Trip Report Mickey-less Lesson #1: Size doesn't matter, it's the motion of the ocean!

Yes, it's a non-Disney trip report. In a sea of Disney trip reports this is a non-Disney report. How is that pertinent on a Disney-centric fan forum, you ask? Well, this is how a solely Disney Cruise Line experienced cruising family took their first wobbly steps into non-Disney-fied cruising. Ever been curious? So were we! How the competition measures up is definitely pertinent! However, if the mods think this thread is better served in the cruise section or the other places section, I certainly understand. So sit back, relax, and slosh along with us in whatever "port" this thing sails off to.

Thread title:

Mickey-less Lesson #1: Size doesn't matter, it's the motion of the ocean! ((in my best double-rainbow dude voice)) What does it meeeaaan????? The ship we sailed is currently THE largest cruise ship on the seas: Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas. This ship is huge! How big? Let me show you. Not my picture, all credit goes to fet123 on Photobucket. Lined up here in Nassau are: Majest of the Seas, Disney Dream, Carnival Dream, the NCL Sky, and Allure's sliiiightly smaller sister ship the Oasis of the Seas. Good size comparison:

1a1f90d2.jpg

Allure of the Seas is 16 decks high, 1,187 ft long, and can carry a maximum passenger load of 6,296 serviced by roughly 2,300 crew members. In comparison, Disney's largest/newest ship in the fleet, the Fantasy is 14 decks high, 1,115.5 ft. long, and can carry a maximum passenger load of 4,000 serviced by a crew of 1,450. The Allure is a very big girl!

Among Disney's fleet my family prefers the smaller classic ships. Why? It's more laid-back, there's less people, and the overall experiences we've had were more personal and intimate if you will. We like that a lot! We knew going into this cruise that we were going to be on the biggest cruise ship afloat and that we probably would not be impressed by her size. We were right. We weren't. For us, bigger does not equate better. Size doesn't matter.

The motion of the ocean can definetly play a strong hand in your cruise experience! Leading up to our cruise I discovered (no thanks to Royal Caribbean which is my biggest aggravation with the entire experience of sailing with them) via Cruise Critic's forums that the Allure had been experiencing an issue with 1 of her 3 azipods. They had been sailing her without using the center screw for over a month before our sailing. She was safe and still functioned fine. They were just trying not to use the center pod as much as possible to avoid further/more extensive damage. So the ship sailed slower. Instead of her usual 22+ knots cruising we rarely exceeded about 16-17 knots cruising. AND, because the ship was sailing at reduced power, the captain did not utilize the stabilizers to keep the ship steady at sea. The stabilizers, like wings that extend from the sides of the ship to add stability and reduce rocking side-to-side, create drag which would slow the ship even more. So, the motion of the ocean on a ship not using her stabilizers was...well...a really FUN ride for us...not so much for those prone to sea sickness. ;)

*****Just for information sake, the Allure continues to run on 2 of her 3 pods. A cruise in February was cancelled back in mid-November to allow a week-long drydock to repair the pod. I believe it is a bering issue. It's my understanding this type of problem has been a reoccuring thing with ships that utilize the different azipods for their propulsion. To date Disney has not utilized the azipod propulsion for their ships.*****

So that nobody feels the need to ask before I get to the end and give my summation of the overall experience sailing without Mickey, I don't feel like it was better or worse than any of the 7 Disney cruises I have been on. I'm not just being nice. It's a whole different experience. I wouldn't categorize it as better or worse, it's different.

On a different note about the sign....as a graphic designer, I'm a lot OCD when it comes to design. And the glaring mistake in this table is driving me nuts! Laps on one side distance on the other!

Anyway... Love your TR's and this one is making me think I may go the RCCL route for a cruise with just the wife and myself.
I hadn't even noticed about the sign but I get what you're saying here! Pick a side for each, fellas! LOL! Maybe the sign guys were on the premium drinky-drink package, too. :D

I'll get more into this a bit more later but we really do think Royal is a great option for adult getaways!

What airframe did you ride the fence with?
I'll ask the old man tomorrow. He crashed early, working off day #13 tomorrow. Yay for at least every 14th day off! Beats none, right?

It wasn't a 747 if that's what you're wondering. 18 months ago when we booked the cruise the schedules had a 747 that flew in on Thursdays. I think KLM. Or Corsair or something. I don't know. LOL! Its one of the reasons we chose to keep this cruise booked. I'm pretty sure it was after our paid-in-full date passed and we were in the penalty phase that they announced a schedule change. No 747 on Thursdays. @Sweetpee's Sugar Daddy was crushed. Of course that came off as mad. It wasn't pretty. Even the morning we docked in St.Maarten he was saying he could just skip Maho. I wasn't letting him regret being that close & not going. So glad we went. It wasn't the biggest but it was a taste of what we WILL go back for again. ;)

Soo jelly you've done Disney. Until I can find a great deal, we won't be going on it anytime soon. My sister claimed there wasn't enough to do on our ship, Enchantment of the Seas, so I think she might like the Allure or Oasis, but they are sooooo big. I agree with you on the smaller ships, though. They seem as though they have a more "personal" feeling. Maybe going on the Freedom class would be better... I can never imagine being on a ship for more than ten days, so needing that premium alcohol package would be necessary!! Hahaha
There were times Tracey & I were bored on the Allure. I think it was just lack of interest in what was going on at the time. But hey! There was always a bar to hit up! I'll get into more details further along. I think a ship that depends heavily on their highly touted outside activities should be better prepared for inclement weather when all those activities & venues can't operate. KWIM?

