If Bombardier has so much work why are they in such financial trouble?

Bombardier has a major cash flow problem. Their costs are very high and haven’t figured a way to turn things around as part of 5 year turn around plan. They’re not making money on anything they sell to offset expenses. They have sold off product lines (CS 300/A220) laid off employees and sold facilities (Toronto plant).

Are they in charge of ongoing maintenance for their trains currently in use or are those duties 100% handed over to the respective transportation authorities? Sounds like they could uses a couple on-going steady contracts.

It seems like it’s worse than that, even though they have a multi billion dolllar backlog on orders, for each unit of product they produce they are loosing money on or not making enough on it. Most of these are also fixed contracts where the prices have already been negotiated.

It seems like maybe forcing a ongoing maintenance contract would be beneficial for them. I know not every city is building a Monorail but they have pretty much a monopoly on the market and it's sounding like poor management is the iceberg that's sinking them.

Generally, it depends on the contract. Some units are handed off to the respective buyer with no ongoing obligations. These are generally legacy systems that have a history of maintaining their own rolling stock, for example the NYC subway, Toronto subway and streetcars and WDW monorail. Other units may include rolling stock maintenance, many UK mainline passenger trains have maintenance contracts included. Extending on that, some entire systems are maintained by Bombardier, such as many of their airport people movers, where they are responsible for rolling stock, tracks and guideways, and signals.

In other areas, Bombardier may maintain and operate systems that they didn't build. Toronto's commuter rail system trains are maintained and driven/staffed by Bombardier, and while Bombardier or their predecessors did build the cars, the locomotives aren't a Bombardier product. A similar arrangements exists for Orlando's SunRail, portions of Maryland's MARC, Sprinter and Coaster in California, and other Light Rail systems in the US. In Ottawa, Bombardier is responsible for maintenance of 6 LRT trains that were built by their competitor Alstom.

M&O seems to be a growing business for them, but like all outsourced contracts, there's a risk of it being a race to the bottom and the contractor not making any money.

He seems to have calmed down recently...but only a matter of time before another crazy flare up. It is okay to be a crazy genius, not okay to be a crazy CEO/Chairman of a company that employs thousands.
"Calm down" I think not :p The job opening is gone so either he got someone for the job or he was forced to take it down. It was up when he Tweeted it.

I wish I could be modern day Howard Hughes.
