Trip Report Mickey-less Lesson #1: Size doesn't matter, it's the motion of the ocean!

Yes, it's a non-Disney trip report. In a sea of Disney trip reports this is a non-Disney report. How is that pertinent on a Disney-centric fan forum, you ask? Well, this is how a solely Disney Cruise Line experienced cruising family took their first wobbly steps into non-Disney-fied cruising. Ever been curious? So were we! How the competition measures up is definitely pertinent! However, if the mods think this thread is better served in the cruise section or the other places section, I certainly understand. So sit back, relax, and slosh along with us in whatever "port" this thing sails off to.

Thread title:

Mickey-less Lesson #1: Size doesn't matter, it's the motion of the ocean! ((in my best double-rainbow dude voice)) What does it meeeaaan????? The ship we sailed is currently THE largest cruise ship on the seas: Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas. This ship is huge! How big? Let me show you. Not my picture, all credit goes to fet123 on Photobucket. Lined up here in Nassau are: Majest of the Seas, Disney Dream, Carnival Dream, the NCL Sky, and Allure's sliiiightly smaller sister ship the Oasis of the Seas. Good size comparison:

1a1f90d2.jpg

Allure of the Seas is 16 decks high, 1,187 ft long, and can carry a maximum passenger load of 6,296 serviced by roughly 2,300 crew members. In comparison, Disney's largest/newest ship in the fleet, the Fantasy is 14 decks high, 1,115.5 ft. long, and can carry a maximum passenger load of 4,000 serviced by a crew of 1,450. The Allure is a very big girl!

Among Disney's fleet my family prefers the smaller classic ships. Why? It's more laid-back, there's less people, and the overall experiences we've had were more personal and intimate if you will. We like that a lot! We knew going into this cruise that we were going to be on the biggest cruise ship afloat and that we probably would not be impressed by her size. We were right. We weren't. For us, bigger does not equate better. Size doesn't matter.

The motion of the ocean can definetly play a strong hand in your cruise experience! Leading up to our cruise I discovered (no thanks to Royal Caribbean which is my biggest aggravation with the entire experience of sailing with them) via Cruise Critic's forums that the Allure had been experiencing an issue with 1 of her 3 azipods. They had been sailing her without using the center screw for over a month before our sailing. She was safe and still functioned fine. They were just trying not to use the center pod as much as possible to avoid further/more extensive damage. So the ship sailed slower. Instead of her usual 22+ knots cruising we rarely exceeded about 16-17 knots cruising. AND, because the ship was sailing at reduced power, the captain did not utilize the stabilizers to keep the ship steady at sea. The stabilizers, like wings that extend from the sides of the ship to add stability and reduce rocking side-to-side, create drag which would slow the ship even more. So, the motion of the ocean on a ship not using her stabilizers was...well...a really FUN ride for us...not so much for those prone to sea sickness. ;)

*****Just for information sake, the Allure continues to run on 2 of her 3 pods. A cruise in February was cancelled back in mid-November to allow a week-long drydock to repair the pod. I believe it is a bering issue. It's my understanding this type of problem has been a reoccuring thing with ships that utilize the different azipods for their propulsion. To date Disney has not utilized the azipod propulsion for their ships.*****

So that nobody feels the need to ask before I get to the end and give my summation of the overall experience sailing without Mickey, I don't feel like it was better or worse than any of the 7 Disney cruises I have been on. I'm not just being nice. It's a whole different experience. I wouldn't categorize it as better or worse, it's different.

Kelly i love your bag,Did you make it or buy it?
Also do they have casinos on their boats unlike DCL?
I'm trying to remember what bag I used. LOL! If it was something I had over my shoulder that's one of my DCL Dooneys. I have the blue/grey print in the drawstring backpack style. If its my pastel cross body, that one I made. I'm thinking maybe you mean the one I carried in St. Maarten. That's definitely my pastel cross body. I LOVE that bag. I even made some little card-sized pockets inside to slip hotel room key cards in & out quickly. :)

Yep, there's a casino on the Allure. I don't think I ever went in it, tho. We aren't casino people. I'm too tight for them. If I put money into a machine or other game and money doesn't come back out I get seriously mad. Very irritating for me to gamble. I can barely stomach buying stock. LOL!

Yes it was the cross body! Just love that bag!
I will stick with DCL cruises cuz I would never see my hubby as he would be in the casino the whole time.
It's hard to keep him out of there when we have gone to Atlantis.thanks for the info Kelly hope you have a great time at DLR.we had a blast! Cindy

Such fun!

You look gorgeous in the photo with your coconut blast!

Didn't we try to get lemon drops on CC? If you can fault DCL for anything, it's their ability to deliver shots on their private island--IIRC, we asked for lemon drops and redheaded sluts and couldn't get either one (although no one needed to deliver the latter to our cabana ;) )

I did not get tired of photos of Central Park. It looks gorgeous!

I'm sure you were glad to have Riley in the car for your long drive home. That was a great trip, thanks for bringing us along!!

Thanks, Siobahn! I think the coconut blast brings out the glow. LOL!