I think we could put a hurtin' on that premium package with 10 days onboard. LOL!

I have caught up completely.

To answer your question: we didn't book the alcoholic beverage package, just the soda package. Mainly because we had planned to spend most of our days in ports, and due to it being 4 days, we were in port every day. But I loved the soda mugs! Very large, very sturdy, well made. Unlike other mugs I have (I'm looking at you Disney! )

That is a bummer about Chops. On the Majesty they don't have an upcharge restaurant, so I can't compare that, but they do offer Chops Grille upcharge choices in the dining room. Didn't try any. We only ate in the dining room 2 out of 4 nights I think.

Also BUMMER about the boat cruise! How rude of them to not let you know!!! It's not like they give you much time in port at some places anyway! And couldn't even stop in Nassau. What if you had excursions booked? Were they refunded? (Not that the weather could be avoided). We went to Atlantis and it was NOT cheap!

It was the Copa Embraer 190
Ok, so I looked on Wikipedia about this plane to see what it looked like...they have a section on the page for accidents for the 190...and not to alarm you or anything but look at the date on this entry...

  • 29 November 2013: LAM Mozambique Airlines Flight 470, an Embraer 190, crashed in Namibia, killing all 33 aboard (27 passengers, 6 crew members).[45] The co-pilot reportedly left the cockpit to use the toilet. He was then locked out by the captain, who dramatically reduced the aircraft’s altitude and ignored various automated warnings ahead of the high-speed impact.[46]
OMG! Hope it wasn't the same plane you saw!

I don't think so because that was a Mozambique Airlines plane and we saw a Copa. Different airline. ;)

Let's get back to St. Thomas, shall we???

So when I last left you we were headed up the next path to the next site. It was a steap uphill climb. In flip flops. Fun.

Yep. We're good. The ship hasn't left us.

We eventually came to a bit of an opening and Alexander showed some of us how to use a long weed to off freaky cranky spider things that live in holes in the ground. Sometimes you can get them to hang onto the invasive weed and pull them from their hole. Ellen tried it. And screamed. I'm not down with spiders so much and they're reeeaally not Tracey's thing. ((Yes, I've seen him squeal like a woman over a spider before.)) While the others were spider fishing Tracey took a potty break in the woods and I just sorta enjoyed the view.

A short distance beyond the spider fishing spot was this structure.

This is the remains of a cistern from a leprosy colony. Nice, huh? There were other buildings that were once nearby but this was all that remained. The view from here was nice.

You can really see the entry to the harbor area down to the right.

I was almost afraid to walk around looking too closely. I really felt as if there were more remains here than I wanted to find so I said a little blessing and moved on. Again, I'm a spooky kinda girl like that.

We returned to the kayaks to head around to our snorkel spot. I'd like to pause here to mention the rain squals. Rain squals come and go like the breezes. We sat thru a squal waiting for our tour to commence. We paddled across the boat lanes to Hassel Island in a bit of rain. They come and they go but, to me, it doesn't exactly enhance the fun. In fact, I was growing rather tired of frickin' rain. If you've read my last 3 cruise reports you'd definitely understand why. LOL!

So we kayaked our way around the point into not-so-protected water. I think for me being a novice and Chandler being a first timer we did pretty good. Never went for a swim when we weren't supposed to even with all the wave action. This rocky section we paddled past was interesting.

When we parked the kayaks I took a pic to show where we had moved to in relation to where our ship was.

This was sitting on the beach where we pulled up. Kinda hard to make out with the water droplets on my lens but it's a smiley face!

So we geared-up and headed out to snorkel. With the squals we'd been having and the somewhat rough water the bottom was pretty stirred up. Made for a less-clear experience than we're accustomed to.

But it was lookin' kinda nice on the surface.

We swam along and came upon a big diesel engine. Possibly from a wreck???

Here you see Alexander diving down to it. We couldn't dive down because we were stuck wearing life preservers. Yuck.

I was losing interest in the below water views when the above water views were so nice.

Oh but there's a squal or 2 out there. See?

And like I said, they come along like the breezes...

I was tryin' my darndest to get travelin' toes shots for @Disneyfalcon but the stirred up water just wasn't gonna make pretty for me.

Alexander handed me this. I wish I could tell you what the heck it is. He said something about it being an organism or something. For whatever reason I decided it needed a picture.

