No gratuity - good or bad for CMs?

As I pointed out earlier, 18-20% may be the norm for YOUNGER diners, or those who live in metropolitan areas, but I personally know people who haven't gotten that news, and still go by the 15% standard. They only go higher for exceptional service. And I know that 18% has been the standard for almost two decades, but trust me, when you get to be my age, 20 years feels like yesterday.

A CM I know who works at the Brown Derby said non of the servers are happy about the dining plan change and are sure they will be getting stiffed out of tips.

Out of all the changes, this bugged me most. Not because I don't want to tip, but it was losing that convenience factor that irked me. I don't like carrying cash on me in the parks, other than a few bucks for odds and ends. Oh well.

I'm sure it will still be just as easy to charge the tip back to your room.

As some have said, I will no longer use the DDP. The best thing about it was everything was included. I have a trip in October and I PAID for the DDP and I glad that I get to go to those restaurants that I would not be able to afford otherwise, before the DDP no longer includes tips & appetizers.

I'm not sure I will use the DDP in February when we go again, I also have the DDE so its a personal decision. But I do think the CM's will lose, We're from NY and used to doubling tax and adding for tip, but people can forget when they are in florida since the tax rate is different and a double down there is no where near 15-18%, And its not intentional but simply a mistake, The CM's were better with the gratuity built in,

I am a server, as is my husband, and I believe it will hurt them. We took an envelope of cash last week for our trip entitled "gratuity" solely for the purpose of tipping in all areas, but there were a couple servers we didn't leave over and above 18% for because they just didn't give the service. If I would have had to pay for it all out of my pocket, they were still good "enough" for 18% but in a couple cases, just not worth the additional funds.

Maybe it was because of included gratuity that they gave a lesser service, but for me, as a person coming with extra gratuity to spend, and as a server myself, I think it's the wrong attitude.

In the case of next year when it's all in the guest's hands, I believe servers will suffer.

You are going to have people who don't realize it's in their hands, people who are just bad servers, people who "punish greatly" for bad service, then you are going to have people wanting to skimp to make up for ALL the money they are spending in different areas of the World, then you are going to have people who didn't mind throwing a couple bucks on top of the included 18% that can't afford to tip 25% completely out of their own pocket for every meal, and lastly, you are going to have people from all over earth that just don't even know what an average/good/bad tip is.

My understanding is that this was part of the Union contract negotiation and Disney conceded to not have the tip automatically included in the price. I'm afraid this will ultimately hurt the Servers. (We can argue the right or wrong of tipping percentages, but the bottom line will be less in tips.)

If the decision to not include gratuity was derived from collective bargaining, it is likely that extensive financial information was evaluated comparing the money derived from the included 18% gratuity and the non-included projections. I think the true bottm line is that, without sufficient knowledge of how all costs are distributed and accounted for, the "bottom line" is unknown.

Also, the calculation of gratuity is a tiny fraction of the entire contract that is bargained between the two parties. It is quite possible that the change from included to non-included gratuity was a concession (by either the Union or the Employer) made in exchange for a completely different benefit.

Finally, no matter what the agreement, once the contract is tentatively approved, it will not be ratified without the majority vote of the members. If the majority of employees felt this was a bad contract, they had the opportunity to vote it down.

I start at 20% and go up or down based on the level of service. Since we are traveling while the current plan is in effect, I will most likely just use the plan tip built in and add a cash tip if the service exceeds my expectations.

Put me in the boat that the new plan will hurt the nightly "take' of each server. I base this almost entirely on the missing appetizer.

How does this work if you have a large party? I just read that gratuity is included for groups with 6 or more, how will that work? Anyone know or have an idea?
