Well, so much for that inning. Even if thy had made the correct call things may have ended the same. But now we will never know. Something has to be done in baseball to counter act these situations. To many big moments are getting screwed up by umps.

I'd be willing to bet we'd have at least a 6-4 score right now had that bad call not been made. Maybe this will light a fire under the Braves' hitting for the bottom of the 9th.

Cardinals win, but have to sprint off field to avoid getting injured by debris being thrown onto field by fans. Not your typical post-game celebration. Congrats to Cards & Cards' fans for an impressive win. Despite the bad umpire call, St. Louis won this game fairly.

Bittersweet farewell to Atlanta's #10 Chipper Jones. Great 19-yr history; a true legend in the game of baseball. We'll miss you, Larry.

Well, that's it for my guys. If you'll excuse me I'm going to sit in the corner a minute. Need some time with my Sam Adams to think of all the great years with Chipper and what I would say if I ever met that ump. I'll be back soon to support anyone facing the Yankees. Hate those dang Yankeess.

Moving west to the AL wild card game: Orioles have jumped ahead of the Rangers 2-1 in the 6th inning.

Not gonna lie...I'm loving these one game knockout matchups.

Imagine the rumors will begin..."Larry doesn't want to go out that way", or "Larry knows he can still play" or finally, "Came too close to quit now"!! Can't wait to hear the Zone and Fan in the coming weeks.

Nats-Cards should be a good series. The Cards had only the 5th-best record in the NL but 2nd-best run differential behind only the Nats. The Cards beat them 2 out of 3 in StL last week, and have more playoff experience (although the experience thing is often over-rated).

Yanks-Os is pretty evenly matched too. Only 2 games difference in the standings and they split their season series 9 games to 9.

It sounds like a big part of the problem is the way the rule is written. It should just apply to cases where the fly ball is short enough that a fielder has some chance of turning a double play by deliberately dropping the ball.

On MLB TV they were showing video from regular season games where the rule was invoked for other balls hit too deep for a double play, although maybe not quite as deep as yesterday's.

What obviously made this controversial was that Kozma backed off and didn't catch the ball. But the umpire made the call the instant before that happened and had no reason to think it wouldn't be caught.

If the infield fly wasn't called, and Uggla was thrown out at 3rd, the argument would have been why wasn't an infield fly called. So ether way, their would have been an argument.

There's no perfect solution, but I'd be happy if they revised the rule to make it clear the whole point is to prevent intentionally dropping a ball to turn a double play, and if a ball is hit too deep for that to be possible, don't invoke the rule. That might not prevent dropping a ball to get the lead runner at 3B, but even if you can eliminate a faster runner by intentionally dropping a ball that's a small thing compared to the double play possibility.

Sorry to see the Braves out. Yes, the infield fly call was awful, but the errors
cost them the game IMHO. As I said, sorry to see them out, but won't miss the
chant they do when Braves at bat. Thank goodness they don't do it at Spring Training games.

I see your point. But the ball landed far enough out that the runners had time to advance. Both runners were waiting about midway between bases. Like you do with a fly ball, not an infield popup.

Also, anyone see Joe Torre's comments? I'm getting tired of the same ole spiel out of him when this stuff happens. Stop making excuses and do something to address the situation. I understand that umpires aren't perfect, mistakes will happen, and they get more calls right than wrong. However, bad calls should be able to be overturned when a game is at stake.

Including the wild cards that are already eliminated, 6 teams have had home games in the playoffs, but the Tigers are the only team to win a home game.

CINCINNATI REDS!!!!!! :);)

2 out of 3 games and on our way to winning game 3 tuesday night in the big NATI!!!!!
They're looking great so far.

I realize these alternating bands of sun and shadows affect the Nats and Cards equally in these late afternoon games yesterday and today. But it's still a different game, thanks to the scheduling demands of the TV networks. The hitters and fielders just don't see the ball as well. These two teams haven't played many sloppy games this year but you wouldn't know it from watching these 2 games.

I'm surprised the Giants haven't done better. They're playing like they did back in the spring/early summer months. What happened to the San Fran of August++ ?

I'm surprised by the Giants as well...
But I am elated by my Detroit Tigers....2-0 and heading to Oakland where they win a lot...one more win (of 3 more games) and the Tigers move on...
