My guess is your not very familiar with EDM. It's not "Pop Music". It's the counter culture music for today's teens and young adults. There are a few cross-over artists like Marshmello, but on Pop Radio, you're not going to here Galantis ft. Charli XCX squeezed in between Taylor Swift and Lizzo. And these aren't Japanese artists. Galantis is a duo from Sweden and Charli XCX is English. The first ad was better. I know this was made for a Japanese audience but surely even the Japanese would prefer to listen to the nostalgic sounds of the Mario games over some cringeworthy pop music.
As for the land, it will certainly be aesthetically busy and I'm anticipating quite a bit of kinetic movement. On the other hand, construction footage shows quite a few static props that I worry will look jarring next to the moving ones. On the whole the theming looks a bit cheap and plastic-y due to the nature of the IP, but the kinetics may help quite a bit.
It was a very smart move. This release hit every music site out there, from Rolling Stone and Billboard to NME and Pitchfork. And of course, it blew up all the gamer sites.
I have been saying for years that I wished Universal would start bringing in EDM artists for Mardi Gras and their now defunct summer concert series. Universal fanbois kept telling me it would never happen. And guess what? Marshmello will be coming to Mardi Gras this year. And now this music video. The bad thing is, this is kind of proof that EDM is leaking into the main stream. And you know what it means when that happens. Time for a new type of counter culture music.
