Have they forgotten what Hugo did in 1989?
I remember Hugo all to well I lived in Mcclellanvile (still do) we had a 17 foot storm surge and we are miles from the ocean. Shrimp boats washed up against houses. I am preparing just in case. Tuesday depending --plywood goes up on windows, move boats and cars on the west side of 17. Have plenty of gas for the generator so we will have water and won't loose anything in the frig or freezer. Most of the people in Charleston and Mt P have moved down from up north and have no idea what could happen. This scares the crap out of me. Dorian stay off shore !!!!!!!!

In theme park news, MK is very light today. Everything is pretty much walk on and within two hours, my son and I did about 6 attractions. If you are in the area and need to get some wiggles out, other than blazing humid, its not bad for wait times.

That being said, my work officially is closed on Tuesday so its still something to worry about here in Orlando. I’m pretty much won’t be letting my guard down until this thing is gone, but it was nice to forget about it for a few hours this morning in MK.

Now tied for the strongest storm ever recorded in the Atlantic basin (measurements began In 1935)

I hope it spins out to sea is of minimal impact to the US...

...and some day when it’s gone we can talk about how silly worrying about travel in the face of the raw power of nature is...
Sorry...it has to be said.
This strength of this storm is beyond belief. In a few hors to increase from sustained winds of 150 to 180 MPH is unheard of. That along with its slow pace leave me extremely worried about the Bahamas. I hope the Disney fans step up, we all spend a fortune on Disney and Universal vacations so there should be no excuse not to help those in need in the Bahamas. Also we should be ready to help those in Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas. I expect Disney to make a contribution too, especially since they own 2 Islands and have cast members directly affected.

I hate to bring real modern science into it...but the oceans are warmer than they were (no need to guess why) not too long ago and higher temperatures feed theses beasts.

The cause of the strength of the storm is a combination of water temperature and how slow it's moving. The storm is extremely scary but we were promised many category 5 storms after Katrina and they didn't happen. Political discussions belong on the politics thread and not here.We need to be concerned with those suffering from this storm and helping them recover.

However, if the current forecast proves to be correct, the effects on the Orlando area shouldn't be any worse than a summer thunderstorm.

The current forecast has a cone of probability. In that cone, the eyewall is close to Orlando. Even if just at the shore, the storm is large enough that Orlando will be under its reach. That's sustained tropical force winds.

And that's with a correct forecast. Because the cone of probability is correct if the hurricane takes just one of them. And one of those routes is hammering Orlando.

Science knows no politics...but I tend to be “practical”

Science is what it is and always has been