Then I sent it back to the sea.

We returned to our kayaks and had a little refuel before our return paddle to the marina. The paddling, hiking, and snorkeling really wears a person down so Alexander brought water and a candy bar for each of us.

Here we are paddling back. And, of course, more rain is threatening.

That's the end of my excursion pics. Chandler is quite the bossy britches of a guy. He was having none of me puting down my paddle for anything. We muscled back across the boat lanes and into the marina some kinda fast. I think we may have kicked up a rooster tail. LOL! When we got to the marina there was a taxi driver waiting. Convenient! And we were back to the port area in no time. Of course as soon as we stepped out of the taxi the skies completely opened up. Ugh! We ducked under a covered area momentarily but there were sooooo many people scrambling to get out of the rain that the long security line back onto the pier in the rain became the thing to do. So we stood in the rain. And it sucked. I wasn't thrilled but it got us back to the ship, a shower, and dry clothes quicker.

Back on the ship.

The sun went down and the Carnival ship left.

Central Park at night. I think I Instagram'd this.

We were hungry for dinner and needed some grub. Dress for dinner in the main dining room??? That's soooo not happening. We decided we should go back where we started our day:

After being seated and getting our drinks we were brought an appetizer. Didn't ask for it but who's complaining! We're HUNGRY!

I tried to get a cute selfie with Tracey to Instagram before we left port (remember, we're still in a USVirgin Island!). Tracey was in not-very-rare Tracey form.

Good times.

Maybe a kissy shot would be un-bomb-able?

I'm all about cheeseburgers and Johnny Rockets does NOT disappoint!

Tracey had a hotdog AND a BLT???

Tracey's parents and Rachel came in and joined us. We chit-chatted about our very different port days and got all caught up. Then there were FLOATS! I had a Coke float.

Tracey goes for root beer.

Babe? Did the ice cream make you a little cold?

Dad seems to have enjoyed his Johnny Rockets, too.

Periodically the restaurant staff line up and dance to some of the music playing. That's always fun!

We sat and relaxed for a while. Everyone enjoyed their relaxed meal.

The Boardwalk is pretty in lights.

We stopped back by the Cupcake Cupboard for me to look for another "Manly Feast" bacon cupcake but they didn't have any.

We returned to our room and found this sloth (?) lounging on our bed.

We made sure to give all our snorkel gear a good rinse and laid it out across our sofa on a bed of towels.

OH! And just found this quicky Instagram video I had done earlier in the day!

And that's it! St. Thomas day is done! Not the excursion we had dreamed of but still a lot of fun. I'd recommend it just on the history lesson alone. I wish we could've done more history walking. The snorkeling was kinda a bust because of how stirred up the water was. But, you know, we're all glad we went and shared that experience together. That's what it's all about!

G'night friends! Next will be the BEST day of the WHOLE cruise! St. Maarten!!!!

Lovin your trip report, as usual! Love the dress from your boys. That is so sweet of them!

I was into the excursion until I read spiders. I can deal with anything else (like snakes) but not spiders. Nope. I think I would have run off that island screaming :arghh:!

The ship looks so beautiful. We've only cruised once before and are dying to do it again. It's nice to read your review and see your thoughts compared to a Disney ship.

Can't wait to read the rest!

I'm excited to see updates to your trip report! Your pics are so good...I feel like I am right there with you. I echo the spider comment....that would have had me back in the water with the quickness. Your unbombed selfie was adorable!

Shhhhhhhhhh....don't tell, but I'm reading this while I'm at work and the Johnny Rockets pics are making my tummy growl. I'm starving and those onion rings and floats look delicious!!!! Oh to be there now.........

Thank you!

I love my Lilly dress the boys gave me, too. I didn't think I would but the colors really do work for me surprisingly well.

Yeah, I wasn't too impressed with the spiders. They don't freak me out the way they do Tracey, tho. He will full on scream like a woman. LOL!

I really is a gorgeous ship. It's nothing like a Disney ship but it's beautiful in it's own way. I definitely appreciated the decor as well as the high standard of maintenance and cleanliness.

It was a very fascinating experience trying a different cruise line. I found the adventure of it rather appealing, actually. But that's me. I like to try new stuff and get excited over new discoveries. ;)

I'll try to get St. Maarten rolling tomorrow if I can. I'm afraid it may be Sunday before I can really get to it. I want to compose St. Maarten carefully to do that day justice. It was such an incredible experience!

Well thank you for all the kindness!

Johnny Rockets was a huuuuge hit with us! Yeah, it was an additional charge for lunch/dinner/ice cream there but to us it was money well spent every time. We'd pay it again right now if we could!

The picture you (also) instagram'd ... WOW ! very nice ! Following along :)

Thank you! I'm going to try to get the next day going as soon as I can. Life has us going in all directions right now!

My word how did this get to 7 pages?!! I'm so excited! I must catch up!

I know, right?! I'm so psyched to get to the St. Maarten day! The bestest is yet to come!!!
