New MARVEL attractions to Disney Parks

Why not? So its talked about in other forums, boards, whatever- so.
Its not like you have to read EVERY thread that comes up. If you see 2, 3, 4, or 4 million threads about the same thing, then just stick with the one you like. Why get upset about something like that?

I'm not upset. It's just a waste. We all know what the deal is.

Ok, well, whats it a waste of? It may not be necessary to have a couple threads talk about the same thing or something similar, but if there are, so what? I'm just trying to understand why its apparently a big deal.

Of course, everyone has the right to feel the way they do.

Yes, Universal has an exclusivity agreement with Marvel/Disney. It has no end date and covers pretty much all the major Marvel characters.

Without having the list of characters, would Black Widow, Hawkeye and Nick Fury still be held to the "exclusive" agreement? They weren't used as characters at Universal during the first 2 years of the deal. I'm not familiar with the Avangers behind recent history, were those characters always considered part of the "Avengers Family"?

From the contract, and my limited knowledge, it seems those three characters are fair game and could be used at WDW.

A few thoughts:
  • I would expect this overseas before I would expect it stateside
  • This is a no brainer
  • Due to the existing contract between Marvel and Universal, none of these characters are eligible for use in Florida
  • I wouldn't be surprised to see this in Disneyland instead of DCA
  • Evidently, Universal is somewhat prepared for Spiderman to be converted to Transformers with the upgraded projectors, and water and fire elements on the Hollywood version of Transformers being in similar spots in the attraction as the Florida/Spiderman version. To me this means that Universal has a price.
  • I'm curious if Disney could negotiate for just The Avengers characters. This would require a re-theme of The Hulk and some signage changes but beyond that should be easier than acquiring everything.

Big question though is "Does Comcast have a price for selling JUST the marvel rights"?

The value of those rights just went way up this weekend, so I would have to put it around $250 million or so ( Spiderman itself cost $100 million to develop ).

For just $1750 million more you could just buyout the parks and get Harry Potter at no extra cost ;).

Never mind. After doing a wiki search, I see they were part of the "Avengers Family". Bummer.

I'm actually surprised Disney didn't have Marvel design a new character or two for the movie just so they could have the rights to them. Heck, Hawkeye doesn't resemble the Hawkeye from the comic books. They should've changed his name and called him a new character!

Disney owns Marvel – they just don't own the theme park rights for any theme park east of the Mississippi.

But yes, I'm sure the cost of those rights just went up tenfold. I'm really surprised Iger didn't get those rights secured by now. For all we know though, he tried and could have been rejected by the board (which wouldn't surprise me in the least).

Given that Orlando doesn't have a Transformers attraction planned, I'd be very surprised if the ultimate plan isn't for Superhero Island to get a Transformers overlay. It seems to me it'd be a relatively painless transition for them.

I've heard this thrown around a lot...and it just wouldn't work. Yes, there are some scenes that are similar between TF/SM...But TF is a two level attraction with elevator scenes that aren't possible in Spider-man.

The attraction would lose a lot moving it over and trying to shoehorn it into the Spider-man building. I'd expect something from TF to replace T-2 in Universal before looking at Spider-man.

No less than a billion IMO. You don't just gift away content to a creatively starved WDI to fix a stale DHS which you are in direct competition with. Universal needs enough from the deal to redo Superhero Island and build more attractions to compete with what Disney would add to DHS. Universal really has no incentive to make this deal. They are no longer cash strapped, and I'm sure they're enjoying the free Marvel publicity.

Here's my take on it:

Usually, if there are dozens of thread on the same topic, I could care less, and I'll even post that if someone brings it up. I think the thing with Marvel is, many of us simply don't see it as having much of anything to do with WDW. Yes, Disney owns Marvel, but they also own ABC and ESPN, yet we don't see countless threads (Thank God) about those 2.

Yes, it's great for Disney that The Avengers is a hit, but these boards should be about all things WDW. There are specific forums to discuss movies and the like.

Just my 2 cents.:)

The success of the Avengers has, and I hate to say it, caught Disney with their pants down.

What we are looking at is a possible 1.5 billion dollar movie they are now developing into a franchise, which has to force Disney into playing hardball with getting Marvel characters into Disney World. I feel, and still do Disney would accomplish this, but now they are forced to, contract or not.

Disney World is the crown jewel of all Disney theme parks and I would fearlessly guess it makes more money than all the other Disney Parks combined, now Disney is forced to get Marvel there.

Jimmy Thick-If they do, Disney will kill it, Iam totally confident.

Good point, this is not a WDW thread. All Avenger threads should be religated to movies,DL or other park threads.

Not that I really mind:lookaroun

Hell has frozen over, as I agree with Jimmy.:animwink:

However, there's a backlash to this as well. I don't think we're in any danger of Marvel not being popular any time soon. However, most Disney purists (and there are many) will not be happy to see Marvel characters or attractions in the park.
