Mermaid: MK is to DCA as Sub is to Omni

I'm skeptical about either.

Does anyone really even know about the 20K movie, or watch TLM anymore? It'd seem a stretch to bring one ride, let alone two of properties that are long gone in most people's memory.

seriously? What rock have you been living under the past few years? The Little Mermaid was the most requested Disney DVD before it was released and when it was it was one of if not the highest selling dvd of the year Not to mention the recent opening of the Broadway musical. As it stands now, the Little Mermaid is one of the most popular Disney titles in history and has more than achieved the status of a true Disney classic.

20k though, yeah that's pretty damn obscure.

Well, they could always re-make 20K. Nothing's stopped them from doing remakes of any other Disney classic in the past. (Plus, Turner Classic Movies just aired it a few weeks ago during their Disney Live-Action Feature month.)

I recently thought the same think. 20K is ripe for a remake :animwink: as is a Mysterious Island type movie. TRON is already approved which is a futuristic version of the genre IMO. Just a hunch but I think Science Fiction/Fantasy of this type could work now as the LOTR/Narnia/Potter genre cools off.

As I thought, they are remaking 20K afterall.

Absolutely true.

And you certainly don't (or at least you didn't have to in the past) have a blockbuster film in order to translate that into attractions.

Look at things from Mr. Toad to Alice in Wonderland to Matterhorn to Song of the South (albeit a bit different circumstances) for attractions that followed films that weren't huge hits and certainly aren't favorites today.

Mermaid was a blockbuster ... one that started a second Golden Age of Disney Animation. The only sad thing is that it's going to have been 20 years since the film debuted before construction begins on an attraction based upon it!

I wouldn't call 20K obscure. It's a sci-fi classic. And it has quite a following. Disney has in recent years talked about a remake too.

The sad thing is so much was lost when the subs left the MK, even if the effects were getting quite cheesy near the end. You had this glistening body of water with these great looking ride vehicles, the kewl looking volcanic rocks, the Skyway traveling above ... the kinetics were amazing and immediately said you were in one place ... now? A McDonald's playground (actually cheaper), a stroller parking area, some benches and trash cans. Magical!

Hopefully, though, Mermaid will get greenlit and soon ... and that dead zone won't be in a few years.

I can't agree more, that is one reason I cannot understand all of the anti Pixar sentiment. Think about the story lines and the characters. They are films that "children aren't embarrassed to take their parents to" as an adult you can actually forget that you are watching an animation, not because the characters look real but because the characters and the stories feel real. As much as my daughter might like Hannah Montana or HSM I can't watch them because the haracters look real but the they and the stories sure don't feel real. IMO

I strongly agree. My girlfriend watches the disney channel every once in a while, and I can't stand it. It's so predictable. It just feels like a giant waste of time. What ever happened to mass appeal.

Oh wait, pixar has taken that over.

Look at all the pixar films. The majority of the humor and story is classy and captivating.

Entertainment should be produced for adults and children. Not separately. People seem to forget that the children aren't the ones who have the ability to spend money. If you have a film that only kids want to see, the adults just might take the kids if they beg hard enough. If you make a film that the adults want to see just as bad as kids, then you have a classic/ cash cow.

I see Pixar as the next Disney. They are innovative, and they don't sell out to make a quick buck. They do what seems to be too elaborate, but was needed all along. And then, they end up making an even bigger profit than they would have made initially. As much as I like Disney world, I don't think the Disney company is producing much that should bare the Disney name.

I do like Pixar, but I don't like how they have plastered pixar all over the parks in the way they did. Pixar should be integrated into the parks, but with more... well class. The seas with nemo comes to mind. They really should have done more with the ride portion of that pavilion. It seems that once again, Disney is being stingy with their budgeting.

I wonder when or if they plan on replacing that poor excuse of a playground with an actual attraction.. Look at all the space they have to work with!!

That photo is so depressing.

Great evidence of the WalMarting of the MK.

Go from a glistening lagoon surrounded by volcanic rock and palm trees with a Skyway traveling overhead to an empty patch of grass with a McDonald's playground.

Yeah ... that's progress!

You are right about Seas with Nemo Ride. I was was so disappointed with the content of the ride. They really should have been used to educate and entertain, as is it barely entertains. My eight year old found living with the land much more interesting than Nemo, to the point where she begged to go on the behind the seeds tour. Disney should have used Nemo to inspire the same interest in the Seas, instead it is somewhat pretty to look at one time and interesting to few over the age of 5 or 6.
