More Monorail Problems Tonight

While trains breaking down, etc are a fairly common event it seems to be happenign MORE often now & its in the spotlight after the events earlier in the year. I will agree the biggest problem causing issues is the lake of care for the trains. Eisner was already cutting corners when the markVI trains arrived. They Never saw the daily cleaning & care the the mark IV trains saw, this is apparent from the nasty condition of the trains. TDO needs to also realize the systems supporting monorails are getting close to 40 years old, although upgrades were made in 90's for the new trains many systems are still old & need to get replaced. Someone needs to get TDO awake & off their cheap rears to spend some $$ before daily power outages are a problem, & we constantly have trains having a flat while out because it wasnt inspected the night before like it should have been. :fork:

:(

Seems like the monorail is having a lot of issues lately. Hope something gets done soon. I'm sure it's starting to get a bad rep locally.

If you're someone that goes to WDW every weekend, you would realize that the Monorails are nowhere near 95% efficiency. This happens about once every time I go to WDW. Not trying to hammer anyone, just pointing it out.

In watercraft, we called it MonoCrash because we were always bailing them out with the crowds when they broke down. This happened at least once a week.

Are the minor problems happening more or just being reported more? Ninety-five percent effeciency still allows for an hour of downtime a day if they run the train for 20 hours (7 am-2 am).

I've got to believe that there are more important things going on in Orlando than a monorail being towed.

Consider this...
Mark I ... 3 years in service DL
Mark II ... 8 years in service DL
Mark III ... 17 years in service DL
Mark IV ... 18 years in service WDW
Mark V ... 21 years in service DL
Mark VI ... 20 years and counting WDW
Mark VII ... 1 year and counting DL

Retirement seams to be the 20 mark roughly. I think the system and trains are just getting old and need some TLC.

With some Disnification this should be the future design of the WDW monorails.

Keeping that distinct Lear Jet image but making it a bit more futuristic. I still maintain it needs to keep the original design theme of opening day. I would not want to see a DL design in WDW.

I know this is only partially related but does anyone know if Teal has the spiels installed?

Every time I have been on Teal since it come in to service I have never heard any spiel on it. No please stand clear of the doors, not even the chime when doors open or anything.

I'm seriously wondering if I should ride them this weekend.:lookaroun:lol:

Even though this happens all the time, as said, I really do think that a overhaul of the fleet is needed. They are old, there have been some issues, and this is a perfect time to do so.

Or, we could get a sparkly new fleet like Disneyland.:D

O yeah you so should Evan, then you can finally tell Kevin Yee what you do when you have to urinate......apparently to urinate out the window of a monorail is his dream come true...:brick:

For you folks who think new monorails are the solution, let me tell you that it won't be happening any time soon. Early in 2010, Bombadier (sp?) will have completed building a new monorail to get the fleet back up to 12, and it will be a Mark VI. If they are releasing a brand new monorail, without upgrade, then I'm sure they are planning to keep the Mark VI's around for a long time to come.

Also, for those of you who think they should expand the monorail system to the other parks and resorts, I can say with confidence that that will NEVER happen. Unfortunately, the total cost to build the entire system 40 years ago would be equal to building just one mile today.

Cracks me up...

Oh here we go w/all the "experts" critiquing the monorail again. These are of course the same people that complain when a train doesn't show up every minute but will wait w/o complaint for 90 minutes to ride Peter Pan.

You don't have to ride the train. Better yet, don't. Ride the smelly buses w/your kids. That leaves more room for me to relax while I do laps.

If you only knew how often this stuff happens it would freak most of you guys out. It just so happens that since July, the media is looking for anything and everything bad about the monorail and most people being unable to process information themselves jump to conclusions.

I'm an uber cynic about WDW and when you've been going there for 37 years, work there, and practically live there you can't help but be, but the monorail is the last thing you'll ever hear me complain about.

Central Clear.

While I agree with your post, for the most part, what I bolded doesn't sit well with me. Seeing that there HAVE been issues, shouldn't it be in Disney's best interest to correct them? That's the only issue I have with the trains. Love 'em. Go out of my way to ride them every trip. I don't think I've parked at EPCOT since the 90's. I just would like to see them convenient, fully functional, and safer than before.

(Not saying that they weren't before...Don't get me wrong.)

The Monorails are the only way to go. When you ask my son what his favorite ride is at WDW.. he says Monorails or Train. I will be right behind you doing laps. I hope some day being a monorail pilot will be my retirement job.

Not sure where you got your information but there not building a new monorail. They still have the monorails from the crash they just need to replace the cabs.

The Monorails are having no more operational issues now than they ever have.

The only difference is that since the accident, our lovely local Orlando media has decided to report every single little boring hiccup that happens day-to-day.

Imagine if the Sentinel started reporting every 101 that happens on Space Mountain, which "breaks down" and has operational issues FAR more often than the monorail system.

All it is is sensational media on a slow news day.

While the media is going overboard, it does raise the question of what is actually going on with the monorails.

I never remember this many problems. And no, I'm not talking about the crash, that was an accident.

Could it be that there wasn't the media coverage we have today. Or could it be that the media is trying to divert our attention from more seriou matters...

Here we go again...The media is over doing things now...seriously, this..news worthy?? This is a normal occurance and there is absolutely no need for a pointless news article. If anything, the article should mention the complex safety systems in place WORKING and not the "defects" that aren't anything to cause alarm. Like Rob said, I could see the media getting worked up about every major 101 around property...

You think this is bad.. Our local NBC affiliate ran a story about how a spilled drink started a sorority girl scuffle
