News New Theater to be built at the Magic Kingdom - now cancelled?

These types of big theaters are expensive, and WDW has never attempted something like this before. They have a 2,000 seat Broadway-caliber theater at Disneyland Resort, the Hyperion Theatre, and it's impressive to see how much money they invest in lighting, sound, special effects, etc. Not to mention the higher caliber of stage talent they put into more lavish shows there.
Again, nothing like that exists in WDW. These types of Broadway-caliber facilities are very expensive to build from scratch.
While WDW has several theaters that can seat 1,000+ people, the scale and scope of this type of theater is on an entirely different level.
1,500 seat Finding Nemo - The Musical at WDW = Wooden benches on all one level, warehouse style building.
2,000 seat Hyperion Theatre at Disneyland Resort = Upholstered seats on four levels (Orchestra, Upper Orchestra, Mezzanine, Balcony)
As someone who sees a lot of Broadway shows, the Hyperion did a pretty good job replicating the feel of a professional theater minus the absenceof a true lobby. There is not a theater in Walt Disney world I would label Broadway caliber.

I'm personally glad this was cancelled ((hopefully)). The style of the building was completely out of place for MK. The concept art was unbelievably boring/ bland. The addition of a theatre doesn't excite me but if TDO wants to increase capacity at least assemble a design team with talent and originality please.

I was told it was cancelled due to it blocking an emergency vehicle route. Apparently Reedy Creek shut it down.

Not exactly. The project had many complications.
Plans show enough space for two firetrucks to fit side by side to get round it. The existing firelane wouldn't even have been blocked.

I haven't heard any actual numbers, but based on it's size I would think it would have been similar to the Hyperion at DCA which seats around 2000.

Indeed and this is one of the reasons they're regretting, to some extent, the Frozen show addition in Anaheim. It doesn't have much of a repeat value for many guests given its length, Frozen saturation and the younger-skewing story. Aladdin, for some of its stale aspects, kept things fresh and repeatable thanks to a lot of room for ad libs, particularly by the Genie. The length also made it a perfect break from the park without committing to a full 60+ minute show.

Personally, I'm in the upper section of being middle aged, and the looping coaster has more appeal to me.
