the only ride in the park many people who don't do thrill rides can actually do), and it also sucks crowds up and is super-high capacity (and could be tweaked even higher if necessary).

The western and gangster scenes work well, and still seem to impress the crowds. I hope those are left, but a few enhancements wouldn't be bad. Tarzan should be the first to go - with the exception of the Maureen O'Sullivan AA it was really pretty terribly done in the first place. It's just not even that well themed - you can see the walls. It's a shame to loose the O'Sullivan AA (it's a remarkable likeness, and it's increible how much it looks like her daughter, Mia Farrow, as well), but it's just unneccesary.

As much as it absolutely pains me to say it, Aliens should go too. When I say pains me - it REALLY does. I love that scene. You really feel as if you are on the ship, and the Alien AA's are spectaular. Problem? They have toned them down so much over the years that sometimes they don't do anything. They have taken the scare out of it. The reason I love them so much is because, like the Muppets would as AA's, for all intents and purposes they are "real", i.e. what was in the movies is exactly what is in front of you, unlike AA's of animated characters or flesh and blood people.

Next up on the chopping block should be the "horror" scene. A bunch of skelletons just isn't worth that much space.

As to what should be added, that's a whole other post. My one fantasy, though, would be a kick-butt Star Wars scene. A CLASSIC Star Wars scene, say the escape from the Death Star as they board the Falcon. Imagine seeing Obi-Wan and Darth fighting, while Han, Leia, and Luke are retreating. My God, a Carrie Fisher AA and my decision would be made : I would absolutely have to move to Orlando, LOL.

I might be the only one who think this....but it could be a very small room, or just a part of a room, but an AA of Marilyn MODESTLY done of her skirt blowing up I think would be really cool.

That is the iconic scene of her, and every time I think of the term Hollywood, she pops into my head. Just a thought anyways. :)

People always panic about GMR when there's mention of removing MGM from the park name. Most of the films represented in the ride itself are Warner Bros. films. The only ones related to MGM are Singin' in the Rain, Tarzan, and Wizard of Oz, and all of these are owned by Turner/WB. It might be closed for a variety of reasons, but it won't be because MGM is going away. They lost the rights to most of their older films many years ago.

It always amazed me that the most famous MGM movie of all-time, Gone With The Wind, didn't have a scene in GMR.

I think the reason for that is probably because Turner controls that one too, and probably would have wanted a fortune and they had all the could to eek out every last bit of Oz they could get.

The other issue is theme. The two scenes the film is most known for in terms of popular culture is Rhett and Scarlet going up the stairs, and then the final scene. Sure, there are other great candidates, but nothing people would say, "Oh, yeah, that's GWTW!" like they do when they enter the Indy scene, or Oz. The problem is, the scene of going up the stairs is controversial to say the least (some people go so far as to call it a "date rape" scenario), and while the final scene they probably could have gotten away with the "give a damn" line, building Tara for the exchange of two lines probably would have been a big expense.

But I agree, in a perfect world it belongs there. Lots of movies do. If I had my way, instead of Toy Story Mania I'd have doubled or tripled the size of the GMR and made it a 45-minute excursion through the history of film. I'd have a section dedicated to great screen couples, from Crawford and Gable, Hepburn and Tracy, to Liz and Richard, and Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. LOL in my fantasy we could have an R-rated version where we could do Nicholson on the stand in "A Few Good Men" and a nice Scorsese section with Godfather or Goodfellas, not to mention of course "Pulp Fiction". Ah, dreaming is fun. We know they are just going to add a couple of current selections if they ever do add show scenes. Always gotta go with what's popular now, as it is a theme park attraction and (unfortunately) not a museum.

TGMR usually always has a long line, unless its toward the end of the day when fantasmic is about to start or a parade. I love the ride and think its great, it probably could use a major update/refurb though.

Quick question about it, years ago in the alien scene, were there other AA alongside the current one or am I just remeber a dream or something? I remember around my spring break 1997 or 98 trip that she was talking to a couple of other AA figures, some guys or something. Has it always been like it is today or no?

As I asked a few posts above, can someone explain why Disney supposedly can't take pictures of the hat?

I think you misunderstood.

Disney cannot promote the Chinese Theater as it's icon. I am sure someone can explain it more detail (Martin? Lee?) but it boils down to the fact that it's some sort of a licensed structure, as it is a replica of the original. I'm not being very clear but again, I never quite understood how it worked.

The other issue is one of Disney management not wishing an icon of their park to be a replica of a structure, i.e. not unique. The castle, unique. SSE, unique. Tree of Life, unique. Chinese theater, not so much.

The hat isn't like the wand. Personally, I prefer it without the hat. I liked feeling like I was in old Hollywood when I saw the theater as I walked in. However, I cannot deny that more guests are probably pleased by being welcomed by a giant Disney icon as opposed to an image they may or may not be familiar with. Disney needs you to be greeted by Disney, or a structure unique that can be identified only with that park. Again, I wish it weren't there, but I can live with it because I know it's probably for the greater good, as opposed to just how I wish the parks were.

Well REdiseney hinted the Great Movie ride would be getting a major overhaul soon with new and improved scenes...including a new major scene revolving around...possibly....THE LORD OF THE RINGS!

The Combined might of an upgraded Great Movie Ride, Star Tours 2, and more George Lucas presence in the park would be more than a match for Harry Potter land.
