Do you know what met the ax? I think it's a rather impressive show (then again, I've only seen video) but wonder what it could have been.

@marni1971 Can you please write a Disney Parks: What Could Have Been coffee table book for the rest of the class? :)

I know there was going to be a Chernabog effect that was actually installed but they never got it working.

Bob wanted more Pixar and what was current in the show. Some of the classic scenes were tooled down or taken out.

Unlike Rivers of Light, development of World of Color was easily seen, photographed, and recorded from around the Disneyland Resort. Here's a video of one of the early versions, recorded about 2 months before the show debuted:

Some of the noteworthy changes that took place along the way:
  • Restructuring of the show, and rearranging the order of segments
  • Removing the show's original 'host' character, an orange water droplet named Little Squirt
  • Completely removing an Alice segment that had been the primary focus of most of the pre-opening sneak peeks and was even included on early merchandise (evidence of which has mysteriously vanished from the web, including the video that had been on this Disney Parks Blog page https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2010/03/paper-may-fold-into-the-waters-of-world-of-color/)
  • Extension of the Aladdin segment and addition of Friend Like Me
  • Removal of Go the Distance (around 11:45 in the video)
  • Extension of The Little Mermaid segment (and removal of nearly all of the paper cut-out animation)
  • Removal of the Chernabog effect that @danlb_2000 mentioned (visible to the right of the Golden Zephyr tower, beginning around 18:30)
  • General shift from focus on fountains to stronger focus on water screens throughout the show
And for comparison, the version of the show that the public saw when it first opened:

Additionally, the show continued to change far more than any other big nighttime show ever did, including inserting lots of segments to tie into current film releases (Brave, Tron, Pirates 4, etc). The extended Pirates segment ultimately replaced Hellfire, which was a big downgrade in my book. The montage at the end was also modified several times to slow it down to make it easier to see which characters were appearing (which surely meant that several got cut at various points).

Of the public versions of the show, I think the premiere version was the best. It had plenty of issues (long dialogue segments and bad transitions) that didn't get fixed with the later changes, but seemed to be the tightest production in general. The current Celebrate show is dreadful. It seems like Rivers of Light is going to avoid dialogue and existing IP entirely, so hopefully it avoids most of the traps that the various WOC shows have fallen into

I feel like Disney won't give us an update on Rivers of Light, just yet. I feel like their "update" was announcing this Jungle Book show.

As badly as I want RoL to open in July like what was rumored, I'm thinking those who heard Fall are correct. Disney specifically said Jungle Book will last through the summer and I highly doubt they would have went to all the trouble creating JB just for one month. Then add to that the dining packages being available for JB until September... We will see what happens and I suppose things could change but, it just doesn't look promising for RoL this summer :-(.

Is RoL still being promoted for this summer? or was all that removed?

Cant have too much trouble cosndiering how fast it was done. Plus they only went to any trouble at all for the sake of having a show offering during the nighttime.

If Jungle Book is received relatively well, my guess is that they'll milk it through the summer even if RoL is technically ready sooner. The DVD is rumored to come out in July, so I'm sure they'd love to tie that in for a month or two. Why open it late this summer when you can gain another "new" option for next summer to go along with Avatar? Not saying it will take that long to open, but fall may make more sense now.

I think this is an unintended benefit to RoL as guests will first see an inferior show that will help set expectations a tad lower than the other parks' offerings. As great as I think RoL will be, there will likely be guests who are underwhelmed when they come in looking for a fireworks show.

Either way (JB or ROL), I wish they would open up the reservation window and extended park hours past 5 September so that I can complete my trip planning. Right now the park hours still show my planned day at AK (16 Sept) closing @ 5:00 PM. I am hoping to see/experience AK at night regardless of which show is available and plan Fastpass for night rides on KS and EE. I guess all I can do is keep checking daily and hope the calendar opens up...and that I can get dinner show and desired Fastpass reservations for that date before they are gone.

Disney will announce when ROL is opening, when they're ready. And I'm sure like they did for Jungle Book they'll give a days notice for FPs & dining.
