New Living Character Meet and Greets being tested at DL

This is so awesome!

I wonder if they just have a voice translator? Did anyone else get shocked when he repeated her name (Margaret)? From that point I knew it couldn't be just a bunch of pre-recorded tracks.

According to another website, this test is in preparation for the new M&G being specificly built for something like this in the Expo Hall on MSUSA at MK. I love this tech like you wouldn't imagine. When I first saw the moving mouth and eyes on Timon in FotLK, I instantly thought if this tech could be applied to every M&G character. I can't wait to see it in action.

Also, in regards to that quote, they won't stop something as big of a breakthrough as this (especially if they've spent lots of $$$ on it) just because someone posted a video on YouTube. And according to another site, they didn't sign NDA, but they signed for something else. If anything, the YouTube video might get pulled.

My first thought was "this is creepy" but the truth is that it is because outside of seeing this in the occasional show, we are simply not used to it. It is very, very cool. I can only imagine what kids think with they hear Mickey say their name in response.

I hope this continues to be developed and deployed, someday we'll think of our current non-talking characters as weird and creepy, just like when we see pictures and footage of the original characters that lived in Disneyland when it first opened.

Holy crap! This is so cool! I can't believe how interactive it is! I mean, it's like so "real" for lack of a better word. VERY impressive tech.

At first I thought his speech was pre-recorded, but when he said the people's names I got really impressed. Hope to see this in WDW soon.

It could be hard to do this in character meals though.

I thought that this was pretty incredible when I saw the video earlier. You would have to expect that if this actually does happen on a regular basis that all the characters would ultimately be outfitted like this. It would be hard to justify being able to speak to some and not others. It will take many years for this to happen, but i think that in time it will be the norm for meeting a character.

Too cool. Of course, the reaction will be different between children, ranging from "Yea! Mickey!" to "AAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

All depends on the kid.

Too true.

However, some WDW Entertainment CM's have already expressed hatred towards this on Facebook, thinking that it might severely limit the possibilities for spontaneous character animation when doing sets.

I also think that they'll only do this with more major characters (like Mickey and the rest of the Fab 5, etc.), not so much with more secondary ones. And even then, I can only see them doing this in enclosed/indoor limited-access meet-and-greet sets/locations (like in Mickey's House at DL) and not do it in outdoor locations where it would be more difficult to do anyway.

It would seem to be similar technology as MILF and TTWC.

The thing is, I don't know how they would be able to get this to work outside
I must be missing something completely obvious, so I'll go ahead and look like a moron and just ask:

What is the difference everyone (but me) is picking up on between inside and outside M&Gs in regards to this? Too much crowding by the curious if the space isn't enclosed?

It seems like someone is speaking for Mickey almost... like someone is watching him in another room and operating his mouth.

OR maybe I just have no idea how this technology works.

The weather (well, really rain). Regular, non-speaking characters can't be out in the rain, so it would be really bad to have characters like this out in the rain.

If Disney has gone to the trouble of putting a voice synthesizer inside the head (which seems to be the general consensus and the most likely answer), there's a good chance that the mouth movement is electronically controlled based on when the talking occurs by the CM.

It doesn't seem particularly likely that anyone would be able to pull off the highly coordinated hand movements while pressing buttons inside the fingers of the gloves.

Well, that's very rarely a problem in Disneyland. And now that it's May, it's practically statistically impossible to see rain in Anaheim until next November at the very earliest (but probably not until January).

I don't understand what else besides rain would prevent them from moving this concept outdoors.

If they were going to move this talking character outside of Mickey's House, Disneyland would be the place to do it. Which is why they might have started this test in Disneyland's Toontown.

All that said..... WOW! was this impressive to watch, regardless of indoors or outdoors. How funny that it was a test that people signed confidentiality agreements on, only to end up on YouTube a few hours later.

I think I get what people are saying. Besides weather, the control person would need to be in an out of the way location so people don't hear him/her talking.

I guess that would be easier to accomplish indoors, but it doesn't seem like an insurmountable obstacle to doing this outside, with a little extra planning.

And as noted above, "They say it never rains in Southern California."

It's also mind blowing how much tech is in that head. First there's the mechanisms to make his mouth move and eyes blink. Then there's the thing that changes the actor's voice (assuming its the person in the costume doing the talking) with speakers of some sort to produce the voice. Then they must have some sort of equipment so that the actor can hear the people talking to him. And lastly there also must be somthing to make the mouth move in sync with the voice.

Its mind boggling! Very impressive stuff.

Don't forget, someone's head has to fit in there, too... :D

It wouldn't be too hard to do. If Mickey had a wireless microphone on that could amplify his voice out and also create any sound modification they are using. I'm guessing the head is very similar to what we use at DAWM, so there isn't too much going on. Very cool effect and can't wait to see where they take this in the future.
