Mission Space with tall 4 year old

I think my tall (45 in) 4 year old would like Mission Space, but I'm not sure if it will be too much for him. I would definitely do the easier version. We went to DL when he was almost 3 and he loved BTMRR, Splash Mtn, Space Mtn, and the Matterhorn. Does anyone have any experience of going on M:S with a 4 year old?

No experience but I'm waiting for the same answer. My DS4 just hit 44" today, and he's never met a thrill ride he didn't like (Splash, Soarin', Big Thunder, Test Track, etc.). I do recall a 4-year-old having medical problems a few years ago after riding Mission: Space, but that was, of course, the spinning version.

DS [now 12] has been riding since it opened and never had any problems with what is now "Orange" [the spinning version]. He didn't start at four, but he never even considered green once they had the choice.

You sound like us.

When our DS was 3, we took him for the first time, and Dinosaur was the only thing he didn't like (and we didn't like it, either).

Now DS is 4, and he is also 44". I would be okay taking my DS on the easy Mission Space.

Easy answer:

Try the Green version first. If your child seems to do well on that you can consider doing the Orange. Even try riding the Orange version yourself first and try to gage if it is suitable for your child.

We took our then 4 year old on the orange version a few years back and he was the only one who didn't get sick -- and loved the ride. My husband and I did the green version last year and it is fine for an adventerous little one. I thought it was comprable to Star Tours, but not quite as bumpy, and you lie back in the ride.

Same here. As soon as DS was tall enough, and wanted to, he did. BTMRR, Splash, SM, TT, ST, and M:S Green. Surprisingly, he did NOT want to ride ToT, EE or Dinosaur so I didn't push it. Now, all he talks about is next year when he'll be able to ride RnRC :)

I personally wouldn't bring my 4 yo(who is also on the taller side) on the orange version. Their neck muscles are not developed enough to take the force. Not necessarily that something will happen but it can happen. I am not willing to take that chance on a ride.

I haven't been on the green yet so can't comment on that.

Thanks for the replies. Assuming he wants to, I'll take my son on the green version. I've never been on M:S, but just the descriptions of the orange one makes me queasy.

The other ride I'm on the fence about is EE. We watched one of the travel channel shows about Disney, and there was a segment about EE. We talked about how the monster at the end is just pretend and he seems okay with it. I'm not sure if the backwards part will be too much for even an adventurous 4 year old. I've definitely ruled out ToT and Dinosaur.

I can't comment on M:S since I've never done it but you might want to wait a year or so for EE. I'm built on the more 'delicate' side (poke me three times, I bruise) and the backwards part of EE really hurt my body. I was fine, but it was very unpleasant at the time and it took most of the day until I felt back to normal. It's probably just me but just thought I'd share. I'm going to duck now in case I start getting attacked lol

Think about those rides in amusement parks that spin around and you stick to the wall....that is how Mission Space works. Seems pretty intesne for a 4 year old I think, but that is really up to the child. I love the ride myself but you can feel pretty claustrophobic in there as you are sealed in, then the controls move towards you making it an even smaller space and to top it off you feel compressed into the seat. Its a really cool sensation and you do feel like you are taking off. I should note to that it is pretty much like that only for take off for about 10 seconds during take off and then a few bursts here and there in the ride...the rest of the time your floating in space and landing on Mars pretty much.

I really think 4 is too young for MS Orange. My kids have been on big rides since they were little, but looking back I took risks that I shouldn't have. I haven't been on the green side, but people tell me that it's virtually the same without the intense pressure that you feel. I ride the Orange side every trip. I think that the kids should be involved in every ride decision too. I see a lot of kids come off these big rides crying or rocking in a corner, or worse. I witnessed a small child pleading not to go on Dinosaur, and the parents forcing him to go using guilt as a motivator. MS Orange is very intense, even for many adults. Try the green first, and see how he does.

It's really hard to judge as the experience is unlike most any other ride. The suggested approach of doing green first they you checking out orange by yourself first is a good one.

The closest comparison are the centrifugal force type rides at other parks, like "round up" or the one where the floor drops and you are "stuck" to the wall.

With that said, discretion is probably the best approach....have it as an opportunity for a future visit.
