New nighttime show 'Rivers of Light' confirmed to be coming to Disney's Animal Kingdom

I hope that the lighting for the Tree of Life is more than a projection, from the point of view that installing a physical lighting package on the tree would be an excellent time to do a full refurbishment so that the nets can be removed and pathways reopened. I can dream.

I now realize that all that emergency work on the ToL may have been a secret plot all along. And the critics here complaining about the netting sure look silly now.

They have previously operated a nighttime version of Kilimanjaro. It used lighting rigs on the trucks. It was actually a very neat experience, complete with an all new storyline and a guide along with the driver. I got to experience this in late 1999.

Unless they add hyenas I will be disappointed.

While I have not seen Avatar nor do I really have any interest in this type of theming for a land (I think Disney is trying to bank on a film that possibly in 10 years will not be relative anymore. Avatar is NOTHING like the HP franchise) I do think they can do some really cool things with this land, new parade and show. when I read this I was finally excited about something Disney had planned. EE was the last thing that made me think, wow, cool. The new parade at MK (yawn, though it is needed) and FLE (meh, it's needed as well though) were nice but AK definitely cries for some help and I'm glad it's going to be getting the plussing it so desperately needs!

My Last visit to the Animal Kingdom park was great. We had some really nice meals that we never had before. We as always enjoyed all the animals and enjoyed a few shows that we never stopped to take the time to watch. The animal Kingdom is really a beautiful and unique park and I am glad that they will be doing something different other than fireworks that would stress out the animals. Music, lanterns and images with a safari ride to boot would truly be a great addtion and experience. Now this to me is good news and I do look forward to seeing this. Looks like we will be staying at the Animal Kingdom longer than normal.

Could this show open next year?
I would imagine it won't open until Avatarland does. This really needs to be a package deal where guests have a reason to actually stay in DAK after 4 pm. As the park is currently set up, guests would be left to wander around aimlessly until the water starts spraying in the river.

Not necessarily. People could park hop, spending the morning/ afternoon in DHS or one of the water parks, and then jaunt over to AK for the show.

Reasonable statement, but I don't think they'll wait until 2017 to open this. That's so far away for something that they could open sooner and get some buzz. Especially since they'll need to advertise something as "new and exciting" in 2015-16.

I'd really like to see the night time stuff open in 2015 with some smaller attractions (even if it's just some flat rides a la A Bug's Land).

They really should consider (if they aren't) running with the night show and entertainment ASAP. I mean, what happens if they do get rid of the parade? People flock out anyway afterwards so if there's no parade, then what? Folks leave at Noon instead of 4:45? They NEED to debut it sooner.

However, they really need to refurbish the Tree of Life, too.

It's so sad to list things wrong with every park. It goes on forever. Sigh.

The Bugs land from DCA should have replaced HISTK play area years ago (even though I personally like it for nostalgia reasons). Although it fits AK too, considering it's tough to be a bug! is in the Tree. DHS has missed the boat in SO many ways. It's really really sad. It has SO much potential and the Pixar overlays seem just SO perfect for the park, even if you aren't a Pixar fan. But not to get too OT ....

This is the same company that hasn't added anything real to DAK since 2007. I think they'll be fine with waiting til 2017. We still have the largest expansion in MK history opening next year......................that should tide us over to the largest expansion in DAK history in 2017 (as if that is an impressive statement).

it will be interesting to see the pattern of movement of people when all this opens by 2017....crazy to think people will be jetting over to AK around 6/7....better increase their food options in regard to TS restaurants

What I like about what I am seeing and hearing is you don't have to be an Avatar movie fan to be blown away and enjoy what they may build in AK - (I've never seen it and have no desire to honestly).

I also think they may be onto something here with the night time safari ride... how many other attractions are Disney are different during the day v/s at night?

If they open up the night entertainment, tree lights/projections, and this new night safari attraction before Pandora opens... I can see AK staying open later past dark anyways.
