Does anyone else miss the days when the "insiders" didn't always come and rain on the parade with news of budgetary cuts and changes from the original concept?

No offense to Martin at all but I think we all "get it" now as far as WDW business outlook and don't need constant reminding. Rivers of Light will still probably end up being a very good show and I hate to muddle up the next couple years discussing the what could have been. Those things are fun to know years down the line after an attraction debuted. We would be able to judge the attraction for what is in front of us first and then gain perspective if former plans were leaked. By this current format we end up judging the attraction years before it opens and it is a clouded one. I would much prefer the "insiders" to clue us on what is coming and not focus so much on what could've been. Again I think most of us get it by now.

Off soapbox... ; )

That's a great way to look at the situation. While @marni1971's words definitely make me (and many others) quite sad, I am stil excited for this addition. I too was expecting a version of WoC, but I am still excited for whatever we are getting. Seeing the Tree of Life come alive with lights and glowing in the dark, floating lanterns, a nice music score, projections, LIVE music... It will still be awesome, I'm sure about that.

Yes there is.

I can't see how this information offers that opinion unless you're trying just to pretend otherwise.

When the site owner confirms major cut backs I will believe it. Meanwhile big cranes are featured on the front page today. TTBaB in an indoor attraction. So I assume this is for the new outdoor show. :cat:

I expect to see elements of WoC, Fantasmic!, Illumination and Mythica (TDS) in Rivers of Light -- obviously with an animal & nature theme. I do not know what the quality will end up being like, but based on what people are saying, it doesn't seem like it can be pingeonholed into a copy of any other specific Disney show.

I'm quite optimistic that it will be a solid addition.

I agree with @rioriz -- I'm more concerned about what is coming than what might have been cut. Everything that gets built is going to have scrutiny by the higher ups who are going to cut budgets when they can. It's the nature of the beast.

That said....

Maybe I'm missing something, but WoC isn't an "in the round" show, is it? Don't they shut down most of Paradise Pier for the show and have all of the viewing areas on the one side of the lagoon? I've envisioned Rivers of Light to be somewhat similar by having a viewing area at Asia (and Dinoland apparently) that faces one direction with a lit Tree of Light being part of the backdrop (much like the Fun Wheel is a backdrop for WoC).

Aren't there going to be projections on water screens for this show? Wouldn't they by nature face a specific direction?

WoC is designed to be viewed primarily from one direction, it's seating area runs parallel to the where the fountains and mist screens are setup. The mist screens are the main reason for that single direction, they would be hard to see if you were off to the sides.

No it isn't. That's why I said this would have been the ideal opportunity to do it. IllumiNations did it. Tokyos Fantasmic does it.
I wonder what that would have meant for folliage at DAK, though. So many trees would have to be removed (and we know how folks feel about Disney trees).

That said, to me, if anywhere can spare some trees, it's DAK. And World Showcase...

Does Steve really do that? I've always known this site to deal in fact on the main page. Something I personally value as an asset to the site. Unlike others, Steve only posts info on the main page that is fact-based, "this is what's being built" and "this is when." Chit-chat over supposed cuts is left to the boards, where it belongs. Other sites deal more in the wishy-washy and therefore post incorrect information far more often than this site.

Steve would likely never post something like that, which works out great for JT since he can't be proven wrong.

No it isn't. That's why I said this would have been the ideal opportunity to do it. IllumiNations did it. Tokyos Fantasmic does it. CineSpec invented phase reversed video where one screen can show the same image on both sides without a mirror image.

OK, I see what you are saying. Conceptually, sure, it would be nice to have a show that can be viewed all around. But the downside to that would be the need to clear a lot of trees around the water to be able to view the show, which can have detrimental effects on sightlines between lands and the general ambiance. Then again, building a large seating area on the banks of the water ain't exactly ideal either -- I hope they are executed in a way to not be an eyesore. The upside to a 360 degree show IMHO would be better crowd control since people would disperse different directions after it ends; there would also be room for more people to watch the show, I would imagine.

Still, the quality of the show isn't dependent IMHO on being something that is large and can be seen all around. It seems that they want the show to face a specific direction and have the ToL (and effects on it) be part of the backdrop; that doesn't necessarily sound like a bad decision to me. It still comes down to the execution of the show which hopefully will be of good quality (what they did with FOF gives me hope).

I did read guest don't like seeing these big bulky barges during the daytime as they just sit in the lagoon..I'm not sure if they are moveable..

Exactly. I have the same thought seeing the globe in the middle of WS lagoon in the early evening. DCA figured out how to stage these shows correctly.

Which brings up a curiosity in regards to RoL. I've been under the impression that whatever barges are used will be moved in and out daily and not be moored in the lagoon. Does anyone know for sure?

I'd prefer them being moved so they don't cause a visual intrusion during the day, but I can understand if that might be costly. Also, permanent fixtures there would mean that the river would not be used for transportation and I'm really hoping they bring back the Discovery River boats in the future for transportation purposes (i.e. like the boats at Epcot in WS).

I'm curious, looking at the concept art it looks as if the water screens will be on the middle boat while the 2 other boats uses their sails as screens...I posted a question in regards if they were going to make an infastructure ala WoC but many said that's not what they are doing...It looks like that water can spray from the middle boat...I could be wrong..

The hard part about the DCA system is that it would likely require them to drain that body of water to install it.
