New nighttime show 'Rivers of Light' confirmed to be coming to Disney's Animal Kingdom

What I like about what I am seeing and hearing is you don't have to be an Avatar movie fan to be blown away and enjoy what they may build in AK - (I've never seen it and have no desire to honestly).

I also think they may be onto something here with the night time safari ride... how many other attractions are Disney are different during the day v/s at night?

If they open up the night entertainment, tree lights/projections, and this new night safari attraction before Pandora opens... I can see AK staying open later past dark anyways.

The problem is at that point instead of people coming to the park early and checking out before lunch, they'll come 4 hours before closing do the rides and check out with the night time entertainment. You need at 20-25 rides and shows in the park before people will actually class DAK as a full day park and change their habits to reflect that. Currently we are at 11 with it going up to 13, in 2017.

i think WDW is hoping the get a day back from Universal that they lost not so much about park hoppers as people staying all day
hopefully when DAk and DHS get their mini make overs

The point is when the view is changed to do DHS in the morning and DAK in the evening, the people in the US who go for 4 days will get all Disney stuff done in 3 days and go to Uni for the day. I don't anyone who spends more than 4 hours in either DHS or DAK. To prevent guest loss, Disney needs around 20-25 rides and shows in DAK - it doesn't matter if they are park hoping or day guests you want everyone who turns up to the park not want to leave.

Well it would be good if they had a day time parade and a night time show at the same time. They could even make the parade earlier (say 1pm) to try to encourage people to be at DAK longer.

It was never intended to be that sort of park. The designers intended the animal exhibits and trails as attractions, and it's very unlikely there will ever be 20-25 rides and shows in addition to them.

No attractions are rides/shows no matter which theme park your in whether its Busch Gardens to Seaworld to DAK. The trails and exhibits are distractions nothing more nothing less ... sure they are nice but once you see one *insert animal* you have seen them all.

OK, but then you obviously aren't the sort of guest they had in mind in designing the park.

Nah its more a crapshoot, ya know running over budget not nearly enough attractions to open with of course they are going to say the distractions are attractions - it is like how they now state meet and greets are attractions.

Really? My DW enjoys the shows, but her primary reason for going to AK is for the animals. Every time we visit we do the trails at least once, and have spent at least 30+ mins multiple times watching the Gorillas.

Maybe because as a youngster I spent time looking at animals at Zoos, especially Edinburgh Zoo as such they have easily lost the draw for DAK, it desperately needs multiple rides and shows.

I agree that DAK needs more rides and shows, but I think you are being overly dismissive of the live animal aspect of DAK. People do like going to zoos and they are an important part of the DAK experience. We always make it a point to walk the trails and see the animals and I think that add a different quality to DAK versus the other WDW parks. I mean, plenty of people make it a point to visit their local zoo to only see animals, so why would that not be something of interest in WDW as part of the full vacation experience?

That said, I agree that they should be looking to add rides in addition to the Avatar ones. Whether adding another new land or putting more stuff in existing lands, there needs to be more things to do. Personally, I'd like to see them keep the daytime parade and add the night time water show and night safaris, plus add on some smaller rides (dark rides or fla rides) in the short term. This would help them justify the longer hours.

yeah im not spending 100.00 to go to a zoo...it needs more

not that the animal stuff isnt really cool but its still a theme park with animals as a theme
I didn't realize it was a zoo.

And no one here is dumb enough to pay $100/day for even the Magic Kingdom. With my Annual Pass, I'm paying about $30/day when I go to the parks. Even DAK is worth $30/day.......

It is an idea they have toyed with before but never really succeeded. Back in the day the CircleVision theaters of Tomorrowland would run a morning and evening show. Night safaris have been tried in the past. At Disneyland the Pirates of the Scaribbean and Rock It Mountain were proposed night time versions of Pirates of the Caribbean and Space Mountain. The Rock It Mountain project was so far along that one can see on the marquee the fiber optics where "ROCK IT" would have replaced "SPACE." And now early next year the Jungle Cruise at Tokyo Disneyland will reopen with night and day versions.
