My tragic day

My day looked like a very good one today.... got up earlier than normally, went out to run some chores with my sister, came home at noon, played with nephew, got online, checked my mail and logged into this site.... then I had lunch, and my sister insisted on going to the mall with her.... I left my laptop on still logged on wdwmagic and went with her for a 2 hour visit... When I came back, my laptop´s screen was all black with a little message saying something about wondows not being able to do something I can´t remember... I "resetted" it and the word "compaq" came on the screen like it normally does before "windows" shows, but this time, "windows" never showed up and the screen remained all black.

I panicked and took it to Compaq Care Center (where they already know me  ) and the guy takes a look at it and tells me that my HARD DRIVE IS DEAD! I almost cried there! This is just to top it all! I have tons of pictures from my digital and from my year at Disney there! I can´t scan many of them again! But the thing that worried me more, is that at the beginning of the month (maybe some of you remember) I had to finish a 20 pages paper to get my diploma for a course I took on Communications and PR. Well... the whole paper was there and I was going to print it today! The guy said that he doesn´t think I will be able to get it back! I´m devastated! The only thing I think could happened was that while I was gone, the power went out for a few seconds (according to the maid), and my laptop´s battery was being charged so it was plugged but to the "regulator", so I don´t see why it damaged it so much to hit the hard drive....

I´m writing this from my brother´s pc, but I can´t use this one (loong story that made me buy that laptop), so friends.... I´ll be away for a while.... :( I´m gonna go crazy without my laptop and the worst part is that I will have to redo that paper!

Thanks for listenning to me vent tonight.... See you some day soon... :(

I hate computers! I also don't like that "feeling" when something like that happens...I usually get over it pretty soon, but hurry back!

Maria!!! that is awful. I hate that for you. I hate also that you won't be online..darn it. I hope the man is wrong and maybe it's not gone. I remember watching the episode of ______ in the City where Carrie's hard drive crashed, I never thought of backing up my system until I saw that. I guess I need to back it up again, it's been awhile.

Hope to see you back real soon.

Maria,
I know exactly what you're going through. I write scripts for a few TV shows, and had a ton of digi pics on my old laptop that went bye bye.. same thing. A power surge knocked it out. I am sorry that you have to re-write the paper, but at least that is recoverable. The pics.. well, you'll just have to take more to replace them (like I had to do) with new memories.

Cheer up... at least it can't get any worse.

:)

Don't give UP!

Well, if your hard drive has indeed gone bad, you still have some options. If you have the time (and lots of money) several hard drive recovery companies can get the data from your drive. It is VERY expensive. Only worth the money if you have national security data on your hard drive. Another solution that works about 60% of the time is to freeze the hard drive. Just remove the drive from the computer, put the unit in a zip lock freezer bag and exclude as much air as you can and then put the unit in a deep freeze for about 24 hours. Then just make sure you have another drive or computer available to which you can dump the data on the (frozen) hard disk. You then just remove the frozen device, hook it up and see if it will run. As I said, about 60% of the time this will work. You just have to copy the contents of the (bad) hard disk to a good disk quickly before the frozen device thaws out. I've done this many times on 60 GB hard drives. Norton Ghost works great for this kind of transfer. The other solution is the 15 inch workbench drop method. At this point, what have you got to lose? Good luck.

Maria,

I feel awful for you, but look on the bright side. You've got friends out in cyberland who are here for you, and that's much more important than any files. Keep positive:), we're all looking forward to your return.

Maria! That really sucks... I know where you are coming from... my hard drive crashed a few months ago, and I lost a LOT of my important stuff that I will never be able to get back... :(

Hope all turns out okay...

I'm deathly afraid of hard drive crashes and I have waaay too much stuff to back it up to CD-R. I got one of those external USB2 hard drives and it works like a charm. USB2 is much faster than I expected. The drive itself is only 5400 RPM which is slower than what's in my computer but that also means it's cheaper and makes less heat. The whole shebang was under $200 for 60GB and that includes the USB2 upgrade card.

I know it's too late to help you now, but maybe you should consider investing in one when you get up and running again. If all else fails give Talsonic's freezer method a try, it really does work sometimes.

I'm so sorry, Maria! Remember when my computer crashed a while back? I lost my final project, had to start it all over again. Hopefully, you'll be able to work it all out.

We'll be here, waiting for your return!
