News New Changes Coming to the Disney Look 2021

Um... okay? Unless they're wearing a cool tattoo representing their favorite sports team, I don't really see why selling a basketball in the (not currently open) gift shop makes that unique.
Think about that comment. A CM sporting an Orlando Magic tattoo working at the NBA experience talking with the guests and or NBA tattooed player visiting the location. Seems like good conversation and stories between the guest and CM.

Here in SoCal, we have In-N-Out Burger which is famous for it's meticulously clean cut and well groomed employees that match its spotless restaurants. In-N-Out employees have no visible tats, men must have short hair, no facial hair, no piercings, no wild finger nail polish, and very modest makeup for ladies; a look that is reminiscent of Disney's theme park employees in the 1960's to 1990's.

In-N-Out Burger always pays several dollars more per hour than Disneyland does. Disneyland starts at $15 an hour now, one dollar above California minimum wage (that increases to $15 an hour in 8 months). But In-N-Out starts at $18 to $19 an hour at burger stands just a few blocks from Disneyland.

In-N-Out Burger has very high standards for grooming and appearance, but they have to pay their employees quite a bit more to get and maintain those higher standards. And it really shows.

You have to be good, and look the part, to get a job at In-N-Out with their $18+ starting wages in SoCal. You don't have to look this good or abide by these tough standards to get a job at McDonald's or Wal-Mart for minimum wage.

I'm surprised at how few CM's realize this basic rule of economics is a part of this latest lowering of standards for Disney employees.

Many of the CM's posting here seem to have bought into the "Inclusion" angle from their company hook, line and sinker. When in reality, all they are doing is helping to depress current and future wage growth for themselves and future Disney employees.

I'm not saying this is the entire reason for these changes, but it's a very big part of the reason. CM's seem far too willing to just ignore basic economics and instead say "Woohoo! I can now show all my gorgeous tats in Fantasyland! Disney loves me now!"

If maintaining a standard had a benefit for their wage, wouldn't the difference between the Disney wage and the minimum wage be bigger, like with In-N-Out? The ' old' look balanced out with that 15 dollar wage somehow.

How would you feel about a CM sporting a Trump tattoo? Keeping things at a professional level between customers and employees can have advantages, too.
Personally, I don't care if someone has a Trump, Biden, Obama, Bush or other political figures tattoo, but it does tell me a lot about them if they do.

But, speaking of these, I'm a little surprised the policy doesn't say anything about political figures or statements. Seems this is maybe an oversight. I can see it being changed really quick after a guest makes a complaint about a CM with a political figure they disagree with.

Then again, if one of those figures is in an attraction (HoP), hasn't Disney opened the door to allowing it?
I could see them being sued if they required someone to cover up their <insert political figure> tattoo, when it was in an attraction. Seems like a potential can of worms. This could get interesting, or ugly...

Not in California. The state minimum wage here has risen very, very fast. It increases $1 per year, with the final increase this January taking the California minimum wage to $15. I believe minimum wage in Florida is only about $10 an hour.

Disneyland will be paying minimum wage this January, unless they raise their current wage scales.

By making these changes now and expanding the labor pool, Disney has reduced the pressure to increase wages now and in the future.

The CM with a team tattoo in a sport shop is a lot more relevant than somehow drawing the connection to NBA players also having tattoos. You're trying to make some point that a CM with a tattoo in that store is somehow more authentic because NBA players have tattoos and it's honestly kinda weird.

I don't know if they even specifically hire NBA fans for the shop.

Perfect examples of the moderation I expect to happen.

Of course, but if leadership tells one person to cover their tattoo because it was perceived as politically offensive, but don't tell someone who has a similar but opposite political view, it could get messy. This is why I say it's a can of worms, that could be seen as unfair treatment or discrimination. Just another potential reason why allowing tattoos to be shown might be a bad idea.

I don’t think there will be too many political tatoos but I am wondering what will be allowed with regards to religious tattoos.

We shall see.

You could have a tattoo of a Pentagram or other Satanic symbols/words and claim that it's your firmly held religious belief.

The rules on tats are very vague and obviously not being enforced already.

But let's crack down on sunglasses. Now there's the key to great customer service! 🤣

It will boost CM morale for a few weeks and then it will be business as usual.

Yeah but let's be honest... Most of the people here complaining will have also moved on in a couple weeks and completely forgotten about it. In a couple months, they will be planning their next Disney Vacation and a couple years after that, when some new socially progressive change occurs, that will be the end end of the world as we know it and these times will be the celebrated "old days" when standards still mattered.

The old look gave little pressure to increase wages, if Disneyland is almost paying minimum wage.

Thanks for clarifying it.

I found a Dutch survey, 50% of the people in the age category 18-34 has a tattoo. Disapproval of employees with tattoo's is also lower among younger people.

So, there will be fewer people who look for a service with a ' no tattoo policy' for its staff, while that labor pool is quickly shrinking.

Places like In-N-Out will have to rethink this every once a while, because there's a breaking point for everything.
Paying 10 dollar per hour extra while 80% of the customers wouldnt mind tattoo's on the staff?

I've been posting on Disney message boards for about 25 years. I still have a pretty good memory and remember some of the changes that came along that caused consternation among fans.

This is a big one. It really gets at the core of what made Disney theme parks unique and special.

I'm not saying it's the end of the world, but this is a big one for a lot of folks. It's going to have repercussions for Disney's parks.

Some people have tattoos of a mouse, castle or fairy tale princess that they "worship". ;)
I wonder if any guests will find these offensive? 😂

Paying 10 dollars per hour extra for a formula that has made in-n-out one of the highest grossing per store restaurants? Yes it’s worth it.

(The highest grossing per store is chik-fil-a that doesn’t allow tatoos and requires all men to be clean shaven etc.)
