News New security measures

I have no problem with that. I'd rather be safe then some yahoo running around the Magic Kingdom with an AK-47 and grenades.

:) :) :) .... The grenades might get through - but an AK? Even the pistol version is pretty large :). No.... the real problem would be a bomb vest, under a "costume". I will not elaborate as to what "costume" means - that's up to WDW. I WILL say that the wording of the new rule may very well be VERY wise.

As the events in Paris today prove, screening does serve a purpose. After reading a lot of comments in this thread you world think these security measures never work. Nothing is 100% effective but they do serve a purpose and they do work. The question is whether it is worth the hassle and expense.

It should be noted that there is a difference between how things are done in DLP and WDW/DLR. At DLP, every bag is sent through an x-ray to be scanned, like at the airport. Not just for those going into Disney Village or the parks, but all the hotels too. That's how this guy was caught.

However, even after the attacks I don't believe DLP is sending people through metal detectors (random or not).

You know what's funny?
That in the middle is the xray machine you put your bags in to get to the parks area at DLP. Not sure what the hotel machines look like...maybe similar??

DLP have had X Ray machines for all bags for at least five years now. It doesn't seem to bother anyone, and today they actually served a very real purpose. I welcome any move that makes our parks safer.

I think we will see something like this, in addition to other new security measures, in the US parks sometime soon. The problem of course is that in Paris they can do it because no one visits that park. I couldn't imagine the lines for something like this at wdw during Christmas or spring break.

Yeah even if they just put everyone through the metal detectors let alone the bag x-ray machines you'd be looking at 30 minute plus waits.

I think it's possible to not be bothered by the actual check at the metal detector but the idea of it. Sure it's no big deal, but it serves no purpose and unnecessarily inconveniences you. To me it's equivalent to a straight section of road with no intersections adding a red light at a random spot. Is stopping for one minute going to really hurt anyone probably not, but you can bet something like that would get huge public opposition.

Some people go through the world needing to know the reason behind why something is done rather than just ignorantly going through life thinking everything thrown at them must be for their own good.

To say it serves no purpose is just your opinion, not a fact. To me that is silly.

Clearly you don't know me if you think I'm "ignorantly going through life thinking everything thrown at me must be for my own good." LOL. I'll fight anything and everything that deserves a fight. This doesn't.

Gotta say, this "security" is ridiculous, they essentially just pull whatever single male walks through the non-bad check lines and call it a day. Very annoying as I got pulled in the "scanner" at every park I went to. I know its been mentioned before, but this is simply in place to show that they did something to "step-up" security.

On a side note, it wouldn't take much for an evildoer to conduct evil acts anywhere in WDW, think of all the transportation thats not secure, Monorails/Buses/Boats... all along the back of World drive, heck you can through a rock and hit space mountain from World Drive. If Disney is really serious about the security of the Parks, they will address this huge gaps in security as well.

Yes, and then no one will complain about the "ruined experiences." LOL.

If you think it serves a purpose that is your opinion. While I find it hard to believe anyone could come to this conclusion, I certainly respect your opinion. Ultimately the true purpose of this is to make those who think this adds an element of security feel safer, apparently it is at least working in that regard.

It's like having an alarm sign on your front lawn. There is a certain percentage of potential robbers who will just go to the next house rather than take the chance. That is a measurable increase in safety, whether you want to admit it or not. Same scenario here with the metal detectors. Guaranteed it will deter some people. Possibly it will catch some idiots. I suspect it will be more effective against stupid Americans than organized terrorists, but I'm happy to keep out some stupid Americans. And if it's one more potential barrier for the terrorists, great. Slow them down.

There is never an implied promise or expectation that it will prevent every offense. I am perfectly realistic. It bugs me when people just casually dismiss the entire thing out of hand as if they know everything and are experts when they are nobody.
