News New security measures

No, because it is possible to conceal the gun elsewhere or just shoot the security and keep walking as happened at LAX. There are also plenty of other weapons that are not metal.
Well all of this but more importantly going through a metal detector to enter the park isn't required. It's random, so if anyone is going to bring one the likelihood is low that they will be selected. If they are selected they can just try again.

What safety component? These types of check points have no meaningful success.

Based on what criteria? We already know the prior security system stopped tons of contraband. Just because something isn't 100% doesn't mean it doesn't add value or serve a purpose.

Do you also find community policing, traffic enforcement, and other forms of 'show of force' lacking 'any meaningful success' as well?

You seriously think a person walking away vs accepting being scanned isn't going to catch the attention of Disney Security and not note their appearance for returns?

This theory in this thread that you can just decline and there are zero consequences is humorous.

How about the woman who has to disclose a medical device to a male attendant in full view of other people just to walk into an amusement park with her grandchildren and is embarrassed to do so?

(Woman approaches security post)
Woman: "I have a medical device that will set off the detectors."
Security: "Thank you."
(Scans woman and woman enters park)

Easy. ;)

I knew of a woman years ago who used a breast prosthesis that included some metal that could set off detectors. How do you "respectfully" embarrass her?

(Woman approaches security post)
Woman: "I have a medical device in my chest that will set off the detectors."
Security: "Thank you."
(Scans woman and woman enters park)

Easy. ;)

What about the young woman who feels profoundly uncomfortable having her body under scrutiny-even in a seemingly benign way-by the same male guard?

(Woman approaches security post)
Woman: "I have a medical device in my chest that will set off the detectors."
Security: "Thank you. Nancy! Would you come over here to take care of this female. Thanks."
(Woman scans woman and woman enters park)

Easy. ;)

Putting people's bodies under scrutiny-in front on their kids, no less-is far different than checking bags and for some is one intrusion too many considering the activity in question.

Welcome to the world in which we live. If you are embarrassed by going through something like this in front of your children then you should probably not travel.

Teaching them this is normal is ok?

Again, welcome to the world in which we live. Yes. It is normal.

What happens if a gun gets past random screening, which it surely can? Admit it's a waste of time? No, of course not, they'll amp it up to something else. The point is where does it end?

Maybe they will go to something else, but to act like they are going to go to full cavity searches is pretty extreme thinking. After all, that is along the way things are going in your perspective.

I'd rather try to take a stand now-even against a few people being harassed needlessly-then progress to a world where freedom of movement without "harassment" is a thing of the past.

Let us know how that works out. While you fight the good fight I will comply and simply walk through a stupid metal detector and/or get wanded then go enjoy a theme park. We don't live in the 1800's. This is the reality that we DO live in. We as a people have created this reality by doing stupid crap like:
Los Angeles Times bombing
Wall Street bombing
Unabomber attacks
Attacks by the Jewish Defense League
Oklahoma City bombing
Centennial Olympic Park bombing
Wisconsin Sikh temple shooting
Southern California shootings
Boston Marathon bombing
Charleston South Carolina Church shooting
San Bernardino shooting

And those are just the people in THIS country trying to kill us. ;)

You shout from the rooftops about the injustice of someone daring to scan you for metal. I'm going to go ride something. :D

It's only humorously because it highlights just how ineffective the security measures are.

You keep referring to these "consequences" but have yet to explain anything Disney could do. There simply are no options available to them other than just deny entrance.

So if a person wanted to get a weapon in the park they could stuff a compact 9mm into their bra, then (approach security post)
Woman: "I have a medical device in my chest that will set off the detectors"
Security: "Thank you."
(Scans woman and woman enters park)

Easy. ;)

Because that wouldn't compute with G00fyDad's agenda/understanding of the world.
Well possibly but I am genuinely curious. My understanding of this scenario in the context of what's being discussed here is that when someone notifies them of a metal medical device they simply use the wand over the rest of the body assuming metal will be in the area indicated. I don't have any first hand experience of this exact scenario.

Of course all that is assuming the person is selected in the first place, which odds seem to be against that happening anyway.

Seems like it would work to me. Why wouldn't it?

Medical implant metal is stainless steel. It can be set to sound off to gun metal as opposed to internal body implant metal. They both may give a warning but the implant would be noticeably different.

That seems reasonable. Of course it assumes the people there know hot to operate and understand the machines.

I do think if someone were going to try to bring something in they would simply avoid the metal detectors altogether or hide it in something that isn't searched.

Logic.. fail

But whatever.. for anyone who fears the trauma of going through a security screening.. please stay away. You wouldn't even be able to GOTO WORK at many places in this town if this experience makes you that uncomfortable. It's drama over nothing. Stop being so fragile.

To those who fear being killed in a terrorist attack, please stay home instead. Then we won't need to have ineffective security measures to mollify the paranoid. You're more likely to be crushed by furniture than you are to be killed by a terrorist. Maybe Disney should remove all the furniture from their hotel rooms too. Everyone can just sleep in sleeping bags. You're more likely to die of a heart condition, maybe Disney should require doctor's notes before letting you on property.

The reality is that a terrorist is not going to let these types of security measures stop them. Yet innocent people are being harassed and subjected to searches simply to appease fear mongerers or the overly paranoid. It doesn't matter how little time it takes or even how customer friendly the staff is. It is still an invasion. I'm happy for yopu that you don't mind being subjected to a search. I do mind. And while I stopped visiting WDW 2 years ago for other reasons, this nonsense would be a reason for me to consider not going.

Guns and knives are made of many different types of metals....including stainless steel. And dont forget 3-D printers. So how will the "lady walking up to security" scenario play out now?
