MSEP Returns

Having grown up with MSEP, I was decidedly underwhelmed when I saw the newer version in FL last year. The music was inferior to the original Don Dorsey score. I missed the circus unit and the Bedknobs Lion, who was always a crowd pleaser. I hated the new costumes and the dumbed-down choreography. Finally, the long gaps between units was just pathetic.

I still wish they didn't reuse the Dreamlights music for most of the parade.

I kinda wish Dreamlights had its own soundtrack. Seems kind of lame to rearrange to score from an old classic.

Why not just call it the MSEP then?

Well, its full title is Tokyo Disneyland Electrical Parade Dreamlights. The original parade there was called Tokyo Disneyland Electrical Parade, as they don't have Main Street (World Bazaar Electrical Parade doesn't have the same ring to it). Dreamlights was meant to be an updated and more elaborate remake of the original parade and it's truly breathtaking in person.

The soundtrack starts full synth, recreating the sound of the original. As the parade progresses, the music becomes more orchestral, until the finale unit brings a bombastic symphonic arrangement of the theme. It works really well when you're watching the parade, and the transitions are very subtle.

In my mind it's the gold standard for light parades right now, and I LOVE PTN. Love it. But Dreamlights still beats it in my book.

I actually wished they kept the original MSEP audio for it's 2009 return and kept the Dreamlights soundtrack for Tokyo. The current music used at WDW kind of loses it's meaning until you see Tokyo Disneyland Electrical Parade Dreamlights in person. It's even better during thee Christmas season since it remixes the usual music with Christmas medleys.

Am I the only one who actually liked the concept of Light Magic?

Welp. Guess I am.

I enjoyed Light Magic, but I don't think it would have had staying power. DL guests would have tired of it quickly without major updates and it wasn't really a parade. It was a street show, like Block Party Bash.

It's unfortunate that Light Magic scared DL out of light parades for so many years. Parade of the Stars was originally designed to be a light parade, hence the celestial theme present in all of the floats. Kinda glad that didn't happen because that parade was a snoozer and lights would NOT have helped.

I would have liked for it to happen sooner, but Paint the Night is an awesome parade and a worthy successor. I just hope they don't junk it by sending it to WDW where it will fall apart.

Your love for WDW makes me not want to ever go there. It sounds like a third rate carnival.

I adore WDW. I really do. It's an amazing place with all kinds of amazing things. Or at least, it was. In 2016, it's overpriced beyond all measure while offering less and less value all the time. It's run shoddily and has been for years. They do not take care of their things. They have let the MSEP fall apart, they refuse to fix major show effects on their rides, they carelessly let SpectroMagic fall into disrepair, saddling themselves with MSEP until it too became just about unusable. They refuse to update their major entertainment. Wishes is 13 years old. IllumiNations is 17 years old. Fantasmic is 18 years old. They run that Beauty and the Beast stage show with a straight face and it is nearly 25 years old.
