Oh, I can absolutely see them using the rfid bands/tickets/cards as a way to limit alcohol. Probably not a bad idea. Probably a very good idea. Seems like a good use of that tech. It's not a fool-proof plan as people can and will get around it, but a step in the right direction. At the end of the day, it's still a theme park and there's no excuse for this type of behavior. I hope that fellow isn't allowed back to a Disney park for some amount of time. Disney justice should be hard justice ;)

Agreed. Buying an alcoholic drink? Scan your MagicBand/park ticket. The next time you buy one the cashier could see a list of drinks you had purchased that day and at what time. The CM would still have to use their judgement, but if the guest was on the borderline of needing to be cut off the CM could check the screen. If the Guest has only purchased 2 drinks, give them another, but 10 drinks in the last 2 hours... might be time to get cut off.

Disney really needs to do more to protect us from this sort of danger.

I remember a few years back, I fell down some stairs at the Contemporary and bruised my knee. But yet still to this day, Disney has made no effort to remove all of the stairs on property so that no one else might suffer as I did.

Maybe they can limit the number of stairs everyone is allowed to climb by tracking your daily walking via magicbands.

When I was a cm, a drunk guest became belligerent towards me and hit me. He basically ran through the area and headed into a backstage area. I followed him and told him he couldn't go through there so he hit me and cursed at me. I had nothing to lose so I grabbed his arm and twisted it behind his back. I dragged the a-hole back into the guest area and he walked off. I wasn't going to wait around for some goofy manager to come and do nothing. I'm not advocating to fight back with these jerk offs but I was in a situation where no one was around and this dude could have left me for dead.

I can't believe this guy hit a girl with a pvc pipe. I can't imagine what I would do. I'm not trying to be internet tough guy but jeez..

It's not too far-fetched to envision MagicBands one day being used to enforce drink limits, with your next beer return time indicated on My Disney Experience.

I see the thought, but how are they going to stop spouses/friends etc. from supplying drinks to someone whose magicband has cut them off?

I can see all of the Manhattan moms that were hiring the disabled now hiring sober people to escort them into the park and get them drinks.

I once got 10 beers at one stop, for me a nine other people with me. Only drank one beer I drank that night. MagicBand would not work unless everyone would have to buy their own beer. Sure make for longer lines.

They do this already with the Mad T Party at Disneyland if you use a debit/credit card to purchase drinks you're only allowed 2. Obvs. there are a zillion ways around that - but still...

A few notes:

Disney will never discontiue booz at the parks. Especially Epcot. The margins are insane and the booz are maybe the biggest money maker at WDW.

That being said, F&W simply is not a safe family environment in the evenings. We went opening night and last Wednesday. We may not return to Epcot in the evening until mid November. I really wanted to see a few of the bands too, but not on Fri/Sat nights.

He hits a woman? With a weapon? That's some pretty effed up stuff right there.

I have no idea why F&W does not stay open even later than it does. Maybe letting guests have an extra hour or two at the end could space out some of the drinking? Lord knows Disney will make even more $$$.

Are we sure these guys were not involved?

I hear they like altercations at Epcot.

I agree with you on all points here. Except that I'll never go back to Epcot. Or at least until that park is heavily overhauled and upgraded, it just isn't worth my time and especially my money.

(edit to add: general reason why I won't be back. Lack of things that interest me, wasn't what I expected history-wise, and ran into way too many drunk people during the flower and garden show last May. If I want to be around idiotic drunks, I'll stay in Pittsburgh thanks)

They'll never stop selling booze. But maybe they will find a way to limit it.... even still, I highly doubt this, as F&W promotes drinking 'around the world' by having each pavilion with their own specialized drinks and food.

I have no problem with others enjoying a beer or wine, I just have a hard time understanding why anyone would want to experience WDW with anything other than a clear mind....

I understand a few drinks during the course of the day but what's the fun in getting sloshed? Not that everyone gets drunk, I know it's a select few.

I think it is terrible that this happened and I hope the consequences are severe for the person who assualted those people. I have never been down during Food and Wine, so I do not know what the environment is like. However, I would be unhappy if a system was put in place to monitor how many drinks I have purchased. I do agree that if someone is clearly intoxicated, then they should absolutely be cut off. I wonder what staff training is put in place to recognize and safely approach situations where guests have obviously had too much to drink?

Any place that offers alcohol also offers the opportunity for some idiot to drink too much and cause problems. If Disney wanted to stop this, they would have to ban all alcohol sales on property. And that won't happen. It really is a shame though what F&W Festival has turned into on the weekends. A CM friend of mine avoids it at all costs because it's twenty somethings and college kids getting rip roaring drunk. I'm sure it isn't every night and I'm sure it isn't always that bad.

It's not just during F&W though.. Heck, I've seen a group drinking around the world during the middle of the day, starting at Mexico and we ran into them again at American Adventure. The Fife and Drum Corps was perferoming and 2 guys got right in their faces and were mimicking everything the performers were doing and just being so super rude and when the corps turned to march away, the guys marched right next to them. I can't remember correctly but I think one of the guys actually ran into a performer when they were turning. By the time this group got to the UK, one girl was falling asleep sitting on the curb against a lightpost, holding two full beers in her hand... another girl dropped her beer and the other people she was with made her get down, do pushups and lick the beer off the pavement and a third guy was being spoken to by a CM (I'm assuming about their ridiculous behavior) Every other word out of their mouth was eff this, eff that and they were bumping into everyone and were just loud, rude and obnoxious. Unfortunately there are these types of groups no matter if you go to Epcot or Universal. The best they can do is corral these idiots who cause problems and kick them out. I would NEVER get that intoxicated at a FAMILY theme park, but then again, I probably have more respect for others then some of these people who get hammered there.

Locals, college kids going to school in the area who can go to Disney whenever they want versus the person who has planned and traveled to be there. Some local people go there for the sole purpose of drinking. I personally haven't seen anyone TOO belligerant when I've been there but I have seen several people too drunk to stand up on their own.
