The imagery being shared here of Space Mountain being dismantled really got me thinking about the state of things in the domestic parks. Space Mountain is in my Top 3 attractions and the thought of seeing it be dismantled puts a knot in my stomach.
-and yet, I see these images coming out of Tokyo and it doesn't happen. Do I think the original exterior is iconic and will I miss it? Yes. But I think my reaction (or lack thereof) comes from actually having faith in the decision making of Tokyo Disneyland leadership. As the old Space Mountain is dismantled, I see this brand new one that pays homage the original rising to take its place. One that will likely be better maintained than ours and just all around better in every other possible way. Because Tokyo has shown us time and again, that is just how they roll.
I really wish I had this level of faith in the leadership of the domestic parks. When Tokyo announces they are going to
close freaking Space Mountain, a thought that almost melts my mind, I happily accept it because they have that level of equity with me. They are no doubt going to bring this classic attraction into the future, the right way, so that it can continue to make Guests happy for years to come.
But if this were announced stateside, my mind would immediately go straight to things like GotG - Mission: Cashgrab and that miserable barn being built outside the Haunted Mansion. Is there a chance it could end up good like the newly constructed Mansion queue? It's
possible. But the fact that it feels like a gamble of long odds that things will turn out okay
and I have to worry at all about Space being cheaply converted into some IP-driven sh*tshow? Really makes me wish I could just be excited about stuff when Disney makes an announcement over here. I wish they were just better at their jobs here. I wish they were more like Tokyo.
