New track for SM?

So are we thinking something along the lines of DL's SM? I will admit the darkness of the ride in Anaheim makes a huge difference as well as the smooth track.

According to Martin, the light bleed problem isn't as much due to the load area as it is the light from the lift scene... Which makes good sense.

But the article says they're planning on a new ceiling for the dome... Maybe in addition to the asbestos removal, they're figuring in the light bleed from the lift somehow.

asbestos removal??? Has the Disney Company even stated this as fact? Talk about a lawyers holiday of fun and money.

What he said.

I`ll wait for the covered load areas until I see it - this has changed 6 times in the past 6 months.

From what you heard were they just going to clone Disneyland's covered load area or create a new design? If there just gonna bring over a similar version to whats in california that will be highly lame.

So is your boycott of the parks ending late 09 / early 10?

It will end when I feel suffiecent improvements have been made.

I will say this though, the faster they make a new star tours adventure and expand DAK with a new land...the faster they start recieving my familys money again and get some good word of mouth from me.

If I may....
No. The load area will not be a "clone" of Disneyland's.
Couldn't be even if they wanted it to....structural differences and whatnot.

like lee said, DL's would not work for Disney World's because 1, we have 2 tracks and 2 everything is ground level unlike Disneyland's which is below ground level and you have to descend to get to it...

it could be similar, but not the same.

My prediction for the load areas: The ceiling will be above the TTA windows, so the ride will view into the loading area, not space.

My question for the load areas: How are they going to put a ceiling on that huge space and pull it off? A big flat ceiling would look terrible.

Are you happy with what got approved? You haven't commented about that and the scope of the project.

My sources have all led me to believe that the refurb will be at least 10 months.
Yes...there will be new track. Not necessarily all new track (I don't think) but a substantial amount.
There is a placeholder date of Nov. 21 for a reopening I have been hearing about. I don't buy it.

I don't buy it either.

I've been told they're looking at pushing this into 2010 with soft-opening as soon as February, but they definitely want it for the March-April spring break/Easter super busy period.

I was told there is a suspicion going around that that date was put out, so as to not have people who were wavering on holiday trips next year suddenly say 'that's the last straw, let's just wait until 2010' (seriously!)

Although, a caveat is we all know if Phil, Erin and crew had their way this rehab would last two weeks!

Kudo's to Lee and Martin for being right. And un-kudos to those who said SM was getting nothing more than glorified cleaning and maintenance.

Those un-kudos would be for me amongst others ... but based upon what was orignally proposed and based upon the fact they've still been cutting stuff from this, I feel safe in saying this is going to be not much more than the above.

This attraction needed a two-year top-to-bottom gutting and a new version (or versions since they have the space) built.

If A is the bare minimum, then we are getting B ... we should be getting X!

I've been following this SM rumor mill very closely across a number of sites over several months. Lee and Martin have been consistent in saying we were still getting a substantial refurb (but not the desired rebuild/overhaul) even when nearly every other source was talking about the project being axed or scaled down to nothing. There's a reason they have big time credibility here.

I guess the big question now is, how fluid is the situation regarding the scope of the refurb from this point forward. Are we definitely locked in, or are there things that could still be cut/added?

And I'm not trying to be a cynic here, but doesn't this "late 2009 opening (when we really mean spring 2010)" smell a lot like the handling of a certain geosphere's refurb. A year from now, are we all going to be complaining about an unfinished descent in one park and an unfinished lift in another? :lookaroun

things can be (and usually are) added and removed from major projects like this. It's clear that we will get a large-scale refurbishment, though--not as big as many would argue it should be, but this still has a substantial budget assigned.

Boy, wouldnt a curve HD led screen (much like the one in old vegas) that covers the load area have endless possibilites. A HD starfield with "real" cookies flying by, space craft and your occasional planet. It could be done for your average suit bonus check.

From page 2, not sure if it got over looked Question: Lee, is the lift hill getting the same love that BTMR go ton its refurb? A silent lift hill sure would be nice (IE: E:E... i havent ridden BTMR since the refurb so E:E is the only true example i have heard live)

BTMR's lifts are as quiet at EE's now? I had no idea...nice! Maybe you can hear the sound effects in the caves now...

Yes, it would.
In fact, if I remember correctly, that very thing was once proposed for Disneyland. It would have covered the entire Buzz/Star Tours corridor. Didn't happen.

A silent lift was part of the plan at one point. Unsure of where it now stands.

Ummm....kinda. I'm still waiting for a few more details before I fully get behind it. Still....it could have been much worse.

No, Disney hasn't said it straight out... But they never would. Asbestos removal isn't something they'd need to "announce", I wouldn't think.

Lee and a couple others have mentioned it was a big part of the initial work to be done though.

And it's well known that asbestos removal comprised a LOT of the initial work done within IASW too. That was part of the building process of those days. Makes sense.

That would have been impressive. Wasnt there rumors about that being in the final lift area of DL version as well?

that is frustrating if not. it would be more intense if it were silent and you heard all the music and sound effects instead of click-click-click-click-click-click-click-