I think we did try to get lemon drops on CC. The red headed sluts! I'll never forget the look on the cabana guy's poor face! I almost felt guilty. LOL! This is why I don't think I'd be a good cougar. I'd break the poor little victims...er...guys. LOL!

Central Park really was a neat place. It's just so interesting to have that when you're out to sea. I definitely see where a lot of people find the Oasis class ships disconnected from the sea. So many spaces onboard that feel like they're anything but at sea. You know?

Oh yes. I'm always glad to have Riley on a road trip. She rides very well. She lays in your arms and power snuggles. ;)

It was an interesting trip. I'm glad we went.

Here's a few pics while waiting for our dinner at Olive Garden. I'm not explaining the hand sign. Uncle Jerry (@obrienIII) got this started while we were in Alabama. It's a boy thing. A grown-up boy thing. So, Uncle Jerry, thanks for the influence. :hilarious:

We turned in early. Had to get ready for the real adventure to begin tomorrow!
Uncle Jerry has a sick sense of humor! ;) I'm late to the report but I'm in.

LAUGHED OUT LOUD.

I can still hear home boy asking about "Red Headed Sluts" in his accent over the walkie talkie. We (read: I) will be bringing some shots on girls cruise 2015. Jager bombs all around!!!

Whew! Just finished!

First off, sorry to hear about your uncle. Sad to say goodbye, but I love your attitude of celebrating the person!

I am 21 days away from my third RCI cruise. 7 night southern Caribbean on The Adventure. It's two classes smaller than The Allure. I think the max capacity is 3,100 ish. It was the biggest class when I first sailed it 10 years ago...

I loved seeing your non-standard excursions! Perhaps the pirate shipyard wasn't very glamorous, but it looked like a real adventure! I'm hoping to do river kayaking in St John, a rainforest hike in St. Lucia and a submarine tour in Barbados. You have me wanting to write a TR of my own! Can you tell? I'll have to check out a cruise-only forum. Any suggestions?

I like that YOU did a RCI TR, since you've done both and can offer a comparison. I've only done RCI. For me to post a report here would be like cheating on my husband and then bragging about it at his family reunion!

Anyway, great report!

We all have pretty twisted senses of humor. I just try to keep us somewhat acceptable publicly. ;)

I loved his poor little blushing cheeks. LOL!

Yeah, I hope when I pass someday people will celebrate vs. mourn. It'd be far more fitting, really.

Oooooh...I've been looking at those Southern Caribbean itineraries. You're sailing from San Juan, right? I haven't looked at flights but I'm intrigued to say the least.

I'm not a fan of cruise line excursions. I don't like being lumped into a herd. It's always the same: hurry then wait. No. I want to move around like I normally would. I don't want to be waiting for the rest of the group. I guess really it's proof positive that I just don't like people all that much. I'm friendly and I enjoy smaller groups but big groups wear on my nerves. I don't wish to waste time. Does that make sense at all???

I loved your perspective on if you did an RCI report. That made me laugh! I did this report mostly to share the fact that a Disney fan can go non-Disney and still have a good time. We definitely relaxed and did some fun stuff. I don't regret the decision to go even if financially it wasn't the best time to do it. Sometimes you just have to live while you can.

You could post a report here in the Other Destinations section. If you wanted to find a good Royal Caribbean spot to post a report/review you could try the Royal Caribbean section at the other big Dis-ney centric fan forum. ;) Also, there's the RCI section at Cruise Critic. Those are the ones I know. I will say, tho, that recently I've given thought to building my own blog spot just to park my adventures in a central location.

Thanks so much for reading!

Really enjoyed the TR. Jealous of your visit to St. Maarten, the beach where planes land is something I've wanted to do for a while now.

St. Maarten has a lot to offer. Maho Beach was just the big bucket list item we needed to do. It was such fun, tho. I've been looking at vacation home rentals near Simpson Bay. Would love to get a group together to go in and rent a nice house with it's own pool. Think it'd be a blast. Running around acting like idiots by day, cooking up killer meals chillaxin' by the pool at night. Or maybe during the day, too. ;)

I think the thing is no more 747 to St Maarten..... :) We even fly to Orlando with a 767 is my best guess :)

Just asked Tracey about the KLM 747s. He said they don't schedule them regularly like they used to. Now they only fly them in if they have the need to. There's a few other airlines that fly them in, tho.

And a great report it is! Was fun reading it and reply it from time to time :)

Thank you! It was a really fun trip. Not the best we've had but certainly not the worst. Thanks for reading along!

Ahhhh your report is awesome... I've been reading a little here and there for the past two weeks. And foolishly I decided to wait until I caught up to post my thoughts, and you know what that means... it's all a hazy blur now.

Your days in the Virgin Islands had me reliving my favorite cruise we've been on so far... the Emerald Princess. Speaking of which, I've been on RCL, NCL, Carnival and Princess and it was by far my favorite of the bunch. Definitely a classy ship. The original love boat. ;)

So glad you guys still went to Maho... such an amazing place. St. Maarten is my favorite port of call and I can't wait to go back. Your pictures of the bar and the mountain/palm trees had me really reliving our stops there.

Holy wow... those pictures of tiny tot Tracey could totally be Chandler. That's amazing!!

