Marvel Land at DCA. Your thoughts...

I completely see your point, but remember Disney controls the IP... they can create custom stories, situations and locales exclusively for the parks much in the way they did with Star Tours, SW Land and the new Iron Man attraction in Hong Kong.

I liked the idea of DCA's postcard entrance and mashup of California architectural styles and landmarks, but man, in retrospect the entry into the park was terrible, especially from that view. Talk about not delivering on customer expectations!

On a side note, as a San Franciscan I found Disney's representation of the Golden Gate Bridge especially cringe inducing.

It's much better now, I agree.

I know you all will think I'm crazy, but I kind of applaud Disney for trying to deliver an experience that was different. I actually think the concept would have worked if they'd spent more and stayed true to the quality of their brand. The same can be said for Tomorrowland '98, which in similar ways was an almost bigger failure.

Someday they'll have to re-theme Tomorrowland. My hope is that they'll bring back the Peoplemover in a new way. And the structure that sits on top of the Peoplemover ride queue, put the Rocket Jets back up there.

Right , but can a Marvel land really be anything but a big city? Where can they take this that wouldn't be too specific considering they want it to apply to all Marvel IPs?

EDIT: Or Maybe because this is a "mini land" they re not too worried about it and they re just going to put a couple facades of big buildings etc in front of the show building for the E ticket and call it a day.

This is the one time I wish Disneyland was east of the Mississippi.

@Pam Hates Penguins I think you should rename that other thread ... What would Disney do with DCA's Expasnion pad if Marvel wasn't an option. It's kind of interesting to think about. Just let it sit ? Maybe. Expand Hollywoodland? Probably not? Expand Bugs land? No way. Some other Pixar IP? An Incredibles E ticket would be cool.

I changed the title. It's what you said and it's a better fit. Thanks!

And I gave all title credit to you in the first post.

That's the challenge for the designers at Marvel/Disney, right? I suppose as long as the setting and experiences meet the expectations of Marvel fans and the park's California theme they'll be fine. As I said before The Hulk film took place in San Francisco, so there is at least one existing connection to the state. It isn't that hard to see how a cityscape could work in DCA, especially since the rumor is that Hollywood Tower Hotel building would be incorporated into the new land.

Where can they take this that wouldn't be too specific considering they want it to apply to all Marvel IPs?

Toontown is the defacto place where all Disney toons live. Maybe they'll build something similar for Marvel super heroes. :D

No it's not hard to see a cityscape working in DCA. I just said that it's an underwhelming concept for a land for me personally and also that I fear that it will be a generic looking city to accommodate all of the Marvel IPs

With that said... I don't get the sense that Marvel land is supposed to be some immersive land. Apparently there isn't very much room at that Expasnion pad. Marvel land at DCA is about getting a Marvel E ticket and a proper place for some meet and greets and somewhere to sell more Merch.

One way that they could do it to sorta/kinda fit it into the theme of DCA/Hollywood Pictures Backlot and appease the "Marvel has nothing to do with overall theme of DCA" crowd is to approach it like Star Tours at MGM. The idea being that it's themed like a movie production and you are walking onto the set, but then you gradually transition into the movie itself. I don't think they'll care about that, though.

Ant-Man took place in California. It's more likely they'll use that than 2003 Hulk.

So then there are at least two instances where a Marvel story took place in California. Not saying they'll use either one of those films as the foundation of anything in the new land, but it does illustrate that the storylines don't have to be set in some dark mysterious city.

Iron Man 3, as well as many comics also took place in California, I just thought Ant-Man was more likely, as Tony Starks California house was blown up, and comics are less mainstream. They are still more likely than Hulk though.

Because you said:

:)

But isn't that what's happening? I'm just going off of all the WDW/ Micechat runors. My point was just that we were all debating what a Marvel land would/ should/ could look like and then it hit me that there isn't much room back there. I think the "look" of the land is not the priority for this expansion. I think it's secondary to all of the things I mentioned above. I mean if the E ticket show/ ride building and Meet and greet area/ building are taking up the the whole land what are we really taking about. A couple of facades themed to a city?
