Mermaid: MK is to DCA as Sub is to Omni

From Entertainment:

Word is that Ariel's Grotto is going down to make room for The Little Mermaid attraction. But we are not apparently receiving an omnimover like California. Subs might be making a return to the old 20k area. Crazy stuff.
Where did you get this? I'm sure it wasn't on one of the portals... :D

Yeah ... the subs are coming back sure ... so is Horizons, Mr. Toad and If You Had Wings (SW will sponsor now).

Gotta love this place.

As to Mermaid, everything I've heard says MK gets stripped down version of DCA's ... and I should say was getting because as of now, it isn't happening unless Bob Iger just got a visit from Walt's ghost!

Well they couldn't get rid of it at DL because the sub's show building supports the monorail, Autoipa and Rocket Rods tracks (the last if it was still running). Plus DL had more durable submarines, ones not made of fiberglass and Tony to urge some people with the help of a clown fish to bring them back.

The subs there ARE ADA accessible (thanks to a separate viewing station for guests in wheelchairs like the castle walkthrough) so those comments/excuses don't hold up. They did rip out everything that was their before and converted the subs to electric power so it almost as if they started from scratch but even still it doesn't make any sense what so ever to bring back the subs to WDW now. Back in 2004 when DL subs began their prep work yes, but not now that it is 100% dead and buried.

I still look forward to the fish woman's ominover experience though.

interesting....

well I wouldnt really mind if the Grotto gets taken out, in my oppinion its way too long of a wait to see only one character in the first place. I would much rather have a ride than a meet and greet.

No, it's well after the Renaissance. The Renaissance was approx 14th to 17th centuries. I'd place Little Mermaid solidly in the 19th century. (Though I admit I haven't watched it in quite a while...)

And as a point of reference, even though submarines of the sort weren't invented yet, 20K Leagues Under the Sea was set in the 1860s, and Jules Verne first published it in 1870.

I seem to remember an episode of TLM cartoon series with Ariel discovering a human inside a very early prototype of a submarine. Can't imagine much research was done on the cartoon series, though...

Oh c'mon. There are 50 threads stating the problems. Just comment, speculate, and enjoy.

Or are some people so jaded that they can't even imagine something good anymore?

The past decade of Disney's idotic frustrating decisions concerning the parks (excluding japan obvilously) plus the George W. Bush administration have made me extremly jaded unfortuantly. :hurl:

I have to tell everybody about the Little Mermaid Ride that was actualized on the DVD. Nobody seems to watch it. It would be great if they actually built that ride.

Yes, we do watch it

This was the DLP version (to be cloned ironically in the MK) that was never built. The new version will build and expand on this one, but with some big differences.

Supposedly the version they are building in California is far grander in scope than the Baxter's original concept (the one on the dvd).

Although I agree the DVD version looked fun and would have made for a really fun dark ride. I prefer the peter pan ride system over omnimovers.

Artistically, I agree that the Peter Pan ride system is cool. But operationally and logistically, I am thrilled they are going with the Omnimover for the Little Mermaid ride instead of something like Peter Pan.

Peter Pan ride system = 600 riders per hour and horrific lines
Omnimover ride system = 2,000+ riders per hour and short lines

Of course, when Little Mermaid opens in DCA in 2011 the thing will be mobbed as every AP from Santa Barbara to San Diego will be there those first few months. But over time the attraction will settle down and be like Haunted Mansion or Buzz Lightyear with a steady flow of people waiting 10 or 15 minutes to ride.

The Little Mermaid Omnimover will host 30,000 per day without breathing hard, while Peter Pan struggles to get 10,000 per day with a slowly moving long line.

God bless the Omimover!

IF they hadn't ripped out 20k leagues it would have been great to do a sub ride utilizing the Nemo technology and had Ariel and the gang swimming alongside the subs.

But I can't imagine them digging that back up. Plus the lines for 20k could be horrendous. Peter Pan seemed like a breeze compared to that.

But a TLM ride would be great. With the release of the third movie, re-release of the second movie and the show on broadway there's still a lot of exposure. Personally, it's my daughter's first and favorite Disney Princess.

Yea I may just avoid it for the first few months since this will be the first truely legitimate Disney ride built stateside since the Indiana Jones Adventure. Luckily, more true disney calibur stuff will be opening within the same time period (New enterance land with red car trollies, Carsland) so that will hopefully spread the crowds around.

I'm skeptical about either.

Does anyone really even know about the 20K movie, or watch TLM anymore? It'd seem a stretch to bring one ride, let alone two of properties that are long gone in most people's memory.

I'd give slightly more weight to the TLM rumor, only because the princesses are getting Disney huge returns, so adding another "princess" would make sense.

Do you have kids? My DS digs the 20K movie and Ariel is my daughter's favorite princess. I didn't use to think about it pre-kids, but remember even though it's old hat to us big people, they're seeing this stuff for the first time.

Back to the main point - I really like the sound of the Mysterious Island and the TLM rumor (regardless of the ride system). I hope one or both comes to fruition.

^^^ This raises a good point. With continual redistribution via DVD, sequels, Disney Channel, toys, games, etc. reusing the franchises over and over, new audiences are continually being fostered. Most younger viewers will latch on to something based on its quality and appeal, rather than its original release date.

Besides, aren't the timeless franchises the ones we want in the parks?