At first when you posted the price of the all-you-can-drink bar package, I was thinking it was way too much. But I'm totally in agreement with you on the convenience of not having to add up every single drink in your head as you order it. That kinda freedom is nice. I don't know if it would come in handy for just Brett and I ... but if we cabana girls headed off on a RCL cruise, I'm pretty sure it would be a must. ;)

You are welcome, always nice when ppl read your TR and reply/comment the posts! I will absolutely will write a TR after our trip in Octover :)

Never been on a 747 though..... just 737 or 767 and October will be 767 or a slightly chance of Dreamliner, they will be active somewhere this year with the airline we fly!

I'm also a big fan of the Coke Freestyle machines. I was made more so when I learned they were designed by Pininfarina, which is an Italian design company that I would say is most known for designing Ferrari cars. Some of the Freestyle machines even have the same Pininfarina emblem that many of the Ferraris do.

Thanks, Holly!

I'm actually ready to jump on some other cruise lines. Royal, NCL, & Princess all sail from right here in our backyard (Galveston & Houston/Bayport) at various times of year. Sailing without travel arrangements really is an incredible thing. It's so stress-free. Just put your stuff in the car & go hop on. I'm interested to try some other ports, too. Adventure is out there!

St.Maarten is incredible. My brother swears since we were in Grand Cayman last year if money were no object that's where he'd live. I say he needs to visit St.Maarten before he makes his mind up. Gorgeous beaches, great island paradise, palm trees, and mountains. The "and mountains" would be his deciding factor, I promise!

Tracey was such acute little red haired boy. As was Chandler. ;)

I'm not entirely sure we bought enough drinks to equal the amount spent on the alcohol package. I kinda doubt many people do. The bottled water prob'ly pushed us a good deal closer. We were fetching bottles of water constantly. When leaving to go ashore we carried bottles for all of us. Tracey has since mentioned he used his Sea Pass to get a few cocktails for his brother. It was largely a convenience value and we feel it was totally worthwhile. If I was sailing RCI again I'd be pretty likely to purchase the same package again.

I'm not a huge soda drinker. It's very rare for me to drink anything carbonated. When I do I have to go with sugar-free or my blood sugar will be totally messed up for a few days as my body gets over the demands for the sugar. I love the Freestyle machines because they offer cool variations for diet or zero sodas. And then there's all the non-carbonated options. They're brilliant machines for sure. I'll have to mention to my car nut son about the Ferrari bit. I bet he'd love that!

Caught up again!

I’m not tired of Central Park photos.

I was seriously, so excited for Tracey during this section. What a great day! I hate that they changed the schedule on you, but it still looked amazing.

I can’t believe the rock cut his lip!!!

Don’t apologize for the lack of toes! You got a bunch! And they’re awesome!

I absolutely love that you had Thanksgiving dinner at Johnny Rockets. Perfect.

Chandler!!! Welcome to the boards!!

You crazy ziplining kids. AND rock climbing! I love it.

I definitely learned the hard way not to sit on the front row at the adult shows. It was beyond horrifying.

That photobomb by Brian is hilarious.

Well, I loved the whole report! I enjoyed it so much! Seriously, you put in details that a lot of people would never think about, and they were perfect to compare cruise lines by. That probably didn’t make much sense… But really, I was fascinated!

I’m so glad you went and had fun!! Can't wait for final thoughts. :)

Aw, thanks Tammy. It means most when your friends enjoyed the ride with ya.

Thanksgiving Day was so us. St.Maarten + Johnny Rockets. We had actually done a traditional Thanksgiving dinner at my in-law's the week or so before the cruise. Mom said she wasn't going without Southern cornbread dressing. She makes such a killer dressing, too. Then at Christmas we all went extra bonkers frying turkeys, more dressing, jambalaya, etc etc. We never missed a thing. The laid back burgers fit us for that night, tho, and we were just as thankful to have that time together as we would've been with all the traditional fixins.

Definitely need to get those final thoughts done!

As always, thanks for reading with me. :)

Caught up on the whole thing in only...3 hours! Pretty nice read for a Sunday night so thank you Kelly! :)

It was very interesting to read about a different cruise ship. We're planned to cruise with 3 other couples who are friends of ours sometime in 2015 and I'm pretty positive we won't be on DCL so it was nice to see another ship!

I didn't tire of your pictures of Central Park! It was beautiful! Except I don't think I would like having a verandah that doesn't overlook the ocean. Might feel weird to me, how did the members of your party (I can't remember who had a verandah not overlooking the ocean sorry!) like it?

Glad you guys spent a lot of timei n Johnny Rockets! I love it there! They have some of the best burgers!

Ziplining must have been fun too! I've always wanted to do that! Props to Chandler for at least going once!!!! :)

Those planes being able to see them so close looks like A TON OF FUN! When you were describing the rush of wind after going over you reminded me of standing right up against the fence at a NASCAR race when the cars are zooming by at 180mph+ and I loved that feeling. Those planes must be massive up close!

Thanks for posting this report and letting us all see the other side of the fence (not Disney haha)! :) Have fun in Disneyland! :D
