Brian on Fox and Friends this morning reported that Disney is shutting down Space Mountain so that Disney can replace the track. Please take with a grain of salt as I can't find any other reference to it anywhere else. But here is hoping.

I actually heard a short news clip on a local radio station this morning while I was getting ready for work! I didn't realize it was so newsworthy! They did say it will be reopened in late 2009....I hope that's not definite.

If the minimum 10 month refurb is true then it'll be open in 2010 although I wouldn't be surprised to see them try to rush it to be open for the Christmas rush at least.

The Orlando Sentinel is confirming the new track. There's an article about the refurb in today's (Jan 8) paper. Here's a quote about the other stuff

Other upgrades will include a new enclosure for the ride's queuing area and a new ceiling inside its signature white dome,

My sources have all led me to believe that the refurb will be at least 10 months.
Yes...there will be new track. Not necessarily all new track (I don't think) but a substantial amount.
There is a placeholder date of Nov. 21 for a reopening I have been hearing about. I don't buy it.

Kudo's to Lee and Martin for being right. And un-kudos to those who said SM was getting nothing more than glorified cleaning and maintenance.

Lee will this be the exact same type of track as was created in the 70's or might we be getting some upgrades with a stronger more weight supporting track with such marvels as oh lets say banked turns????

It's HarmonioUS, NOT HarmoniYOU.

Unsure. Depends on how much track they are gonna replace, and why they are replacing it. More complete info should be available in a few days.

Take all with a generous helping of salt, even the bad stuff that frequently gets splatted across the real information.

Now, let's just hope they can do this right...:sohappy:

I'm so excited to hear that SM is getting the refurb it deserves. Although it will be cool to ride on a (mostly) new track, I do enjoy the "out of control" feeling that the coaster currently has. Plus, screaming like a lunatic and wearing your sunglasses on the ride adds to the feeling as well.

Kudos for an enclosed boarding room, and new projections and such in the dome itself.

They said they are retaining many classic elements, so I hope this will include a freshening up of the star music, moog music, and preservation, but enhancement of the windows that look out into various scenes, as we have the only space mountain that does that in their queue, let alone its the original space mountain.

Anyone know if the post show is going to get some help? Any sponsors thinking about sponsoring the ride later on?

Has SM had a sponsor since RCA pulled out many years ago? I can't seem to remember if they have.

So many sponsors have pulled out of attractions over the years...

FedEx took over RCA's sponsorship, and they left around 2005 I think, and still, there is evidence of their sponsorship scattered around the area as of now.

According to the Sentinel, they're enclosing the que for sure. :sohappy:

Now... If we can get a few banked turns, some on board audio, new starfield effects, and a "not so 70's" lift scene... We're in business.

That is great news about the queue!! Though you won't be able to see the cars before riding anymore, the darker ride is just a superior trade-off IMO.

The pre-show was actually one of my all-time favorties, but I'm probably just nostalgic about another aspect of WDW again.

And thanks for the sponsorship info!
